if we go back to the theory posited by myself and my fellow Phd in Hipster Studies, Mr. Weingarten, that there are circles of hipsterdom, with the center being truly "hipster" and the outer circles having some overlap and proximity, this kinfolk stuff is in one of the outer circles ... understandably associated with hipster culture by someone quite unfamiliar with it, but to hipster scholars, laughably far from it.

I maintain that this is a natural evolution of hipsterism that only those close to the ground will truly recognise as such. It doesn't surprise me that those in the ivory towers of academia are taking a while to catch up.

kinspiracy tumblr would have been better without the "white people" bit, just pandering to future denizens of a deeper circle of hell than that represented by the audience for "Kinfolk" itself.

(Surely this has been covered right? That they can't do this "white people" thing again without revealing their essentialist notions of other races? That other races aren't just "naturally creative," as their dopey little joke about making white people feel creative implies? That this is "natural rhythm" territory? That people in other races are just as good at being bourgeois and boring, and shouldn't have to endure a complex about it built around it being "acting white"?)

xp I think it goes both ways. I think it does imply essentialist notions about other races, but at the same time, not talking about white ethnicity centers whiteness as the invisible default.

There is an argument to be made that there's a soft 'blood and soil' fascism to the whole thing but you can say that about a lot of minimalist, back-to-nature, quasi-rustic stuff.
