I'm gonna have to postpone the Italo poll rollout until the week of Feb 9th. If anyone wants to start a new poll in the meantime, that's cool with me.

I'm gonna have to back out of the Coltrane poll; I'm not familiar enough with too much of his work (pre-Classic Quartet), and I'm pretty sure turnout will be in the low single digits.

Montgomery Burns' Jazz (Tarfumes The Escape Goat), Tuesday, 3 February 2015 23:32 (nine years ago) link

I'll queue up for the next spot I guess, though I kind of wonder if we should have like a month to vote given the nature of the poll.

Hollinger Escape Plan (Leee), Tuesday, 3 February 2015 23:54 (nine years ago) link

duly noted

Οὖτις, Tuesday, 3 February 2015 23:55 (nine years ago) link

Looking forward to epics but agree -- also maybe a nomination period??

groundless round (La Lechera), Wednesday, 4 February 2015 00:33 (nine years ago) link

I have no idea what an "epic" even is (just like I had no idea what "classic rock" is) so I'll let you guys figure it out

Οὖτις, Wednesday, 4 February 2015 00:34 (nine years ago) link

It's it.

(What is it?)

emil.y, Wednesday, 4 February 2015 00:41 (nine years ago) link

I thought it was a song > 10 min long? I'm not sure if 10 was the magic # but length was a defining characteristic.

groundless round (La Lechera), Wednesday, 4 February 2015 00:46 (nine years ago) link

it's in your face but you can't grab it

mookieproof, Wednesday, 4 February 2015 01:07 (nine years ago) link

i don't want to go next or really - like i'm not feeling particularly up to running any polls atm so maybe just indefinitely postpone my slot

Mordy, Wednesday, 4 February 2015 01:19 (nine years ago) link

Οὖτις, thanks for taking the lead on managing the queue, it's much appreciated.

Just wanted to mention a couple of things. I'm out on the Bacharach and solo Beatles polls; C. Grisso/McCain volunteered for that one, and the other one is either up for grabs or up for deletion. And crüt got steamed, and rightly so, when another poll jumped ahead of CCR late last year, so maybe check in with him before bumping Epics up ahead of Creedence.

And with that, I officially hand you the batteries to the Pollmaster's Taser.

I thought it was a song > 10 min long? I'm not sure if 10 was the magic # but length was a defining characteristic.

Yes, I'm still debating with myself what that number is though. First instinct is 20, but then that'd leave out my favorite 18-minute songs.

Hollinger Escape Plan (Leee), Wednesday, 4 February 2015 01:37 (nine years ago) link

Gonna vote this one up pretty high.

Οὖτις: You lost Yo La Tengo up near the top of the list. It was pending, but I needed to delay until school lets out; I think we left it where mookieproof and van horn street were going to run the poll, and I was going to do images.

clemenza, Wednesday, 4 February 2015 01:50 (nine years ago) link

Yo La Tengo/Dump (and other side projects), preferably.

clemenza, Wednesday, 4 February 2015 01:51 (nine years ago) link

leee will determine it based on his fave bardo pond songs

Not far from the truth.

Hollinger Escape Plan (Leee), Wednesday, 4 February 2015 01:56 (nine years ago) link

yes, thanks Shakey for taking this back over, i really didn't want to do it again. it hard to do without mod access.

that being said and since i have done this before, you missed a few (really think you should keep the number order:

56. Spaceman 3 (& descendants) - Elvis Telecom
58. Yo La Tengo/Dump - clemenza
60. The Boo Radleys - Bee OK

Bee OK, Wednesday, 4 February 2015 02:52 (nine years ago) link

so Boo Radleys are next?

or is P-Funk next?

― Οὖτις, Friday, October 24, 2014 1:25 PM (3 months ago)

i can't do The Boo Radleys right now because of work. so i think that will be coming around February of 2015 after we do all the end of the year stuff.

― Bee OK, Wednesday, October 15, 2014 8:17 PM

btw, The Boo Radleys poll is still on track for February of 2015, going to be fun. won't be the first one, maybe the second or third one that will happen after the EOY polls wrap up.

― Bee OK, Tuesday, January 20, 2015 10:35 PM (2 weeks ago)

Bee OK, Wednesday, 4 February 2015 02:53 (nine years ago) link

oh, there is also this: 61. Stooges/Iggy Pop - flopson got bumped to 126 because he was not on ILX for a few months but now:

Looks like flopson had himself banned in February. We can put Iggy/Stooges on hold on the assumption he'll be back someday, or someone else can take that one. Or if anyone knows him IRL, tell him all is forgiven please come home.

i think earliest i could do this would be like, may/june

― flopson, Saturday, January 17, 2015 2:16 PM

61. P-Funk - Οὖτις
61. Stooges/Iggy Pop - flopson

Bee OK, Wednesday, 4 February 2015 03:44 (nine years ago) link

did the discussion regarding a 2000-2014 tracks/albums poll this summer ever move from the EOY 77 tracks thread to this one?

gr8080, Wednesday, 4 February 2015 03:54 (nine years ago) link

20 minutes is too long for epics - I propose 8:30 minutes so that I can vote for 'November Rain'.

ArchCarrier, Wednesday, 4 February 2015 12:55 (nine years ago) link

How about 8+?

how's life, Wednesday, 4 February 2015 13:00 (nine years ago) link

so we're not going in the order already established?

example (crüt), Wednesday, 4 February 2015 13:01 (nine years ago) link

I guess this is kind of a hectic time for me, so if leee wants to go before me I'm down.

example (crüt), Wednesday, 4 February 2015 13:03 (nine years ago) link

I thought it was a song > 10 min long? I'm not sure if 10 was the magic # but length was a defining characteristic

Whatever the criteria, if "Rime of the Ancient Mariner" is excluded on a technicality, this will be a FALTS POLL.

hardcore dilettante, Wednesday, 4 February 2015 13:25 (nine years ago) link

If "epics" poll is really about any 10/20/xx minute track in any genre, I'm stoked for that! It needs a pretty strict nomination process though, I can think of a a couple of hundred ambient tracks alone that would qualify.

I'd say the minimum running time must be at least 10 minutes, though. If you set it at 8 or something, there are way too many "normal", not-particularly-lengthy-for-its-genre tracks valid in genres like metal, techno, jazz, prog rock, etc.

Tuomas, Wednesday, 4 February 2015 13:27 (nine years ago) link

Maybe there rules would make it work?

1) A track must be at least 10 (or 15/20, whatever you decide) minutes long to be valid.

2) A track that's shorter than 10/15/20 minutes can be valid if it's at least twice as long as the second-longest track on the same album.

This way you could include tracks that are not super-long "objectively", but still epic within their own context/genre.

Tuomas, Wednesday, 4 February 2015 13:31 (nine years ago) link

what if it only was released as a single? (Beat Bop for instance)

gr8080, Wednesday, 4 February 2015 13:37 (nine years ago) link

2) A track that's shorter than 10/15/20 minutes can be valid if it's at least twice as long as the second-longest track average track length on the same album.

How about this? Some albums have two epic songs on them, and this rule would (almost) allow 'November Rain'.

ArchCarrier, Wednesday, 4 February 2015 13:49 (nine years ago) link

Not 'Estranged', though...

ArchCarrier, Wednesday, 4 February 2015 13:51 (nine years ago) link

"Beat Bop" isn't super-long within the context of old school rap, the full-length "Rapper's Delight" is 15 minutes, and many other old school singles are around 10 minutes too.

I doubt Leee or anyone is gonna start calculating average track lengths within a whole genre, so non-album singles would still be problematic... But I don't see how this poll could be run in a non-problematic way, since the definition of "epic" length varies so much between genres.

Tuomas, Wednesday, 4 February 2015 14:32 (nine years ago) link

ok I don't have mod priveleges fyi (don't want them either) but I will try my best to keep up with all the comments on this thread. I was thinking about this yesterday. Would a 2010-14 poll really be all that fun? At this point, I think it'd be more fun to poll the years spanning the life of ilx up to now. 2001-2014, because we could rewrite A LOT of history that way (which might be a bad thing, but it also might not be).

― Johnny Fever, Friday, January 23, 2015 1:31 PM (1 week ago)

[...]

plan would be to do it like sometime this summer right?

― call all destroyer, Friday, January 23, 2015 1:42 PM (1 week ago)

When did ILM officially begin? Was it 2000 or 2001? (I didn't get here until 2002, and didn't start participating with any regularity until 2003.)
