Simon H OTM with both his ranking of HBO's Sunday night ennui series and also with his hatred of Togetherness

I like Looking. Probably “care” more about those characters than any in the other two shows.

In part because, when I watch Looking, I experience the characters as the characters. When I watch the other two, I too often see primarily the actors playing the characters, laboriously acting out a script, the seams of which I notice.

And I don’t think this is due to a genre difference in realism or whatever; when I watch e.g. Broad City or Sunny in Philadelphia, I also primarily experience and enjoy those characters as the characters. This is particularly a problem with Looking for me, “Sundance Jury Prize” otm.

drash, Wednesday, 4 March 2015 16:59 (nine years ago) link

edit: particularly a problem with Togetherness for me

drash, Wednesday, 4 March 2015 17:03 (nine years ago) link

not a problem for me, but maybe cuz I was totally unfamiliar with all the actors in Togetherness (apart from the Heavenly Creatures gal)

Οὖτις, Wednesday, 4 March 2015 17:09 (nine years ago) link

True, might have something to do with familiarity with the actors in Togetherness and off-screen celeb personae of the actors in Girls. But I don't think it's just that (for me).

drash, Wednesday, 4 March 2015 17:18 (nine years ago) link

Best episode of the series I think. I hope they keep Mimi-Rose around. She has the right likable/annoying balance that the others lost a long time ago, although this is the first time in ages that I've really rooted for Hannah. Ace is a fine addition to the show's long tradition of absurd, posturing douchebags.

yeah Desi, Booth Jonathon, whatever Richard E. Grant's character was named. Adam, to some extent

I had a date with a gay homosexual last night and we discussed Looking to great length; he told me to stick around and that It Gets Better in season 2. I mean I came in with a lot of v specific expectations informed by my direct exp w/ gay culture so to someone who doesn't have my partic experience I'm sure they're a lot less intolerant of the show, so like I respect other ppl liking it tbh

black sails just did a SURPRISE YOUR LEAD CHARACTER IS MOTIVATED BY HIS LOVE FOR A MAN thing that was super well handled but i'm wondering how it's playing with gay homosexuals and non gay homosexuals

Maybe in 100 years someone will say damn Dawn was dope. (forksclovetofu), Thursday, 5 March 2015 20:43 (nine years ago) link

@lenadunham
Watched Citizen Four. Incredible, essential film. Takeaway is we
should all come up with cute funny internet code names for our
friends?

lol not at all

it just started airing during a period that I was really fucking jaded and fed up w/ a lot of bullshit and was hoping this would subvert these things instead of perpetuating them but I was wrong

gybe horses (Stevie D(eux)), Thursday, 5 March 2015 21:46 (nine years ago) link

i don't think there is any nationally aired subversive gay television programming
and maybe not since pee wee's playhouse?

Maybe in 100 years someone will say damn Dawn was dope. (forksclovetofu), Thursday, 5 March 2015 21:48 (nine years ago) link

yeah idk if there is either which is why I was like "oh wow it's a show abt gay millenials, maybe this will be really critical and thought provoking!", like I feel like Girls has a lot of commentary abt its characters and its characters' generation and demographic and all of that and Looking does not

gybe horses (Stevie D(eux)), Thursday, 5 March 2015 21:54 (nine years ago) link

it's much more implicit yes.
worth noting: one of the executive producers of looking is the chief creative officer for archie comics

okay just watched 5 episodes of Looking in a row, just finished season 1, actually am kind of liking it

gybe horses (Stevie D(eux)), Friday, 6 March 2015 05:45 (nine years ago) link

now you're gonna make me go back to season 1
when you get to the funeral episode in season 2, let's see if you're with me

halfway through the most recent episode, mimi rose seems similar to the main characters just better at it

Treeship, Monday, 9 March 2015 02:13 (nine years ago) link

this ep was prob the best of the season imo, tho if someone critiques dad tad's coming out as gimmicky id not disagree

johnny crunch, Monday, 9 March 2015 02:41 (nine years ago) link

if we're still talking about togetherness, i just watched episode 4. the sex scene is so sad.

Treeship, Monday, 9 March 2015 03:17 (nine years ago) link

ok shosh still killing it.

schwantz, Monday, 9 March 2015 04:45 (nine years ago) link

there are scenes in togetherness that are underplayed but just. devastating. the sex scene is one.

Holy shiiieeeeeet what a great episode!

thought this was a really great episode. best of the season easily. just when i was starting to feel a little bit fed-up with girls too.

Rave Van Donk (jim in glasgow), Tuesday, 10 March 2015 02:28 (nine years ago) link

Shosh is like the only one resembling a sympathetic human being at this point. Idk why i'm still watching this tbh, it's so scattershot. Dad coming out was ridiculously contrived altho it was nice to see sy ableman again.

Elijah said Hannah's dad was gay back in Season 1

difficult-difficult lemon-difficult (VegemiteGrrl), Tuesday, 10 March 2015 03:21 (nine years ago) link

wasn't there foreshadowing of the dad coming out in the episode where he visited hannah in iowa?

This was like a season's worth of jokes in one episode. It was a quickfire sitcom spliced with a Woody Allen sex farce. Favourite bit was when Hannah gives the bemused teacher her theory about why he's scared to date her. "It's the new misogyny… and I'm up for that!" Also, Shosh's misfiring dirty talk.

Minaj moron (Re-Make/Re-Model), Tuesday, 10 March 2015 09:38 (nine years ago) link

could NOT watch the frenulum piercing scene and it really aggravated me tbh. right up there with the dentist and chopping up the body scenes in the american for WOAH I CANNOT WATCH THISness. also as this seems to be where we are discussing it, last episode of togetherness was just amazing/painful.

i thought the last episode of togetherness was the worst one of the run.

girls, on the other hand, was excellent, one of the best episodes of the series. the piercing looked real; was it?

akm, Tuesday, 10 March 2015 13:44 (nine years ago) link

i thought the last episode of togetherness was the worst one of the run.

yeah so did I - the whole will they/won't they with the charter school guy, c'mon we all knew they were going to

Οὖτις, Tuesday, 10 March 2015 15:50 (nine years ago) link

i don't think it was 'will they' as much as 'when will they'

Also, Shosh's misfiring dirty talk.

"slimy vagina" was v lol

hannah's lack of professional boundaries as a high school teacher, while predictable, is really angering me in a way nothing lena dunham has ever done has.

agreed tbh. Was sure she would get sacked for the frenulum thing.

starting with the abortion episode, this has kind of gotten good? (would still be better without Hannah and her parents)

End of the Adam-Mimi Rose relationship was so dumb. I mean, typical for what this show is doing now, but nearly no explanation given. It's so hard to care about characters in a show as random as this though. Now I think I mostly watch for lulz, and schadenfreude at seeing Hannah and Marnie repeatedly sabotage their own lives.
