Would it be cheeky of me if I linked to this thread? :o)
Musicians you would really punch in the face

Yes!

Any zealous declarations of fandom (i.e. "Killing Joke Uber Alles!" or "DMB RULES!") will immediately render any opinion you could submit moot, as you're subtracted any semblance of objectivity from your argument.
True. True.
But what I want to know is this: Is their a Dave-Matthew-fan equivalent of "honouring the fire"?

Lord Custos Epsilon (Lord Custos Epsilon), Saturday, 7 June 2003 23:27 (twenty years ago) link

False. False. That would mean that in order for your opinion to be valid, you can never really like anything.

oops (Oops), Saturday, 7 June 2003 23:36 (twenty years ago) link

The key word there, oops, was "ZEALOUS," as in over-the-top.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Saturday, 7 June 2003 23:47 (twenty years ago) link

So what is everyones favorite bands/musicians?

Mine are there for all to see Kara.

Franklin Ambrose (Franklin Ambrose), Sunday, 8 June 2003 06:51 (twenty years ago) link

kara- hang around long enough in this board and you'll find out.

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Sunday, 8 June 2003 09:01 (twenty years ago) link

Waitasec. I'm feeling deja vu.
I distinctly remember a couple years back, somebody started a thread about the Killing Joke. And it was flamed by hordes of Killing Joke Fans, the most vocal of which was a new guy calling himself Alex in NYC.
End Result: Alex in NYC stuck around and became the most Active Poster in the History of ILM, evah

flash foward to the present day....

somebody started a thread about the Dave Matthews Band. And it was flamed by hordes of DMB Fans...I fear that sometimes soon an "Alex in NYC"-esque DMB fan will begin posting early and often every day, until he becomes the Most Active Poster. And he will post photos of DMB in every thread...and the DMB Fan will demand that we all "Honour the..." (whatever it DMB fans honour) and the world will become a much darker and more horrid place.

Custos in writing "Matrix Reloaded" shockah!

J (Jay), Sunday, 8 June 2003 10:58 (twenty years ago) link

No DMB fan has done the posting of pics yet. Maybe they dont know how.

Franklin Ambrose (Franklin Ambrose), Sunday, 8 June 2003 12:40 (twenty years ago) link

ouch..that one hurt. No, I don't know how, don't really care how. I'm guessing no one has because this is an anti-dave board, and if anyone posted a picture of DMB they would never hear the end of the whining and bitching from people (like you). I'm sure they just dont want to waist time dealing with it.

Paige, Sunday, 8 June 2003 14:23 (twenty years ago) link

It's not an "anti-dave board' it's called I Love Music. Where we discuss music of all kinds. Use the search function at the bottom of the page you will find all sorts are discussed. Everyone is welcome here. Im fairly new myself but i find most people are friendly and welcome everyone posting here(apart from Calz for whatever reasons).

Franklin Ambrose (Franklin Ambrose), Sunday, 8 June 2003 14:28 (twenty years ago) link

I'm amazed that I missed this thread the first time around, since I hate Dave Mathews with a passion more fiery than a nova. Of course, my hatred is totally irrational, since the DMB's music is too boring to hate, kinda like late '80s Van Morrison.

J (Jay), Sunday, 8 June 2003 14:38 (twenty years ago) link

It seems to be a common occurence between Americans. Europeans dont care about DMB at all as most have never heard DMB. His visiblility is non existent in Europe. Much the same as Hootie & The Blowfish and Phish and other "jam bands".

In ten years time, will anyone still be listening to DMB?

I THINK NOT!

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Sunday, 8 June 2003 16:38 (twenty years ago) link

when he's in town like half of my office takes the day off to pay something like 75 dollars to go see him in a football stadium.

People in my office have paid several hundred dollars buying tickets from ebay. Why they didnt purchase them when details were announced i'll never know.

i don't see why not? ppl listen to kiss and led zep ;)

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Sunday, 8 June 2003 17:07 (twenty years ago) link

As long as they play, I'm sure people will listen to them. 10 years ago they probably said the same thing about them, and look where they are now.

Allison, Sunday, 8 June 2003 17:47 (twenty years ago) link

...on the downward slope of their career with DMCB breathing heavy on their neck

James Blount (James Blount), Sunday, 8 June 2003 17:56 (twenty years ago) link

Downward slope? Not quite, buddy. Just gettng started.

Paige, Sunday, 8 June 2003 19:13 (twenty years ago) link

Oh right like they're all of a sudden pull some new trick out of their ass and make some new album that'll just BLOW US ALL AWAY?? Like what, is Dave going to buy a couple dozen Marshall stacks and crank it to 11 and start singing like the guy from Cradle of Filth? Are they going to replace the drummer with Butch Vig? Are they going to make a ska record? No, they're going to make the same record they've made since 1994. Can we start filing this dude in Easy Listening already?

Millar (Millar), Sunday, 8 June 2003 19:49 (twenty years ago) link

aaah...i've been saving this thread up to read for ages and it took an hour but it was well worth it. especially as like a few others, i have never heard the dave matthews band, suspect i never will and don't really care... perhaps dave's obsession with stopping "bootleggers" stopped any of his records traversing the atlantic ? any more clarification on the equivalent group that anyone in europe might have heard of (i can't believe that coldplay have loads of improvising soloists or whatever...) ?

kieron, Sunday, 8 June 2003 20:24 (twenty years ago) link

There's been obvious changes in every record, not that I'd expect you to notice that. I never said their skills would get better...though they have gotten progressively more talented over the years and I don't expect it to stop now. But as long as they make music, I'm sure they'll still have an audience. Since there's no sign of breaking up, their "downward slope" probably won't be in the near future. (sorry)

paige, Sunday, 8 June 2003 20:41 (twenty years ago) link

Whatever mows yer lawn, Paige.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Sunday, 8 June 2003 20:43 (twenty years ago) link

some day they'll reach a transcendental state if our calculations of their steady improvement are correct.

at this point the worlds population will merge into one super being, and roam the galaxy looking for skins.

Ronan (Ronan), Sunday, 8 June 2003 20:44 (twenty years ago) link

you can measure their downward slope either in terms of creativity (paige, et. al: do you think Everyday was better than Under the Table and Dreaming?) or in terms of sales/popularity (in which case they peaked five years ago - check the numbers), but pretending they aren't past their peak - however you measure it - just because they're still going to release albums and they still have a fanbase is like pretending Molly Hatchet or Huey Lewis and the News haven't peaker either. Their best days are behind them - the future belongs to DMCB!

James Blount (James Blount), Sunday, 8 June 2003 20:50 (twenty years ago) link

any more clarification on the equivalent group that anyone in europe might have heard of ?

Sting or Yes?

Brain, Sunday, 8 June 2003 20:53 (twenty years ago) link

Oh please don't compare DMB to Yes. Yes have at least come out with some imaginative music in their day, however noodley and bloated they may irrefutably be.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Sunday, 8 June 2003 20:55 (twenty years ago) link

I am sure Dave Matthews Fans think the same about him.

Brain, Sunday, 8 June 2003 21:01 (twenty years ago) link

That his music is noodley and bloated? I agree.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Sunday, 8 June 2003 21:04 (twenty years ago) link

Sting is a much more interesting asshole than Dave Matthews ever will be

Millar (Millar), Sunday, 8 June 2003 21:11 (twenty years ago) link

True dat.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Sunday, 8 June 2003 21:21 (twenty years ago) link

Talentwise, yes. Everyday is better than UTTAD, but the future will tell if their peak has passed, or is yet to come. What is your obsession with the friggen cover band? I saw them in Myrtle beach and they were shit compared to DMB. Plus DMB actually wrote the stuff and is somewhat crative in playing their parts...doesn't take much to just play it how it's written (as DMCB do)

paige, Sunday, 8 June 2003 21:22 (twenty years ago) link

That his music is noodley and bloated? I agree.

haha. Cant see the ones on this board admitting that. Even though its quite true.

Brain, Sunday, 8 June 2003 23:22 (twenty years ago) link

I guess "noodley" and "bloated" are some sort of complex musical terminology that I'm not aware of. What exactly do you mean by them?

Paige, Sunday, 8 June 2003 23:55 (twenty years ago) link

OK, no sarcasm or anything: that's a really, really good question.

J0hn Darn1elle (J0hn Darn1elle), Monday, 9 June 2003 00:03 (twenty years ago) link

Millar: Sting is a much more interesting asshole than Dave Matthews ever will be
Ugh. Although I agree completely with the above statement, it still filled my brane with sudden, horrid mental images of Dave Matthews in a tiny white speedo talking about how yoga lets him fuck for 6 hours straight.

Lord Custos Epsilon (Lord Custos Epsilon), Monday, 9 June 2003 00:36 (twenty years ago) link

i just always assumed he was stoner rock and that was why he is so huge in boulder.

keith (keithmcl), Monday, 9 June 2003 00:38 (twenty years ago) link

You have a hard time figuring out how one could characterize DMB's music as "noodley" and "bloated"? Do your ears work?

"Noodley" (or might I spell it "noodly" or conceivably "noodlesque") could easily be applied to the band's ceaselessly masturbatory penchant for directionless "jamming" and soloing.

"Bloated," meanwhile, as used towards DMB could aptly sum up both their elephantine conceit of musical prowess and the overall lumpen sonic girth that characterizes their music.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Monday, 9 June 2003 00:44 (twenty years ago) link

Thank you. We're all refreshed and challenged by your unique point of view.

paige, Monday, 9 June 2003 00:51 (twenty years ago) link

despite my general sympathy for the anti-Daveness, I remain convinced that "Crash" is a pretty good song whose chorus resolves in a really pleasant way
