Rolling Chuck D picks the winners in twenty fifteen thread.

--songs i really love

Rich Gang ft. Young Thug - "Lifestyle"

number 1 song of the year -- the best hook, a catchy beat of its own and some of the best lyrics. the total package.

Dej Loaf - "Try Me"

got stoned and listened to this song a lot because it sounds like some candyland lullaby

Bobby Schmurda - "Hot N****"

this one made me happy for new york

Snootie Wild ft. K Camp - "Made Me"

snootie had the most underrated verses of the year on this

--songs i like

Tyga ft. Young Thug - "Hookah"

heard this coming out of a store the other day and it made me wish it was a hit, if it was a solo thug song it probably would've been ... or maybe smoking hookah is not relatable or aspirational

Fetty Wap - "Trap Queen"

just a great song, though when i heard it on the radio it sounded less weird than i thought and more like a particularly good cash out song. i think seeing his wonky eye in the video tripped me out. this beat is pretty wild though.

Rae Sremmurd - "No Flex Zone"
Rae Sremmurd - "No Type"

these are both good radio hits but i can't really get that excited about these guys for whatever reason. i guess as rappers i don't find them compelling, i like "no type" as an extension of the downer party anthem aesthetic mike will established on "we can't stop" but the verses are kind of a snooze.

Shy Glizzy - "Awwsome"

for a straight gucci mane rip off this is pretty good as long as you don't think too much about the lyrics. his voice sounds great on this though.

-- remixes i can't abide by

ILOVEMAKONNEN ft. Drake - "Tuesday"

non-remix version of "tuesday" is a true original, standout track. drake version is straight bullshit.

Snootie Wild ft. Yo Gotti - "Yayo"

this is another song dulled terribly by the inclusion of a rapper who should have been kept far away from a rare flower of a song.

-- these songs are fine

Metro Thuggin - "The Blanguage"

i never really understood the love for this one ... verses are pretty good, i wish there was a hook though. a pretty middling young thug song, imo. also not sure we need young thug making explicit drake sequels.

Father ft. ILOVEMAKONNEN & Key! - "Look at Wrist"

i like the father axis in atlanta as a millennial update on dem franchize boyz (when their beats were blocky not snappy) but the rapping lets up too much. i like "nokia" more than "look at wrist" but even that is like 60 seconds of a good song. i'd like to hear father produce for some other rappers though.

-- eh

OG Maco - "U Guessed It"

i should prob like this song more but it never grabbed me. great beat though.

O.T. Genasis - "CoCo"

this song is weirdly inert to me. i don't like the beat at all, and the hook feels actively weighed down? the verses are pretty funny though.

Riff Raff - "Tip Toe Wing In My Jawwdinz"

really annoying hook. verses are actually decent. terrible video too. decent distillation of riff raff in all his glory at least.

ILOVEMAKONNEN - "I Don't Sell Molly No More"

annoying.

-- fuck travis scott

Travi$ Scott ft. Rich Homie Quan and Young Thug - "Mamacita"

fuck travis scott

the singing on "lifestyle" is so bad. like, i can't even get through the hook. i get what's good about the sentiment and the words but it's just unlistenable

lex pretend, Monday, 5 January 2015 17:21 (nine years ago) link

Hookah is a hit, it's in the hot 100 at any rate

deej loaf (D-40), Monday, 5 January 2015 20:31 (nine years ago) link

the thing about hookah i never rly came to terms with is when tyga abruptly comes in with the flat staccato cloudmatic / mathematics line sounding like a wu guy or someone else i can't quite recall

Coco is totally the song I would never play at home but I totally dig when I hear it out on the street

, Monday, 5 January 2015 21:20 (nine years ago) link

thing is i'm kind of p much at the kindly grandma stage of rap appreciation now so i was quite happy to accept kids finding coco fun and expressing themselves and all that cutesy shit. but then busta popped up and made it unbearably corny

r|t|c, Monday, 5 January 2015 21:40 (nine years ago) link

"No Type" or "Lifestyle" for me. Though I feel like I possibly prefer "No Type" over "No Flex Zone" for what are probably corny fuxxy reasons.

Tim F, Monday, 5 January 2015 21:54 (nine years ago) link

i'd be v much done with 'no flex zone' by now if it wasnt for irresistible "gold BEzel?! so SPEcial?!" karaoke squeaky backing vox duty

r|t|c, Monday, 5 January 2015 22:02 (nine years ago) link

I don't remember if we got into this in the funny voiced rapper poll thread (I can't remember that thread title), but a big part of the reason I love so many of these Internet-y hits is that they create a perception, real or imagined, that the door to rap stardom is open to anybody, even the most unlikely outsiders. I love that fantasy, and the sense that there are no gatekeepers, and that rap is truly a responsive, bottom-up genre where fans decide what deserves radio play. That's not a sense I get from any other format. Obviously the reality isn't as idealistic as all that, but every time I hear Thug or Rae Sremmurd or even Makonnen on the radio I get a charge like, shit, anything is possible.

Evan R, Monday, 5 January 2015 22:14 (nine years ago) link

it's always kinda been like that, i mean what's 'ice cream paint job' or 'this is why i'm hot' or 'laffy taffy'

deej loaf (D-40), Monday, 5 January 2015 22:24 (nine years ago) link

or 'crank dat'

deej loaf (D-40), Monday, 5 January 2015 22:25 (nine years ago) link

True, true. And that's always been part of the appeal; it just feels like the process happens a lot faster now, and that the artists benefiting from it are a lot more outside the box than they used to be. Where Mims and Dorrough just seemed like B-list copies of bigger name rappers cashing in on already popular sounds, a lot of 2014's crop seem like they're popularizing their own template

Evan R, Monday, 5 January 2015 22:33 (nine years ago) link

well in part that's bc there's no industry to work on artist development w/ young rappers

deej loaf (D-40), Monday, 5 January 2015 22:43 (nine years ago) link

if it wasnt for irresistible "gold BEzel?! so SPEcial?!" karaoke squeaky backing vox duty

totally the best part of the song

UK Horseshit Cru (dog latin), Wednesday, 28 January 2015 12:08 (nine years ago) link

You really think radio CONSPIRES against Chicago artists, deej? That's kinda... huge. From my persepective it looks a lot more like radio is letting anyone with a NYC affiliation (Shmurda, Genasis) get spins.

lol we've had this debate on here before i already pointed to the tweets of radio djs talking about how PDs refused to play chicago artists bc of the 'controversy' over violence, it's no conspiracy or secret

deej loaf (D-40), Wednesday, 28 January 2015 18:35 (nine years ago) link

just like they stopped playing Bobby Shmurda and T.I. records the moment they caught weapons charges

idk enough about the radio to comment but it does seem p obv even from afar that if king l was from ny the reax would be completely diff

r|t|c, Wednesday, 28 January 2015 21:08 (nine years ago) link

i wouldnt buy that shmurda specifially has been unfairly elevated tho, unless having experienced management counts as cheating

r|t|c, Wednesday, 28 January 2015 21:13 (nine years ago) link

Shmurda seems p natural considering his hit was literally a mixtape-style "freestyle" over an existing song

uncle banmee who can remember his live posts (Whiney G. Weingarten), Wednesday, 28 January 2015 21:30 (nine years ago) link

people have constantly tried to use controversy to suppress the commercial success of gangsta rap for 25 years, i supposed it's possible that it actually worked once

some dude, Wednesday, 28 January 2015 21:31 (nine years ago) link

eh its a lil from column a, a lil from ...

those kinds of from-the-block organic viral videos weren't taking off before chicago's stuff broke through in quite the same way, Shmurda got a deal off rip & Epic capitalized immediately, clearly benefitted from what happened in chicago. i don't think it was inorganic or anything. Like ... "Dont Like" was out in spring 2012 but didnt end up radio until 'ye remixed it, 'love sosa' came out in fall but didn't get a radio push until spring. 'hot' though was channeled straight to radio nationally

deej loaf (D-40), Wednesday, 28 January 2015 21:33 (nine years ago) link

like i could see it popping up on shazam in Los Angeles w/in days of it getting posted on blogs, definitely didn't work like that for any of these earlier artists
