After using the same flip phone from mid-2009 until the beginning of this year, I am now on an iPhone 6 128 GB.

I haven’t even really taken it out and used it yet.

my kid found my old iphone 4 and is using it as an ipod touch. it seems so tiny i can't imagine using it for anything but an actual phone.

I will get a new laptop this year, if:
- it can run an external display with a resolution like the new iMac has, via a standard
- new Intel chipset
- biometric auth like iPhone (possibly optional)

mh, Friday, 30 January 2015 03:16 (nine years ago) link

I wouldn't know where to put a TouchID on a laptop itself but I can imagine having Handoff request a TouchID from your phone before unlocking the Mac. Or just unlock when your Apple Watch is nearby.

Be amazed if you get the first one, tbh. Is anything close to that bandwidth yet?

one month passes...

so i lost my cheap flip phone that i've had for years. i have an upgrade available w/ verizon so i thought i might as well get an iphone, but i don't really feel like paying for one and i'd rather get the free upgrade. to date i've basically tried to avoid thinking about this shit and was quite happy with my flip phone + an 32gb ipod touch, it worked fine.

looks like the only iphone i can get for free in my upgrade is an 8gb 5c. or i could get a pre-owned 16GB 5 (there might be a fee for it though_). some questions:

1. apparently there is not much of a difference between the 5 and the 5c except that the 5c looks like of cheap and plasticky? is the 5c a piece of junk? is there any advantage to going with the pre-owned 5?
2. is the 5s that much better than the 5c that i should pay $99 for it?

8gb seems pretty low for storage and i'd like to not have to carry around my ipod touch for music, seems advantageous to just have one device. i'm kind of behind the times though, is storage that important when you can use icloud access music in itunes? help please thanks!

marcos, Monday, 2 March 2015 19:18 (nine years ago) link

1. I'd get the 5c over the 5 for the reason the hardware is somewhat newer? But if storage is a concern, they are feature-identical.
2. Yes, easily.

if you are used to having a bunch of music on your device, you will want the storage.

what's better about it?

marcos, Monday, 2 March 2015 19:33 (nine years ago) link

(thanks btw for your response!)

marcos, Monday, 2 March 2015 19:33 (nine years ago) link

it's a generation newer, hardware-wise, meaning you will get software updates further in the future

mh, Monday, 2 March 2015 19:35 (nine years ago) link

get more than 8gb, thank me later

the most painstaking, humorless people in the world (lukas), Monday, 2 March 2015 19:36 (nine years ago) link

fwiw the 5c is the same hardware as the 5, but manufactured a year later. the 5s is a year ahead of the 5, hardware-wise

also 8gb is really small

mh, Monday, 2 March 2015 19:36 (nine years ago) link

I don't use cloud, but apparently 20GB is like $1/month now, so that's only like $24 spread out over the whole period until your next upgrade, as opposed to paying an extra $99 for a 16GB 5S. But I really don't know anything about the other features of the 5c vs 5s.

walid foster dulles (man alive), Monday, 2 March 2015 19:40 (nine years ago) link

Only the 5c is available in an awesome froggy green though

walid foster dulles (man alive), Monday, 2 March 2015 19:41 (nine years ago) link

you don't stream music off icloud, though, it downloads to the device. unless you use the radio feature or spotify or w/e.

very few people have unlimited mobile broadband, so if you're off wifi it's a pretty big concern

mh, Monday, 2 March 2015 19:41 (nine years ago) link

got it. also what does your phone bill look like? how much extra would it typically cost to have an iphone vs. basic cell phone?

Basic cell phone means.... what exactly? I think if you're not streaming audio or watching youtube a lot or whatever, most people probably can get by on 2GB/month, but if you're using data-heavy apps or streaming media or anything like that, it ramps up quickly.

I am probably not a good person to ask on that because I am constantly doing all these things

mh, Monday, 2 March 2015 19:47 (nine years ago) link

marcos the 5s is worth it just for the fingerprint sensor - convenient, yes, but also worth the peace of mind

, Monday, 2 March 2015 19:49 (nine years ago) link

I forgot the 5s added that! 龜 otm

mh, Monday, 2 March 2015 19:49 (nine years ago) link

sorry basic cell phone meaning not a smartphone, i've had this flip phone and it is maybe $50 a month? i don't feel like paying much more but since i will have a smartphone i know i'll have to, i just don't know how much more a smartphone bill is vs a regular cell phone

marcos, Monday, 2 March 2015 19:50 (nine years ago) link

only your cell company can really say

mh, Monday, 2 March 2015 19:53 (nine years ago) link

I would expect to pay somewhere between $20-40 more per month for reasonable data service, but it really depends on the company and what plans they offer.

walid foster dulles (man alive), Monday, 2 March 2015 19:59 (nine years ago) link

got it, thanks everybody!

8gb isn't enough even if you do have your music elsewhere, as I do. Apple should be ashamed of selling a phone with an 8gb capacity right now. For one thing ios8 is not much less that 8gb in itself so you won't even have room for many apps and may even struggle with photos.

I disagree that it's cheap looking though. I think it's the best looking iphone.

We went from about 100 a month for the two of us (with flip phones) to about 165 a month for the two of us (with iphones and 3GB a month non-wifi data)

This isn't completely accurate. The ios8 update did need a lot of space to perform an OTA update (something like 5-6GB), but after the update process completed the actual os takes much less (just over 1GB), and you could bypass the space requirement by upgrading through iTunes (connect to a computer)... had to do this with several family members who had no space to upgrade.

That said, 8GB is still way too small. Go 16 or 32 if you can anyway afford it.

Nhex, Monday, 2 March 2015 23:27 (nine years ago) link
