as far as i can tell the jeff rosenstock album completely rules

I'd never heard of Sun Hotel before, but these are good. Early Bright Eyes meets a less raucous (and ambitious) Titus Andronicus. Will be checking out the album.

only on the first listen and i'm not sure of its staying power but so far this makeshift shelters record is a total blast, total anniversary/forecast vibes https://makeshiftshelters.bandcamp.com/album/something-so-personal

3 songs into the Makeshift Shelters and liking it. Two finds here in one week--thanks, thread!

Listened to it once; it's solid, but I do wish it rocked a bit more.

I wanna be enthusiastic about that Makeshift Shelters effort, but eh, its just mostly ok for me on first listening. Lyrics are kinda entertaining though--that song about the punker than thou guy

Hah I actually love the Makeshift Shelters on first listen - everything about their aesthetic, including their name, is very early 00's to me

, Friday, 3 April 2015 14:24 (nine years ago) link

This is probably an unfair comparison but I thought about this song for the first time in literally 10 years after listening to Makeshift Shelters today

(Also it's crazy to me that this song has 100k+ viewS)

This is a quick, quarterly reminder that all available tracks mentioned on this thread are being posted as updated to a thread-specific Spotify playlist that I'm maintaining. I just did a quick sweep prior to posting this message and updated as of today with everything that's been added on Spotify since it was first mentioned.

That playlist is currently a bit less than an hour of music and is clickable below. Give it a spin and subscribe if you want to listen along through the year.

maybe too straight-up "punk" for the thread but thanks to prompting by the Propagandhi twitter account, I discovered this very rousing and catchy 2014 album by The Rebel Spell, whose singer passed recently in a hiking accident:

I'll third that Jeff Rosenstock album. It's a little all over the place to me but in a good fun way.

Fatalist AmandaPalmistry (irrational), Wednesday, 8 April 2015 20:29 (nine years ago) link

the new turnover songs sound... pretty good!

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=z7bOAE_s8UI

oh incidentally there's a new mewithoutyou album in june and the new song is the best thing they've put out in years https://soundcloud.com/runforcoverrecords/mewithoutyou-red-cow

and that turnover record is pretty good! a little samey but very suited toward the weather right now

two weeks pass...

I would like to belatedly also join the Jeff Rosenstock praise chorus, especially as the sun's out which makes it sound even better.

fuck me, archipelago (Simon H.), Thursday, 14 May 2015 23:09 (eight years ago) link

Can we talk about Marietta here? Cuz new album is great. Like Piebald meets Cap'n Jazz.

Fatalist AmandaPalmistry (irrational), Sunday, 17 May 2015 23:14 (eight years ago) link

well that sounds right up my alley

Sorry. The I was listeing to the old record. the few tracks I heard sounded like that. The new record less so.

Fatalist AmandaPalmistry (irrational), Monday, 18 May 2015 01:25 (eight years ago) link

My friend sent me a link. New album is more lo-fi, like california fuzz stuff. Less cool

Fatalist AmandaPalmistry (irrational), Monday, 18 May 2015 01:26 (eight years ago) link

ugh why is everyone trying to be less cool

oh hey there's a new Envy album http://shop.temporaryresidence.com/trr259

fuck me, archipelago (Simon H.), Tuesday, 19 May 2015 01:31 (eight years ago) link

holy SHIT the two tracks they have streaming sound amazing

it took a bit to grow on me, but of late i can't stop listening to the new brand new song "mene"

slothroprhymes, Tuesday, 19 May 2015 16:35 (eight years ago) link

That one Jeff Rosenstock song always makes me want to listen to Disco 2000 :(

, Friday, 22 May 2015 13:01 (eight years ago) link

Is this where we would talk about the latest Good Riddence and Strung Out albums too? Because while hardly reinventing the wheel both are surprisingly return to form. The GR in particular is pretty great.

Fatalist AmandaPalmistry (irrational), Friday, 22 May 2015 14:59 (eight years ago) link

Menzingers/Chumped a perfectly calibrated concert pairing. humped's vocal disclaimer about respecting space and boundaries while having fun carried over to make for a friendly, just-raucous-enough Menzingers crowd full of hand-on-heart singalong bros (and more than a few ecstatic fangirls)

Also I hope this is a safe space to say that I may be in love with the lead singer/guitarist from Chumped

fuck me, archipelago (Simon H.), Thursday, 4 June 2015 04:21 (eight years ago) link

anika's a completely kickass person so i don't blame you tbh

ok phew

anyway the real lesson here is that I need to go to more emo-y shows, there's a Fireworks one coming up but iirc they're caught up in that horrible scene shit so no thx

fuck me, archipelago (Simon H.), Thursday, 4 June 2015 04:52 (eight years ago) link

ahhh nvm I was thinking of The Wonder Years. disregard!

fuck me, archipelago (Simon H.), Thursday, 4 June 2015 04:58 (eight years ago) link

fireworks are going on hiatus soon, see them imo

makeshift shelters broke up! damn

really enjoying the new Desaparecidos album. "Golden Parachutes" and "Te Amo Camila Vallejo" are jams, Oberst should stick to this gear imo

seeing rvivr tonight, excited af

oh yeah the desaparecidos record ruuuules

This is a quick, mid-year reminder that all available tracks mentioned on this thread (and a handful of album selections from each listed) are being posted as updated to the thread-specific Spotify playlist. wow thanks forks! lol i should post in this thread more often

the new refused record is okay!

yeah I'm giving it a spin now and it's amusingly slick

the naive cockney chorus (Simon H.), Tuesday, 30 June 2015 19:19 (eight years ago) link

mind you the last Loma Prieta record was very "Converge meets emo" and didn't work for me at all so we'll see

the naive cockney chorus (Simon H.), Friday, 11 December 2015 01:43 (eight years ago) link

this also has a lot of post-rocky parts but i'm generally unbothered bc the parts that cook really fucking cook

HYPERLINK TO RAP GENIUS (BradNelson), Friday, 11 December 2015 01:48 (eight years ago) link

goddamn this rules

the naive cockney chorus (Simon H.), Friday, 11 December 2015 01:56 (eight years ago) link

might be my imagination but I feel like it has some of the ingenuity of the Cloud Rat album

the naive cockney chorus (Simon H.), Friday, 11 December 2015 01:57 (eight years ago) link

hell yeah it does!

HYPERLINK TO RAP GENIUS (BradNelson), Friday, 11 December 2015 01:58 (eight years ago) link

I listened to this earlier at my emo-loving gf's insistence and yeah it's something for everyone

of course it is possible that I might myself like (some) emo, but let's do this one at a time please

finally the band that brings everyone together

HYPERLINK TO RAP GENIUS (BradNelson), Friday, 11 December 2015 03:58 (eight years ago) link

man, remember that makeshift shelters record from earlier this year? that thing was really good

HYPERLINK TO RAP GENIUS (BradNelson), Wednesday, 16 December 2015 21:48 (eight years ago) link

ahevtn kept up with this like I wanted to this year, you have a best of list for this stuff, Brad? Or anyone else.

Spottie, Wednesday, 16 December 2015 21:51 (eight years ago) link

*I haven't

Spottie, Wednesday, 16 December 2015 21:51 (eight years ago) link

most of the records i was looking forward to in this genre ended up disappointing me but lemme see if i can scrape together a top whatever

mewithoutyou: pale horses
the front bottoms: back on top
rolo tomassi: grievances
fightstar: behind the devil's back
petal: shame
julien baker: sprained ankle
foxing: dealer
the world is a beautiful place: harmlessness
annabel: having it all
fall out boy: american beauty/american psycho
laura stevenson: cocksure
beach slang: the things we do to find people who feel like us
makeshift shelters: something so personal
allison weiss: new love
better off: milk

HYPERLINK TO RAP GENIUS (BradNelson), Wednesday, 16 December 2015 21:58 (eight years ago) link

huh the better off record is definitely better than being last on that list, no idea why i ordered it like that

HYPERLINK TO RAP GENIUS (BradNelson), Wednesday, 16 December 2015 21:58 (eight years ago) link

considered putting the wonder years record on that list but it really is half garbage to me at this point

HYPERLINK TO RAP GENIUS (BradNelson), Wednesday, 16 December 2015 22:00 (eight years ago) link

i rate the beach slang, fall out boy + allison weiss. the fob is really a fantastic record and imo only suffers bc they've put out such high quality content as of late that it seems unremarkable. also like

not on tour - bad habits
title fight - hyperview
colleen green - i want to grow up
neck deep - life's not out to get you
teenage bottlerocket - tales from wyoming

Mordy, Wednesday, 16 December 2015 22:17 (eight years ago) link

thanks, friends! Gonna drop these in a playlist and check em out.

Spottie, Wednesday, 16 December 2015 22:18 (eight years ago) link

love that Title Fight album

anonanon, Wednesday, 16 December 2015 22:29 (eight years ago) link

I enjoyed the Spraynard and Red City Radio records but YMMV

husked, tonal wails (irrational), Wednesday, 16 December 2015 22:57 (eight years ago) link

oh yeah I meant to revisit the spraynard record. they're getting better all the time

HYPERLINK TO RAP GENIUS (BradNelson), Wednesday, 16 December 2015 23:04 (eight years ago) link

Does FIDLAR fit into this categorization? Their new one and the Beach Slang are by my fave punky things from this year.

Fetty Wap Is Strong In Here (cryptosicko), Thursday, 17 December 2015 02:08 (eight years ago) link

the Wonder Years album held up p well for me, esp w/ my slightly edited playlist.

the naive cockney chorus (Simon H.), Thursday, 17 December 2015 03:29 (eight years ago) link

and despite my best efforts I was v bored with the TWIABPAIANLATD album. I would add that about half of the Turnover album was stellar. there was a killer EP in there.

the naive cockney chorus (Simon H.), Thursday, 17 December 2015 03:34 (eight years ago) link

Still can't believe that the FOB came out this year; seems years old by now. Some regional stuff - self-titleds from Carb On Carb (Flying Nun-ish indie group that've slowly transitioned into 90s emo/pop-punk; kinda Rainer Maria-ish ... half of the band is from Auckland's greatest group never to record a full-length album, Moron Says What) and Chinese Football (from 成都, v.much in a twinkle/American Football style).

etc, Thursday, 17 December 2015 03:50 (eight years ago) link

two weeks pass...

I'm wrapping this playlist for the year. It has been updated with a few new adds (The Max Levine Ensemble, Title Fight, Chumped, Colleen Green) and includes every track mentioned on thread that is available via Spotify's US catalogue as of EOY 2015. If I missed something or if a track comes available sometime in the future, bump here to let me know and I'll add.
