Does "The Rainbow/Eden/Desire" by Talk Talk count?

True enough, and I knew there were going to be weird cases that are going to come down to some kind of judgment call. xp

Does "The Rainbow/Eden/Desire" by Talk Talk count?

last question: can I nominate the entirety of Fuck Buttons' Street Horrrsing under the Boris Flood provision? because all of the track divisions are seamless, & I think of the whole album as of a single piece...

I'm not sure about these... with Flood, the track names are all eponymous with sequential part numbers. Street Horrrsing, seamless as it is, has different track names (and I don't think of it as a single composition, I always single out "Sweet Love for Planet Earth"). If it's any consolation, I'm probably going to nominate "Surf Solar."

I'm not familiar enough with the Talk Talk to determine whether or not it's a single composition.

I'm inclined to say that, if a continuous composition is split into multiple tracks, then it should share a title in some way to qualify -- otherwise, we'd have too many songs that merely segue into each other getting nominated (e.g. "Airbag" into "Paranoid Android").

I thought of it more as ambient, but I'm never sure where the lines between classical/20th-century/ambient exist.

The original album version of "Marquee Moon" runs 9:11...don't hate me.

I would have included it otherwise. I used my Mp3tag directory to make up my list--you can arrange everything you have by song length. (Assume you can do that with an iPod, too.)

QUESTIONS
1) Do live versions count as separate noms if they are formally released and also notably different from the original?

2) If something is technically a medley but contained/released within one track, is that acceptable?

groundless round (La Lechera), Sunday, 1 March 2015 14:37 (nine years ago) link

Check that--my mp3 of "Marquee Moon" runs 9:11, but Wikipedia has it at 9:58, and so does my vinyl LP. Either my mp3 is abridged (by a lot), or the LP time has been incorrect all along. Technically, it falls short either way.

Does the 'no classical' rule rule out Robert Ashley and Alvin Lucier? Where does classical end?

Personally I'd say that "classical" is a piece of music with a score that could, theoretically, be played on "standard" instrumentation. So Arvo Part = classical, Alvin Lucier's I Am Sitting In A Room doesn't.
In C, I'm not sure about.

Gah, couldn't really take part in the noms process as I was too busy to make a trawl through my records (and I have a terrible memory), so hopefully you all will have done a good job at this. The only things I can think of I might have added before the deadline were a Cromagnon song I probably wouldn't even vote for and more Cecil Taylor + Sun Ra. But I bet I've forgotten something incredibly important.

emil.y, Sunday, 15 March 2015 13:00 (nine years ago) link

i will forever be indebted to this thread for introducing me to the 10+ minute "disco" version of Here Come the Night by the Beach Boys, which is so wonderfully awful, it might be the greatest thing ever.

charlie h, Sunday, 15 March 2015 14:38 (nine years ago) link

That was my nomination. It is funny reading about the history of that disco version. The way I remember it, they released a shorter version first, most fans hated it, then they put an extended version on the album. It was regarded as an example of them trying to be hip a couple years after a trend was at its hottest.

Robert Adam Gilmour, Sunday, 15 March 2015 15:07 (nine years ago) link

The original was a couple of albums old when the disco remix happened

Mark G, Sunday, 15 March 2015 19:36 (nine years ago) link

There's as many as 4 disco versions, Light Album version is the longest. I didn't mean to say the fans hated the Wild Honey version, but the earlier disco versions and the later ones were longer.

Robert Adam Gilmour, Sunday, 15 March 2015 20:28 (nine years ago) link

Valet, "Blood Is Clean" ("North," another track on the album Blood Is Clean, is 13:07, but the title track is 4:59)

i am a little late responding to this but apparently the mp3 i have covers both songs, so i'd suggest to take "north" instead of the title track if that is not too late now.

it's the distortion, stupid! (alex in mainhattan), Tuesday, 24 March 2015 20:55 (nine years ago) link
