this is how we do it into milkshake out of milkshake

pandemic, Saturday, 28 February 2015 09:08 (nine years ago) link

and then into selecta 2015!

big juicy moves like that with the geelong handbag jamz with the new edm crossover all together go to show that friday night radio is the most perfect laboratory for q right now

like go back to the stuff i was wondering about a few months ago wrt how bridgeable the gap was between the crowdpleasing retro & fireworks ez-style live sets and the dense underground tunnelling mos sets and it's like you could not have orchestrated this situation any better to interrogate that

not to say that there are brand new elements being introduced or really a change in approach at all, it's just a subtle reformulation, ratios weighted appropriate to context.... would be pushing it (and is illogical anyway...) but you could almost make the case that this show is the essential bassline to essential garage before it? like that's the sensibility most at play setting it apart imo

Been sitting here playing FM, wondering whether to bother watching the Villa game, whilst also having a nagging thought at the back of my mind that I was forgetting to do something that I usually do on a Saturday afternoon...then saw this thread bumped

THX r|t|c !!!

wait, what's the tune he plays after 'don't call me baby' that has "TAKE ME AWAAAY" in the chorus??

pandemic, Saturday, 7 March 2015 13:01 (nine years ago) link

that's the new one from the excellent dj skt, with whom you can't go wrong. v much an aesthetic soulmate of q's imo!

really nice to have the new wideboys tune ('move & groove') crop up too, they are definitely a huge evolutionary link in the friday nite geelong evolution

love the way all the refixes being credited to the new producer rather than the original artists means glorious surprises at every turn

lex pretend, Monday, 9 March 2015 18:15 (nine years ago) link

at this point i feel fairly confident he could do an entire two hours with the gold teeth acapella running over it

Why won't this flipping Kiss Fresh player work??!! Don't fail me now and leave me to suffer Michael Owen.

Got to say I'm loving the higher concentration of handbag anthems in this (cf the continual reappearance of Madison Avenue) but he manages to do that without sacrificing boshier beat-em-up moments, often spinning from one to another.

I'm a couple of weeks behind and only just listening to the 27/02 set while playing Mario Kart and truly there is no higher state of man.

Matt DC, Saturday, 14 March 2015 12:03 (nine years ago) link

His use of Preditah's Selecta remains A+++ btw.

Just got a blast of unexpected Get Get Down and I can enthusiastically endorse this bit.

Matt DC, Saturday, 14 March 2015 12:32 (nine years ago) link

heh that bootleg is actually the only one where the producer (zed bias iirc) isnt credited though /pedant

yeah, also the strand of abstract/indie moodpieces he uses for builder/breathers

as pandemic mentions there's a really nice section in yday's one where he plays with them together, so

James Blake - Limit To Your Love bass remix
Four Tet - Back To The Start
Grey Worm - The Greatest (MK Dub)
Escape - Just Escape (Justin Martin Remix)

and then the todd remix of faylene brown, reprising the tropical 2 trick of using classicism as bucolic relief

r|t|c, Saturday, 14 March 2015 14:39 (nine years ago) link

Speaking of Todd can we talk about how his dub mix of Etienne De Crecy's "You" will maybe be tune of the year once it is released?

Tim F, Sunday, 15 March 2015 08:14 (nine years ago) link

And then we can talk about the other Todd and his remix of Hercules & Love Affair.

DJ Q keeping me up with all my favourites Todds.

Tim F, Sunday, 15 March 2015 08:14 (nine years ago) link

Srsly though when it's on I can't think of a better variant of music than Q's current brand of handlebar hooligan handbag house.

Debut record from Royal-T, DJ Q and Flava D

Matt DC, Wednesday, 22 April 2015 22:26 (eight years ago) link

the flava d album is pretty good in a "garage refixes of r&b hits" way - her beats are great but she leans a bit too heavily on the samples maybe, but it all comes out as very enjoyable anyway

Apologies in advance that my contribution to this thread is generally me asking who does such and such and rtc answering.

But who does the "pretty green eyes" track or remix that he's played the last couple of weeks?

pandemic, Monday, 4 May 2015 12:51 (eight years ago) link

hard to pick moments out from the consistent orgiastic abundance (bit frustrating too not to be able to chinwag about it in weekly realtime) but i am particularly waiting for 17/4 to arrive so i can publicly induct it into the official ineffable canon

the endless ongoing source of reward with these is how incoming new points in the q constellation provoke subtle recalibration and counterbalance, their gravities sucking in the known stars around them closer, rippling their vibes out thru the rest of the set, all of it happening on the thrilling fly

so first hour of 17/4 introductory feeler grooves (quite perfect in retrospect of course) find focus in the piano vamp of the new t williams/mj cole collabo 'privilege', and when that is then beautifully paired with the toyboy & robin mix of gotsome & wiley 'vibe out' (typical sinuous technoid balearic from THA GODS) it slowly and surely forms into a mighty tsunami of bonhomic housey freakadelic vivacity like so

T Williams & MJ Cole - Privilege
Gotsome ft Wiley - Vibe Out (Toyboy & Robin Remix)
CamelPhat ft A*M*E - Paradigm (Amtrac's Temptation Mix)*
Tough Love & Roger Sanchez ft Nastaly - In The Name Of Love
Ryan Blyth & After 6 Ft Luther Soul - Special
Caroline Koch - Timeless (Tchami Remix)
Slave - Heads
Croatia Squad - Touch Me (Return Of The Jaded Remix)
Scales ft Zack Knight - Green Eyes

(*how fucking especially good is this!! put those old records away and remember why i keep u on retainer tim!! SALVATION IN LOVE! https://soundcloud.com/axtonemusic/camelphat-ft-ame-paradigm-amtracs-temptation-mix)

u may already have noticed similar but totally different science in extant set soundclouds where the returning raw bleep bromance with dj haus opens a portal to let in sly creatures of the nite like alex arnout, flashmob, even cajmere 'lets dance' melded into lorenzo

r|t|c, Monday, 4 May 2015 13:52 (eight years ago) link

in fact that first hour of 17/4 is so irresistible that it seems to make the second unrelatedly vibed ruffer hour that much more viciously sharp and on point - there's this one great memorable bit where he actually just fully takes down this new heartfelt singalong anthem i havent been able to id yet ("don't close your eyes... we've still got a little way to go... keep it alive... hold a little tighter don't let it go") mid-chorus to drolly drop "this is how it went down in the 95" (nyta, u know the one) before exploding them back together in sync

anyway erm have fun when u hear it eh!

lol but yes this is amazing, though I expect I'll like it even more in the midst of the maelstrom you describe.

Tim F, Tuesday, 5 May 2015 18:04 (eight years ago) link

Even though the Tchami tune is just a (superior) sequel to "Promesses", something about the compressed shivery stutter of the riff feels deliberately designed for DJ Q in a post-"Ghosts" sense. Like you could imagine Tchami composing the riff and calling Q from France and Q would be all "yasssss bitch I have an opening for this in exactly fifteen minutes send it over now."

Tim F, Tuesday, 5 May 2015 18:11 (eight years ago) link

i'm several weeks behind on q sets but the last little few individual tracks have turned my head inside out
