deems I'm not the biggest led zeppelin fan, louis is more your man for that sort of raucous experimental uk prog-folk but fwiw this is my favourite led zep song

I do remember that in the mid-80s Dollar were the assumed to be the epitome of lightweight MOR fluff.

Not sure how true that is, Paul Morley never stopped going on about them so they were popular with the New Pop wing at the NME.

"mirror mirror" is an interesting tune.

"hand held in black and white" is pretty good too. Dollar were like Trevor Horn's pet project (before FGTH arrived)

Fixed.

Mark G, Friday, 20 March 2015 15:47 (nine years ago) link

It was Trevor Horn's work with Dollar that got him the gig with FGTH/ ZTT I think? Certainly not his stint as Jon Anderson as Yes.

Betel-chewing Equipment of East New Guinea (Tom D.), Friday, 20 March 2015 15:59 (nine years ago) link

It definitely got him the gig with ABC for The Lexicon Of Love; Martin Fry's on the record about that.

Bad move for the Sleaford Mods to hitch their wagon to such has-beens.

xpost. As far I know, Trevor Horn only produced four songs for Dollar. The ones mentioned by various people upthread of course. Those songs are lauded retroactively by eg. ILM types for being Trevor Horn productions, not because they are Dollar songs. Most of their hits were produced by others.

wiki says keith flint (the funny hair prodigy shouty guy) is alive and well and still in the band

hey now the prodigy sound like aerosmith when placed next to newton faulkner

sexpost TMIing! (wins), Monday, 23 March 2015 19:58 (nine years ago) link

there I said it

sexpost TMIing! (wins), Monday, 23 March 2015 19:58 (nine years ago) link

Dud.

Don't know who Newton Faulkner is. But both the Mods and the Prodigy sound really old-fashioned right now. Their gigs are full of dudes in their forties. Not that there's anything wrong with that. Went to a couple of Exploited gigs in the 90s that were great fun.

I had to strain pretty hard to dredge up a target that would be as laughably "who? oh right, them" as SFG tbf

is that dog latin post real, the side comment about the US having REAL rock bands made me wonder if he was trying for his own ranty over music career

mh, Monday, 23 March 2015 20:31 (nine years ago) link

I never said anything about 'real' anything.

Anyway, that Prodigy thing is really really terrible. may as well have got Keith Flint to shout 'oibeefa! Wass 'e fackin' doing?' over that sad excuse for a beat and saved Williamson the trouble.
enjoyed seeing them the other night at a packed out local show. surprised that the average age was, yes, about 45 or perhaps more. kind of expected there to be a bit of a hip, younger contingent but not really. spoke to the dad of a friend outside who was enthusing about them. then had to endure some grumpy bugger i know who hates everything go on about 'they're good but they'll never last unless they get a proper band together' which was pretty lol.

why dont u say something or like just die (dog latin), Monday, 23 March 2015 20:51 (nine years ago) link

shit the Ibiza track is no good? i guess it was never going to be as good as we heard it in our heads in advance.

yeah the Dollar thing, ABC hired him for Lexicon.. because of the Dollar singles and then TH approached FGTH by which point he was already A Big Deal.

piscesx, Monday, 23 March 2015 21:39 (nine years ago) link

ibiza thing is like the worst 90's thing ever. i was never a fan though. dirtchamber thing was the only thing i ever liked by them.

The thing I'm hearing in my head in advance is fucking terrible, I can't think of any two acts more likely to bring out the absolute worst in one another.

that is actually wins in that painting, funny story

mh, Monday, 23 March 2015 23:38 (nine years ago) link

i will never listen to it again perhaps but i actually like that prodigy song tbh, the objective terribleness somehow only enhances its gleeful mania. kind of reminds me of when the fall started doing dance stuff like why are people grudgeful

cgi bubka (NickB), Monday, 23 March 2015 23:53 (nine years ago) link

I'd say it sounds like the Revolting Cocks but that might imply it had merit.

everything, Monday, 23 March 2015 23:58 (nine years ago) link

xp it reminded me a bit of that MES & D.O.S.E. track a bit, the Fall go big beat was really a sound the world had been waiting for

Keith Moom (Neil S), Tuesday, 24 March 2015 09:18 (nine years ago) link

Reminds me of 'DARE' by Gorillaz. Indie frontman + electronica combo might be one of my least favourite genres. Never sounds quite right, and yeah like Matt DC says, more often than not it's the worst of both worlds.

why dont u say something or like just die (dog latin), Tuesday, 24 March 2015 09:29 (nine years ago) link

Plug Myself In was great fuiud

hell no I'm not going to listen back to see if 19 years of hindsight might have changed that view

pissbaby nobody in the corner (DJ Mencap), Tuesday, 24 March 2015 09:35 (nine years ago) link

by the sound of it there was little to no collaboration per se on the 'Ibiza' track, Jason just sent them some lyrics and they put it over a standard neo-Prodigy beat

it's certainly nothing special but I'd kind of rather Jason offhandedly did stuff like this rather than wave it away because the Prodigy aren't the coolest thing on the block anymore

pissbaby nobody in the corner (DJ Mencap), Tuesday, 24 March 2015 09:38 (nine years ago) link

Never sounds quite right

i think that's what i liked about it - it sounded demented

and hell no I'm not going to listen back to see if 9 hours of hindsight might have changed that view

cgi bubka (NickB), Tuesday, 24 March 2015 10:00 (nine years ago) link

At this point the Prodigy really are starting to sound like Jeremy's 'Outrageous' bedroom track from Peep Show.

― Matt DC,

agreed.
bills have to be paid.
suspect that they are beginning to learn that being outside the loop means you can do/say whatever the fuck you like, whereas now with signatures provided on various forms, life is no longer that simple.
expect lyrics re being fucked over by the music industry in 2 years.

mark e, Thursday, 26 March 2015 18:22 (nine years ago) link

i really enjoy them
they feel to me like something that's not going to last, or at least in a vital way, for a super long time
but that's ok too, not everything needs to
i mean jeez i could count some of the greatest punk bands of all time that never had more than a handful of singles and maybe an album
