loved the Gaffigan interview, especially when he called out Maron on his socio-stereotyping bullshit

^^ this bit was hilarious. Maron can be such a prat at times indeed. "I believe you were the ENEMY once?"

tayto fan (Michael B), Wednesday, 4 February 2015 13:05 (nine years ago) link

Cameron Esposito is great and funny, but I feel like she's turned into the comedy podcast community's resident "ask a lesbian" guest and this Maron interview is no different.

Johnny Fever, Monday, 9 February 2015 16:47 (nine years ago) link

turned into or wilfully positioned herself as?

oochie wally (clean version) (sic), Monday, 9 February 2015 21:24 (nine years ago) link

I think that's a fair criticism, but about halfway through her interview with Marc, she makes some comments to the effect of "I can only imagine if when I were coming out, there were people like me saying the things I'm saying about being a lesbian. It would have made things so much easier." She totally has a little bit of a cause in her art. Not an issue for me, but it is there. Marc attempts to back off the lesbian discussion a couple times, too.

I think she's pretty funny and quite intelligent and insightful.

Oh yeah, love her. I just hate seeing her become so one dimensional in the context of all these male-driven podcasts (which is probably just a reflection of how many male-driven podcasts I listen to).

christ, the nick tosches episode is a drag. two old men yelling at clouds, made worse by the fact that tosches sounds like mr plinkett of redlettermedia

bizarro gazzara, Wednesday, 25 February 2015 20:48 (nine years ago) link

Yeah, I'm about halfway in and considering giving up. Given Maron's intro, I was hoping for some more delving into the seediness of old Hollywood but, nope.

yeah i couldnt finish that nick tosches interview, just as i thought he was about to say something interesting he veers off into some boring rant about cellphones and the internet...with maron only too happy to encourage him

anyone ever read his books? ive been intrigued but its waned after that interview

tayto fan (Michael B), Wednesday, 25 February 2015 20:57 (nine years ago) link

i read the dean martin, jerry lee lewis and sonny liston ones years ago, and I enjoyed them at the time, so i was looking forward to hearing what he had to say. unfortunately it turned out to be cripplingly dull :(

bizarro gazzara, Wednesday, 25 February 2015 21:02 (nine years ago) link

you all need to be honest with yourselves. but no, you won't do it. because you are too scared! scared of maron and tosches! so you missed their mind expanding conversation about twitter.

I tried to read the Sonny Liston bio but it was painfully purple and I tapped out after a chapter or two.

Maron finally interviewed Sam Seder in the garage last week. so look forward to some old-fashioned WTF airing of grievances

RAP GAME SHANI DAVIS (Raymond Cummings), Wednesday, 25 February 2015 21:22 (nine years ago) link

Anyone want to guess how many minutes into the Kim Gordon interview until he tries to wow her with the fact that he has Trout Fish Mask Replica on vinyl?

Brio2, Wednesday, 25 February 2015 21:24 (nine years ago) link

Looking forward to finding out her guys are.

Brio2, Wednesday, 25 February 2015 21:25 (nine years ago) link

also whether she ever played a les paul jr

bizarro gazzara, Wednesday, 25 February 2015 21:26 (nine years ago) link

Either that interview will be amazingly great, or amazingly painful.

RAP GAME SHANI DAVIS (Raymond Cummings), Wednesday, 25 February 2015 21:27 (nine years ago) link

yeah - it really could go either way. it will be great if he reads her book (which is good and has plenty of family and relationship stuff for Maron to get armchair shrinky about) and it will be horrible if he asks a bunch of dad questions about rock music.

Brio2, Wednesday, 25 February 2015 21:36 (nine years ago) link

it's funny though - lots of disdain in that book for men in their 50's with peter pan syndromes - but she'll probably go easy on him

Brio2, Wednesday, 25 February 2015 21:40 (nine years ago) link

i guess the other horrible option is that he spends the whole episode clumsily flirting with her D:

bizarro gazzara, Wednesday, 25 February 2015 21:54 (nine years ago) link

he'll spend the entire time making her grapple with what listening to Goo meant to him.

I dont think hes that big a Sonic Youth fan iirc

tayto fan (Michael B), Wednesday, 25 February 2015 22:09 (nine years ago) link

that's even worse though, he'll spout off about how much he "just didn't get it"

I still have an mp3 of the interview he did with Thurston on his post-Morning Sedition radio show from around the time Rather Ripped came out and before Air America completely collapsed.

Johnny Fever, Wednesday, 25 February 2015 22:20 (nine years ago) link

awkward flirting AND asking her to explain her music

tayto fan (Michael B), Wednesday, 25 February 2015 22:24 (nine years ago) link

clumsy flirting + tube amp talk, then they end up dating and sonic youth reforms as a boogie band with maron instead of thurston

(as if he didn't think a long time about exactly this scenario)

That Thurston Moore interview isn't as bad as I was expecting. The 70s NY rock scene talk is interesting at least. But yeah, you can tell he's not a fan. "My Bloody Valentine or whatever the kids are playing!" in 2008 is prime Maron and he's at his most ridiculously jurassic when talking about Noise bands with him.

tayto fan (Michael B), Wednesday, 25 February 2015 23:12 (nine years ago) link

How many times has Maron dropped Fred Frith's name at this point? Seems to be his go-to reference (along with The Residents and Eno) whenever more "out" music comes up.

spastic heritage, Thursday, 26 February 2015 02:43 (nine years ago) link

He's only just now really exploring more music, so I'll cut him some slack for having a limited frame of reference nine years ago.

Holy shit, I just realized that Rather Ripped is nine years old!

Johnny Fever, Thursday, 26 February 2015 02:52 (nine years ago) link

I was going to say, he's been posting some really decent stuff that he's been getting into lately. Seems to be a big Ty Segall fan, but who can blame him?

He's been hanging out at Gimme Gimme records in LA, even "dj'd" the opening of their expanded store recently. I wouldn't be surprised if the clerks there are contributing to his education.

dan selzer, Thursday, 26 February 2015 13:25 (nine years ago) link

God I love hearing maron fans talk about a middle aged hipster like he's a 12 year old who wandered into a record store.

"Maron if you like rage you gotta check out funkadelic..."

*maron nods excitedly, eager to earn the approval of these cool adults twenty years younger than him*

da croupier, Thursday, 26 February 2015 14:58 (nine years ago) link

by "maron fans" do you mean "maron"?

Brio2, Thursday, 26 February 2015 15:03 (nine years ago) link

I'm sure he qualifies as one

da croupier, Thursday, 26 February 2015 15:04 (nine years ago) link

ha yeah and he loves talking about his record store adventures, big bit about buying beefheart in his netflix special

he's coming here and it's $69 for the cheapest ticket!

Brio2, Thursday, 26 February 2015 15:05 (nine years ago) link

yeah in fairness to him, he does concede that he had no time for music at all for a good few years. so i guess you could cut him some slack for that.

tayto fan (Michael B), Thursday, 26 February 2015 15:11 (nine years ago) link

Are there any episodes of this podcast that are actually funny? Almost every episode I've heard is two comedians sitting down and almost pointedly not being funny. I appreciate the serious discussions sometimes, but I generally I find so little entertainment value here. Even that famed two-hour Louis C.K. interview barely had a joke in it.
