ew Meghan Trainor wrote it though

The Fifth Harmony record is uneven, but it's got a couple great tracks on it. Namely Reflection and We Know. The Mariah-sampling track is a valiant effort, but I don't think I like it.

Greer, Monday, 2 February 2015 19:32 (nine years ago) link

xp you shouldn't have told me! now i can't like it :X

dyl, Monday, 2 February 2015 20:18 (nine years ago) link

3 songs co-written by meghan trainor, the rest reminds me yours truly

real hip hop for j dilla fans (o_sailor), Monday, 2 February 2015 23:07 (nine years ago) link

Not really seeing the Yours Truly comparison aside from Everlasting Love and Sugar Mama. Both of those are pretty good too. I think I like the Mariah Carey song.

Reflection is the best song on the album. The reveal of "i'm talking to my own reflection" made me smile. And it's the only RnBass-influenced song on the record that is halfway decent.

Already enjoyed BO$$ and Them Girls Be Like.

My initial impression was "oh, he bought some Timberlake and Usher cds" but then I realized it's more a direct line towards Frank Ocean. imo at least. I like it whatever his inspiration was.

uberweiss, Thursday, 5 February 2015 19:53 (nine years ago) link

i just discovered this french duo called paradis and their 3-track EP called couleurs primaires, and it's exactly the kind of dance-pop i love: mellow, sensual, good for balmy late summer nights. also sweetsexysmooth french male vocals! their most well-known track is called hémisphére from two years ago, which i guess was something of a hit on majestic casual (lol)

here's the two main singles, "garde le pour toi:"
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kWhR0RMcdfw

and my favorite between the two, "sur une chanson en français:"

If 2015 brings ten songs better than Baby Love and Tove Styrke's Ego i will be surprised and delighted.

i like that one

ciderpress, Tuesday, 10 February 2015 17:30 (nine years ago) link

Yeah, "Ego" is fantastic. I dubbed it Shambhala a few weeks ago, but it's probably legit pop tbh.

Johnny Fever, Tuesday, 10 February 2015 19:38 (nine years ago) link

The second Paradis track could almost be something off Royksopp's first album. I like it. Good voice too! Something rare these days.

daavid, Wednesday, 11 February 2015 07:29 (nine years ago) link

Ok the Sundfør album is out for everyone http://open.spotify.com/album/4Mewe6A62ZpJKmVzcaOixy

Or, the good that can come from someone with the ambition and guts to do ludicrous, theatrical pop, really go for it vocally too, and the songwriting chops to write the catchiest choruses of the season.

abcfsk, Monday, 16 February 2015 12:48 (nine years ago) link

Still digesting it - there's a lot going on! Harpsichord, church organ, and the 10 min track veers into Hans Zimmer territory for a bit. "Accelerate" is incredible.

been coming back to this one semi-often over the past week, at first wasn't sure whether i liked its vaguely uplifting teenpopish lyrics but now i love it, it hits very comfortable territory and is super hooky

that maya vik song is really great - kind of like real life is no cool taking a step from trippy disco into full-on bubblegum. i don't know anything about her except that she worked with dawn richard last year (the song itself was...nice but not memorable) which means dawn richard and lindstrøm are now one degree of separation away from each other

lex pretend, Sunday, 1 March 2015 21:00 (nine years ago) link

also about to x-post this to the lindstrøm thread obv

lex pretend, Sunday, 1 March 2015 21:00 (nine years ago) link

Tuomas nominated a Maya Vik song in last year's eoy poll and it was phenom. At that point, I fell in love with her first album Château Faux-Coupe from 2011. Very much looking forward to hearing album #2 (presumably this year).

Johnny Fever, Sunday, 1 March 2015 21:04 (nine years ago) link

Maya Vik also put out a mixtape with some new songs and highlights from Château Faux-Coupe in 2013:

This is bloody great isn't it. So many brilliant songs and really good sequencing too - love the way 'Accelerate' segues into 'Fade Away'

I'm happy people are digging Susanne's album, perhaps her best, although some earlier singles are unbeatable.

You had to be here to understand how instantly ubiquitous her music became when she debuted in 2007, with the most airplay of any artist that year. Of course that album was very different, more of a straightforward singer songwriter production with several v radio friendly tunes:

kinda feel like someone should mention hotline bling in this thread
i'm pretty sure i don't like it but it's interesting to me that drake is doing bruno mars and that's likely gonna make for his most marketable self.

hotline bling sounds to me like mars would be a more honest delivery system.

As we move into December, I'd like to drop a quick note to encourage any readers / lurkers / ilxors to post their favorite as-yet-unmentioned pop tracks from this year to the thread so that I can hoover them into the ongoing spotify playlist. Last chance for any accessible stragglers that may not already be in the lexicon.

I'm really happy about Zara Larsson's success in the UK and Europe and Australia but now I hope Lush Life becomes as big or a bigger hit than the one with MNEK.

four weeks pass...

I'm wrapping this playlist for the year. It has been updated with a few new adds (Tkay Maidza, Ronya, Kiiara, Flor) and includes every track mentioned on thread that is available via Spotify's US catalogue as of EOY 2015. If I missed something or if a track comes available sometime in the future, bump here to let me know and I'll add.

On track to do so here, and given that the song scans to me like a new and improved version of "Lean On" I wouldn't be surprised if it ends up smashing everywhere. Threw it onto the end of my ILX ballot, it's been my early summer bop
