Marcello Carlin (nostudium), Thursday, 6 July 2006 10:53 (seventeen years ago) link

Charles Mingus. Everyone loves Charles Mingus.

Or Rahsaan Roland Kirk. If you hate Roland Kirk you hate life.

J Arthur Rank (Quin Tillian), Thursday, 6 July 2006 11:45 (seventeen years ago) link

thanks mr jazz douche, i feel less bad about suggesting Wir sind Helden now

fez (fez), Thursday, 6 July 2006 11:57 (seventeen years ago) link

How about jethro Tull? And Mountain. Everyone loves Mountain! if you don't love Mountain, you probably don't love Black Oak Arkansas either what's wrong with you?!

DAVE, for #1 Hits of yesterday and today! (dave225.3), Thursday, 6 July 2006 12:08 (seventeen years ago) link

I don't love Mountain.
I don't love Black Oak Arkansas either.
What's "wrong" with me is that I'm not you.

Marcello Carlin (nostudium), Thursday, 6 July 2006 12:23 (seventeen years ago) link

oh, get one seriously

DAVE, for #1 Hits of yesterday and today! (dave225.3), Thursday, 6 July 2006 12:24 (seventeen years ago) link

teh_kit has 22 friends (g-kit), Thursday, 6 July 2006 14:06 (seventeen years ago) link

Maybe finding a song that everyone loves is easier? No it probably isn't...

A friend and I once (1993) concluded after discussing the matter for a few minutes that everybody liked "Two Princes" by the Spin Doctors... Oh boy.

willem -- (willem), Thursday, 6 July 2006 14:11 (seventeen years ago) link

Deee-Lite, obviously.

is in the heart (mike h.), Thursday, 6 July 2006 14:16 (seventeen years ago) link

I like the idea that everyone secretly loves Tull, but I'll venture Moloko. Or Lieutenant Pigeon.

NickB (NickB), Thursday, 6 July 2006 14:22 (seventeen years ago) link

80s Prince seems like a winner - but it's a bit reductive/cheating to not consider the artist's entire output. even there tho the great stuff is so great that can even the bad stuff make one not love Prince?

Konal Doddz (blueski), Thursday, 6 July 2006 14:30 (seventeen years ago) link

i don't even like Prince. sorry.

teh_kit has 22 friends (g-kit), Thursday, 6 July 2006 14:39 (seventeen years ago) link

I can get behind the Jackson 5, whoever up there was wondering. They did "I'll Bet You" on their first record, which is a plus. And in general I'm a big fan of that early- to mid-70s Motown production sound.

Shakey Mo Collier (Shakey Mo Collier), Thursday, 6 July 2006 14:46 (seventeen years ago) link

How about Tom Waits?

Stephen Bush (Stephen B.), Thursday, 6 July 2006 15:47 (seventeen years ago) link

yeah! tom waits!

what about the staple singers?

what about the sonics!

marbles (marbles), Thursday, 6 July 2006 15:51 (seventeen years ago) link

Scott Seward hates Nina Simone? I don't understand. How could he?

How did The Zombies get vetoed? Or Marvin Gaye?

Is there anybody who hates Young Marble Giants?

Owen Pallett (Owen Pallett), Thursday, 6 July 2006 16:13 (seventeen years ago) link

Jay-Z?

If you know it, you love it, or at least like it. Don't lie.

nicky lo-fi (nicky lo-fi), Thursday, 6 July 2006 16:20 (seventeen years ago) link

if the answer is not Nick Drake, I am the monkey's uncle...

hank (hank s), Thursday, 6 July 2006 16:25 (seventeen years ago) link

wtf is the matter with you people?

FAN DEATH (teenagequiet), Thursday, 6 July 2006 16:32 (seventeen years ago) link

I've never heard of WTF Is The Matter With You People?...were they on Dischord?...(they sound too "in your face" for my tastes)...

hank (hank s), Thursday, 6 July 2006 16:35 (seventeen years ago) link

i only like one song on the avalanches album and nick drake is a dullard

The Lex (The Lex), Thursday, 6 July 2006 17:06 (seventeen years ago) link

How can anyone hate the Kinks??? I simply do not understand how that's possible.

musically (musically), Thursday, 6 July 2006 17:09 (seventeen years ago) link

Like I mentioned already, I think the answer is Tom Waits, clearly.

Or maybe Elvis Costello.

Anyone who doesn't like Waits or Costello is nuts.

Stephen Bush (Stephen B.), Thursday, 6 July 2006 19:17 (seventeen years ago) link

yes yes but you see both of those dudes are boring and elvis costello is not only boring but actively sucks

FAN DEATH (teenagequiet), Thursday, 6 July 2006 19:20 (seventeen years ago) link

s h a n g r i - l a s

Billy Pilgrim (Billy Pilgrim), Thursday, 6 July 2006 19:24 (seventeen years ago) link

Hey, Elvis Costello can still write a decent tune, and he puts on a mean live show these days peppered with all the good shit over his entire career. You must be crazy.

How about Yo La Tengo?

Stephen Bush (Stephen B.), Thursday, 6 July 2006 19:29 (seventeen years ago) link

yo la tengo have some good songs and one or two classy albums even but to say that you "love" them suggests that your sum experience with the emotion consists of having made out with your hand a few times when you were 12

FAN DEATH (teenagequiet), Thursday, 6 July 2006 19:37 (seventeen years ago) link

I'm going to forgo discussion of my hand and revert to the Talking Heads. Who doesn't like 'em?

cosmo vitelli (cosmo vitelli), Thursday, 6 July 2006 19:56 (seventeen years ago) link

PEOPLE WITH TASTE

FAN DEATH (teenagequiet), Thursday, 6 July 2006 20:00 (seventeen years ago) link

man i'm mainly kidding but come on, you can't offer up something like that seriously

FAN DEATH (teenagequiet), Thursday, 6 July 2006 20:02 (seventeen years ago) link

aside from the fact she can't sing or play an instrument

She learned to play guitar! Sorta! That counts for something...maybe not. I love Madonna.

Talking Heads I like ok, but I could take 'em or leave 'em really.

Marmot 4-Tay: forth-coming, my child. forth-coming most righteous champion (mar, Thursday, 6 July 2006 20:05 (seventeen years ago) link

Elvis Costello had some great moments in his early years (77-83, '86 at a push) but the past fifteen or so years is one long stream of suckitude.

I nominate JIMMY CLIFF.

Billy Dods (Billy Dods), Thursday, 6 July 2006 20:14 (seventeen years ago) link

no one likes your sad hat shit

take a snickers break, guy

Arial Pink (account), Thursday, 6 July 2006 20:22 (seventeen years ago) link

if that's supposed to be aimed at me (is it?), it's just kinda stupid to keep going on this because clearly the answer is "no," and so what's left is a bunch of dudes pointlessly announcing "hey, i like this band!" "hey! i like a different band!" ad nauseum. it's another lame list thread, except the listed items have nothing to do with each other. i mean, unless you actually think that EVERYONE loves elvis costello, which of course you don't!

FAN DEATH (teenagequiet), Thursday, 6 July 2006 20:30 (seventeen years ago) link

lotsa coffee = needlessly combative, btw

FAN DEATH (teenagequiet), Thursday, 6 July 2006 20:31 (seventeen years ago) link

Oh please. You're enjoying this thread as much as the next guy. It's just a kid's game, and it's not gonna end until everyone picks up their marbles and leaves. Plus, you (not you specifically) can't help but WANT there to be some elusive artist that's universally loved.

cosmo vitelli (cosmo vitelli), Thursday, 6 July 2006 20:46 (seventeen years ago) link

I'm more mystified that people keep bringing up bands (Yo La Tengo, EC, Talking Heads, etc.) who have already been unceremoniously drummed out of the running... however yes, obviously the answer is "no" there is no band that everyone loves because there's always someone like Geir with a weird politico-aesthetic agenda who will refuse to see any value in a given canonical performer. With Geir its James Brown, with dance-lovin indie haterz its probably the Velvets or something...

Shakey Mo Collier (Shakey Mo Collier), Thursday, 6 July 2006 20:47 (seventeen years ago) link

has anyone tried ESG? they are very loveable.

scott seward (scott seward), Thursday, 6 July 2006 21:00 (seventeen years ago) link

Of course (Shakey). And weird politico-aesthetic agendas aside, James Brown is still probably the closest any musical demi-god will ever come to being universally loved here.

cosmo vitelli (cosmo vitelli), Thursday, 6 July 2006 21:03 (seventeen years ago) link

yep

Shakey Mo Collier (Shakey Mo Collier), Thursday, 6 July 2006 21:12 (seventeen years ago) link

Deee-Lite, obviously.

On the basis that everyone can only remember one song by them, and everyone likes it, I'd go along with this.
