This is solid. Sometimes is a little too Kyuss (which, as I've talked about before, is not my thing) and the dude isn't the strongest singer, but the overall vibe is great.

UFOMAMMUT Finally Tours North America!
http://fastnbulbous.com/ufomammut-finally-tours-north-america/

Kicks off just down the street from me at Reggie's!

Fastnbulbous, Wednesday, 18 February 2015 18:37 (nine years ago) link

i will see you there!! tickets go on sale friday and it's on my calendar. i'm kinda pissed that i'm going to miss electric wizard but it's on one of my school nights and also UFOMAMMUT makes up for it.

Dangit, Graveyard are touring with Mastodon and Clutch but for some reason aren't going to Chicago. They are playing Milwaukee on 5/13, the same night as Ufomammut!

Fastnbulbous, Friday, 20 February 2015 18:47 (nine years ago) link

yep - totally going to hit that triple bill in Milwaukee instead - you've talked up Graveyard live for so long, now I have to see 'em!

BlackIronPrison, Friday, 20 February 2015 19:32 (nine years ago) link

You know, I may try to make them both. The show at The Rave starts at 7-ish, and Graveyard opens. Reggies' doors open at 7 too, and only Usnea is scheduled to open so far. But as long as they pack in another band or two last minute like they usually do, it should be feasible to make it in time for Ufomammut later in the evening! I've seen Mastodon and Clutch plenty of times, so not an issue for me. That will definitely be a tip-top night for rock 'n' cosmic doom!

Fastnbulbous, Friday, 20 February 2015 19:50 (nine years ago) link

I'd be really impressed if you pulled that off and were able to catch both sets.

I don't wanna risk missing Ufomammut (or a $300 Wisconsin speeding ticket!), so only if they announce more opening bands at Reggie's.

the saer returns (Drugs A. Money), Sunday, 22 February 2015 07:04 (nine years ago) link

Picked up the Nudity record at their tour kick-off. Very impressive! I get a sort of Hawkwind at their Krautiest vibe with a lot of NWOBHM flourishes.

Tomás Piñon (Ryan), Monday, 23 February 2015 00:50 (nine years ago) link

Ok, I have had Bardo Pond's "Dilate" for quite a few years, have given it quite a few listens and like it quite well.

What would be a best second album by Bardo Pond?

earlnash, Monday, 23 February 2015 01:41 (nine years ago) link

Hmm... Lapsed, Amanita or On The Ellipse would be my recommendations. Set and Setting never grabbed me for some reason.

rabatment of the rectangle (GOTT PUNCH II HAWKWINDZ), Tuesday, 24 February 2015 00:16 (nine years ago) link

Nothing else they've done is really like Dilate, so it's best to prepare yourself for something different but still awesome.

EZ Snappin, Tuesday, 24 February 2015 21:40 (nine years ago) link

i'm not hearing the middle eastern influences as much on this album but previous albums have had more (and they talk a lot about trying to incorporate middle eastern sounds into their death metal)

Listened to most of the ST 37 album today, called I'm Not Good and can only be found on Spotify under "ST-37" (dash included). I guess it was released late last year, and contrary to the title it's very good, so much so that I can see putting it on my top 10 of my ILX ballot, had I heard it in time. It's actually a lot like Glare, their masterpiece from 1995, 20 years ago!, but the mix is more in your face, with guitars, and eespecially vocals briught up to intelligible levels. Sonically it's a heady stew of dense spacerock guitars in a terminal state of Echoplex, surreal dissociative lyrics ("Doppleganger" mumbles on for multiple verses about bringing the silverware home), movie dialogue from (I think?) the 50s, backwards tape loops, a couple of deconstructed covers (including a ten-minute version of Edwyn Collins' A Girl Like You), all manners of discombobulating electronic effects and acid-fried weirdness. I suck at Spotify links but you can def find it there (remember the dash: ST-37), and I would recommend checking it out p much as soon as possible.

Excited to see them on Saturday

EZ Snappin, Tuesday, 10 March 2015 01:40 (nine years ago) link

The lineup for that show is Elder, MOS Generator, Blood of the Sun, Wo Fat, & Duell. I will hear ALL THE RIFFS.

EZ Snappin, Tuesday, 10 March 2015 02:01 (nine years ago) link

What I enjoy about the album (and Elder Spires before it) is that it's not JUST riffs, but huge, open-string melodies too (like on the title track as the verse comes in around 1:30), that are just decipherable in the crunch.

calstars, Tuesday, 10 March 2015 03:21 (nine years ago) link

...and the rhythm the drummer has, which is unhurried and free of filler (though I do remember a couple of triplets somewhere on the new album). But case in point is when the drums come in at the beginning of "Release"...just perfect, letting the guitar work breathe in space.

calstars, Tuesday, 10 March 2015 03:24 (nine years ago) link

EZ, I'm super jealous of that line-up!

groundless round (La Lechera), Tuesday, 10 March 2015 14:23 (nine years ago) link

The Elder album loses me with that super long track in the middle. Just feels like a chore to get through. The rest is very good but that track ruins it IMO.

Dinsdale, Tuesday, 10 March 2015 14:31 (nine years ago) link

new Kult of the Wizard is out today:

https://kultofthewizard.bandcamp.com/album/the-white-wizard

They've morphed from Electric Wizard worship into more of a Witch Mountain-y vibe with the addition of a female vocalist. Even bust out a Heart cover. And, in the interest of full disclosure, they used some of my noise theremin squawking as the soundbed for "Plasma Pool". They've done a "noise track" on each of their prior two albums and they reached out to me this time around to help with that song.

EZ Snappin, Friday, 13 March 2015 15:23 (nine years ago) link

Listening to this now and totally diggin' it - hope they come to Chicago.

BlackIronPrison, Friday, 13 March 2015 15:28 (nine years ago) link

They're hoping to get some shows booked in the near future. The lineup seems pretty solid now. I would guess that if they start playing outside Minneapolis they'll head your way.

http://helzgloriam.misantrof.net -- full album free

HELZGLORIAM is pure evil hailing from Persia: the group is ruled by the dark magic of passion and is inspired by the memories of ancient Satanic cults in The East. Is inspired by what the great Persian Empire meant. This is the beginning before any end. This is pure and unique energy created by musicians accepting SATAN as their creator and strongly intending to promote the mysteries of chaos in reality.

HELZGLORIAM is sublime symphonic black metal with extreme power, groove and energy. It sounds heavier and darker than most modern Scandinavian music of the same genre nowadays. “Infernal Monarchy” is purely dark lord worshipping.

This is what you were waiting for. This is what you needed. This is your beginning. This is your end.

….And death is whispering in the desert winds and SATAN is rising with the sandstorms...

they've got a great sound and loads of middle east folk influences (opening track has maqam stylings, chanting)

Mordy, Tuesday, 17 March 2015 15:35 (nine years ago) link

Shame about the stupid name, since this Black Pussy record is actually really good.

Yeah, they released another statement after a show was canceled that was more braindead doubling down on the name.

Wand's "Golem" album's sounding pretty good, almost scratches the itch I have for Tame Impala and Uncle Acid to collaborate.

^^^ NOT METAL (GOTT PUNCH II HAWKWINDZ), Monday, 6 April 2015 23:13 (nine years ago) link

Yeah, I can second that WAND album, it's a lot of fun. It falls more closely to garage rock than stoner rock, but you can definitely feel the influence of the latter.

ƋППṍӮɨ∏ğڵșěᶉᶇдM℮ (jon /via/ chi 2.0), Monday, 6 April 2015 23:23 (nine years ago) link

So here's a very preliminary list of my favorite records of this type from the first quarter of 2015:

Elder - Lore
Eternal Tapestry - Wild Strawberries
WAND - Golem
Moon Duo - Shadow of the Sun
Saturnalia Temple - To The Other
Crypt Sermon - Out of the Garden
Mondo Drag - Mondo Drag
Corsair - One Eyed Horse
Awful Band Name Here - Magic Mustache
The Silence - The Silence
Black Rainbow - Hawkdope
Kult of the Wizard - The White Wizard
Shepherd - Stereolithic Riffalocalypse
Bose - Ultimate Temple of Doom
Pond - Man, It Feels Like Space Again
Sorcerer - In the Shadow of the Inverted Cross
Ruby the Hatchet - Valley of the Snake
Disappears - Irreal
Torche - Restarter
Cherry Choke - Raising the Waters
Captain Crimson - Ageless Time
The Midnight Ghost Train - Cold Was the Ground
Brothers of the Sonic Cloth - Brothers of the Sonic Cloth
Dopethrone - Hochelaga
Spidergawrd - II
Killer Boogie - Detroit
Omega Soul - Void
Stonebringer - Those Winds
Chiefs - Tomorrow's Over
Stoned Jesus - The Harvest
Fakir Thongs - Habanero

I know, I know, stretching the categories here (I know we dropped doom from the title), but this is how I wanted to list 'em.

Kult of the Wizard! Woohoo!

EZ Snappin, Tuesday, 7 April 2015 14:59 (nine years ago) link

Yeah, I somehow missed out on the first couple EPs, but I really like that new one. I'm anxious to hear what a full length will sound like though.

ƋППṍӮɨ∏ğڵșěᶉᶇдM℮ (jon /via/ chi 2.0), Tuesday, 7 April 2015 15:00 (nine years ago) link

I think this lineup will be steadier than prior ones so the potential is high for a full length. They're also looking into playing their first shows in the next few months. Alas, I won't be able to play "Plasma Pool" with them.
