Are we comparing Kanye to Paul now or Paul in the 60s and 70s?

Free Me's Electric Trumpet (Moodles), Wednesday, 28 January 2015 00:11 (nine years ago) link

we're comparing Kanye 30 years from now to Paul McCartney when he was 11

Would have voted Paul, he could smoke Kanye under the table

JoeStork, Thursday, 29 January 2015 02:21 (nine years ago) link

Ew

Hammer Smashed Bagels, Thursday, 29 January 2015 02:55 (nine years ago) link

808s is his best and most interesting album, how is this not the accepted wisdom re kanye

♛ LIL UNIT ♛ (thomp), Thursday, 29 January 2015 04:16 (nine years ago) link

having a real twilight zone moment here

♛ LIL UNIT ♛ (thomp), Thursday, 29 January 2015 04:16 (nine years ago) link

808s was pretty divisive at the time and got set up to be the kind of commercial disappointment/backlash moment that Yeezus actually ended up being, but it won the war and had huge radio songs and sold millions and has an enduring legacy of influencing Drake and all these other big records/acts that came after. but in terms of his catalog the people that rate it #1 are always gonna be a small passionate cult.

some dude, Thursday, 29 January 2015 04:49 (nine years ago) link

808s is the most cohesive album, it's definitely something you buy into or leave on the shelf, no real singles or w/e though

hadn't thought about it, but is it the only Kanye album with no Jay Z content?

mh, Thursday, 29 January 2015 14:59 (nine years ago) link

yeah for a lot of guys under 25 Kanye starts with 808s.

like for a lot of guys there's no Jay Z before The Black Album.

;_; don't say these things, Alfred

I still remember the time this dude at a Jay-Z show I went to was playing Jay-Z tunes (without headphones, fuckin dick) and then boasted he was gonna play some obscure old Jay-Z track everybody probably didn't even remember, and then he starts playin...Linkin Park/Jay-Z's version of "Encore". and this concert was in 2011.

Hammer Smashed Bagels, Thursday, 29 January 2015 17:32 (nine years ago) link

is it possible the dude was nose-tweaking heads with that? "lol, they're expecting something from reasonable doubt well, hee hee..."

da croupier, Thursday, 29 January 2015 17:34 (nine years ago) link

where by "probably didn't even remember" he really meant "probably would like to forget"

da croupier, Thursday, 29 January 2015 17:34 (nine years ago) link

he spent about an hour talking to his g/f about how Jay-Z just *had* to play "99 Problems" because it was his ultimate song and then kept reciting the first line over and over again, so I'm pretty sure the issue was he didn't realize there was a world pre-2004.

Hammer Smashed Bagels, Thursday, 29 January 2015 17:41 (nine years ago) link

sorry, 2003

Hammer Smashed Bagels, Thursday, 29 January 2015 17:42 (nine years ago) link

haha ok was just projecting why I'D drop "numb/encore" on the crowd at a jay-z concert

da croupier, Thursday, 29 January 2015 17:51 (nine years ago) link

yeah for a lot of guys under 25 Kanye starts with 808s.

still don't understand how this is possible

i do think 808s is the most genuinely brave and weirdest album of kanye's career, way more than any of the ART ART ART I AM AN ARTIST stuff he's done since

lex pretend, Thursday, 29 January 2015 18:03 (nine years ago) link

you are marveling at people not being aware of music before a certain date

just making sure that's what's going on here

eh 808s was also the peak of his POP ART period, though. for me the part of the "Heartless" video where a rotoscope animation Kanye emotes in front of portraits of Jetsons characters always represented the pitiful nadir of his ambitions as an aesthete.

some dude, Thursday, 29 January 2015 19:02 (nine years ago) link

i dunno, i found those portraits of jane, judy and rosie to be a such a bold, unique way to cop to one's madonna-whore-robocop complex

da croupier, Thursday, 29 January 2015 19:09 (nine years ago) link

lol mind blown

808s had some of Kanye's most successful commercial hit singles though.

MrExplorer, Friday, 30 January 2015 19:29 (nine years ago) link

I feel like "people just aren't aware of his history" is not a legit move wrt Kanye West

♛ LIL UNIT ♛ (thomp), Saturday, 31 January 2015 02:48 (nine years ago) link

like from the faux-backpacker humbrag schtick of college dropout onwards his whole career is based around being deliberately past-negating with each big record
