not this year, but i keep seeing the old shaw bros-style poster for it in south london and had to reinvestigate. not showstopping but its good imo. showtime-style flows. hes sounding good if you ask me. better than he has in a while.

Really no Murlo fans. Too much melody, fun for ILX?

https://soundcloud.com/djmurlo/nts-radio-003-040215

You're all so jaded on ILX you have a hang up on grime, a genre so new it only popped up in the early 00's or whatever? and can't take anyone calling anything but wonder years grime grime? Come on Murlo is fuck'd.

whiney is a known anti-english racist due to traumatic overexposure to english breakfasts

the mere mention of grime is triggering because it reminds him of the blackened congealed blood pudding residue and charred bacon

anima corrective (nakhchivan), Saturday, 7 February 2015 02:12 (nine years ago) link

Blood Pud is a mad one to be fair. it should have been subbed for Yorkshire Pud years back. i still have no idea what a whiney is btw. Its been years still no idea. Is a whiney a thing? Is ILX a whiney?

That's great, and seems to be building a lot of momentum, which is great considering the British public have been firmly un-arsed about her up until now. If all else fails, go for the meme.

Stormzy track isn't exactly what I'd call tight but it's worth it for "I'll come to your team, fuck shit up, I'm David Moyes".

This is a quick, quarterly reminder that all available tracks mentioned on this thread (and a few album selections) are being posted as updated to a thread-specific Spotify playlist that I'm maintaining. I just did a quick sweep prior to posting this message and updated as of today with everything that's been added on Spotify since it was first mentioned.

That playlist is currently a bit more than an hour of music and is clickable below.
Give it a spin and subscribe if you want to listen along through the year.

The JME album feels almost exactly like the sort of mid-tier record that could have come out on BBK pretty much any time in the last eight years or so, total absence of bar-raising there. Too many self-righteous vegan bars as well. I do like the bit when Big Narstie shouts 'BATISTUTA!' though.

I put on Shutdown straight afterwards and there was just so much more energy and urgency there.

I for one do take "weightless" as a pejorative, unintended as it is is. Grime has gone from purpose-built MC tools to purposeless instrumentalizm: not what I'd call "advance". A form of music that once served as a vehicle for individual and social expression – explosive with individual hunger, freighted and feral with social demand - has been reborn as art-muzak. Superficially jagged and challengingly ugly; ultimately placid.

man there's just

so many weird take-it-as-given about the functions of music both generally & specifically in this

Joan Crawford Loves Chachi, Sunday, 14 June 2015 12:22 (eight years ago) link

Yes - for one thing could've been written 20 years ago about hip hop. And just as false a dichotomy now as then, given the wealth of strong vocal grime itt.

nashwan, Sunday, 14 June 2015 12:42 (eight years ago) link

The Reverend, Sunday, 14 June 2015 22:16 (eight years ago) link

the late great, Monday, 15 June 2015 06:34 (eight years ago) link

if you'd read the original post its pretty clear SR was responding to a wire piece about yameneko/mr mitch etc. he clearly wasnt referring to stuff like skepta or stormzy.

surely its much more 'weird take-it-as-given' (rockist?) to propose that proper instrumental albums/structural abstraction/melodicism are somehow an 'advance' for the genre

it IS a bit ironic that reynolds wrote liner notes for planet mu's terror danjah comp, the release that probably lead to all this 'weightless' stuff. but even then, that was much more to do with planet mu removing TD from his true context as mc tools (i remember a woebot blog post at the time lamenting the choice to release only instrumental versions, unfortunately forgetting that 'cock back' and 'boogyman'aside, the vocal tunes on aftershock were generally pretty crap. still, the point stands)

i'm really enjoying the recent grime resurgence and ive been hearing some good 'proper' grime on mode fm recently, though im still yet to hear any new mcs that particularly stand out.

Benny B, Monday, 15 June 2015 08:59 (eight years ago) link

paolo, Saturday, 3 October 2015 13:46 (eight years ago) link

don't get me wrong, i like it too but it's rather one-note

the late great, Saturday, 3 October 2015 16:37 (eight years ago) link

I was open-mouthed in awe for the first half of it, convinced that we finally had a commercial grime release that came close to capturing the intensity of the best radio sets - Kano sounds revitalised in this context, D Double still reassuringly useless in anything other than full eye-popping intensity, Scrufizzer bars amazing, clearly Black Butter aren't going to ruin him entirely. But the Jammer track seemed to be hinting at a shift up a level that never quite came, the final stretch wasn't the victory lap I'd been anticipating and it sort of ran out of steam towards the end, like he'd shunted a few of the ropiest beats and bars at the back end. Still excellent on balance though.

Matt DC, Saturday, 3 October 2015 16:46 (eight years ago) link

I mean, it did have me walking through London feeling like I was Megatron, which was surely the desired effect.

Shame it's such a non-stop bro-fest though.

the new maxsta ep is really great, i love how much of the title track's video was filmed in canary wharf, which has been a malevolently looming presence in east london for so long. there's a really effective balance between maniac and boothroyd productions, maxsta is so good at handling the more awkward latter. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=k5Srbw68axc

^^^ Also Kano over the XCXD BXMB beat is brilliant and rubbish in equal measure, right up until the point where he goes full Alan Partridge with "your girl's pum-pum stinks like the A13 Beckton exit", which is quite a location-specific diss.
