i could have sworn there were two sketches that had all five singers chewing on garbage

(do you see)

lol Sia is weird and terrible

I mean her stage shows specifically, which I guess are designed to distract you from the fact that she doesn't want to be on stage

Spoiler: there's a mime doing sign language.

pelvic slang (GOTT PUNCH II HAWKWINDZ), Sunday, 18 January 2015 08:51 (nine years ago) link

I watched that. Sia with the visor or something hanging down so you couldn't see her face. I don't get her appeal, but she seems like the type of singer that Lady Gaga fans would like.

I liked the Bushwick Brooklyn sketch with Kevin Hart, Jay Pharoah and Keenan. Kate Mckinnon doing Justin Bieber's Calvin Klein ad also was kinda funny

curmudgeon, Sunday, 18 January 2015 22:58 (nine years ago) link

Sure was a lot of death by gunfire in this episode.

Was hoping that the monitor would have never started working again in the Instagram show sketch. That would have been a delicious disaster considering that the whole premise rode on being able to see the photos.

Johnny Fever, Sunday, 18 January 2015 23:00 (nine years ago) link

Yea, that mayo portion of the ending for the Bushwick Brooklyn sketch was a little unsettling.

curmudgeon, Tuesday, 20 January 2015 19:19 (nine years ago) link

JK Simmons and D'Angelo on 1/31

Johnny Fever, Tuesday, 20 January 2015 20:32 (nine years ago) link

Wow! That should be amazing. Or amazing for SNL, anyway.

I cannot imagine a universe where what that mime is doing is language

i didn't think it was so awkward, i like mooney's shtick

Was cracking up this week at how serious Kate & Aidy were on the "The Wishing Boot" song this week.

Michael Che seems to be settling into update pretty well. The Riblet bit with Bobby this week was great.

Michael F Gill, Tuesday, 27 January 2015 05:34 (nine years ago) link

I've had that goddamn song stuck in my head for a couple of days now.

It is quite an earworm!

He must have found a rare open date in his engagement calendar.

i don't think hosting SNL represents a financial windfall, or that a guy who did 4 Shrek movies needs one

some dude, Friday, 30 January 2015 04:49 (nine years ago) link

He's not hosting afaik. He's just coming back for the anniversary special.

Johnny Fever, Friday, 30 January 2015 04:54 (nine years ago) link

kind of a relief tbh dude hasn't been funny in 25 years

pelvic slang (GOTT PUNCH II HAWKWINDZ), Friday, 30 January 2015 08:02 (nine years ago) link

Despite which, how long do you figure his standing ovation will be?

If you've enjoyed the show in the last 30, he deserves one for being the first proof anything can come of it after the first five

da croupier, Friday, 30 January 2015 14:31 (nine years ago) link

Like yeah yeah norbit but he's easily one of the most important performers to come out of it

da croupier, Friday, 30 January 2015 14:32 (nine years ago) link

According to Uproxx, the last time Murphy set foot on the “SNL” stage was February 25, 1984, with host Edwin Newman and musical guest Kool & the Gang

Not true; Eddie hosted on December 15, 1984 (with musical guest Robert Plant and the Honeydrippers). Probably the best episode that season, with one of Eddie's (and SNL's) all-time career highlights, the "White Like Me" short film.

Trying to think of others on his level and it's arguably:

Bill Murray
Tina Fey
Jimmy Fallon
Al Franken
Ben Stiller?
Robert Downey Jr?
Julia Louis-Dreyfus?

well i'm talking about importance to the survival of the show, not just fame or worthiness for the mark twain prize

da croupier, Friday, 30 January 2015 17:34 (nine years ago) link

oh well then, Tim Kazurinsky no question

jeepers creepers, i just said eddie deserves the standing o

da croupier, Friday, 30 January 2015 17:38 (nine years ago) link

haha how do you make a short list of the biggest stars to come out of SNL and Al Franken and Jimmy Fallon are on it but not Will Ferrell, Chevy Chase, Adam Sandler, Mike Myers, ::trails off::

some dude, Friday, 30 January 2015 17:38 (nine years ago) link

Al Franken is probably the only competition Eddie has in terms of "importance" because he literally shapes American policy these days

uncle banmee who can remember his live posts (Whiney G. Weingarten), Friday, 30 January 2015 17:39 (nine years ago) link

Jon Lovitz and Norm MacDonald are another couple of tethers that helped to barely hold the show together over chasms of near-cancellation.

Runny Trumpet (Old Lunch), Friday, 30 January 2015 17:41 (nine years ago) link

yeah i guess the word could mean that. i was just thinking in terms of Stuart Smalley's box office record. (xp)

some dude, Friday, 30 January 2015 17:42 (nine years ago) link

lovitz yes but wasn't norm's biggest accomplishment behind-the-scenes pissing off don ohlemeyer?

da croupier, Friday, 30 January 2015 17:43 (nine years ago) link

I just mean that he was one of the only holdovers when the the show was floundering and the cast was rebuilt from the ground up, and also arguably the main reason why a lot of people were still watching at that particular time.

purely in terms of popularity, i would guess that adam sandler has even murphy beat. and slightly below that level, there's will ferrell.

I dunno. (amateurist), Friday, 30 January 2015 17:48 (nine years ago) link

and chris kattan. let's not forget chris kattan.

I dunno. (amateurist), Friday, 30 January 2015 17:49 (nine years ago) link

yeah but they also kept david spade and mark mckinney, and i don't know what the argument is that norm is the reason many people stayed - dude was not america's sweetheart

people i'd consider important to the show's survival

chevy chase - first breakout star
john belushi - first america's sweetheart
bill murray - first breakout star not from original cast
eddie murphy - only breakout star of the lorneless period
jon lovitz - only guy from 85 anyone liked
mike myers - got the kids into it
adam sandler - ran with that kids ball something fierece
will ferrell - first breakout star after the show resurrected from kids ball hell
tina fey - possibly more important as a head-writer, but largely erased kids ball from the show
andy samberg - viral pioneer

da croupier, Friday, 30 January 2015 17:50 (nine years ago) link

bill murray might be the SNL alum with the longest period of relevance, no?

I dunno. (amateurist), Friday, 30 January 2015 17:52 (nine years ago) link

Don't know how long it's been since you've seen the 93-94 or 94-95 seasons, but that last stretch with the previous cast is largely dire and the new cast were slow growers. Spade was only doing his little Snark Talk segment during his last season and McKinney wasn't much of a draw. I don't think it's too much of a stretch to say that Weekend Update was the diamond in that rough patch at least until Ferrell, Shannon, et al built up a decent head of steam.

Runny Trumpet (Old Lunch), Friday, 30 January 2015 17:59 (nine years ago) link

i'm not saying norm wasn't good and doesn't have his fans, i've just never heard any commentary from the snl folks along the lines of "thank god we had norm mcdonald"

da croupier, Friday, 30 January 2015 18:00 (nine years ago) link

where lovitz gets a lot of praise for being a glimmer of hope

da croupier, Friday, 30 January 2015 18:01 (nine years ago) link

i think you're conflating "norm was the only reason i was watching" with "norm was the only reason the network didn't cancel it"

da croupier, Friday, 30 January 2015 18:02 (nine years ago) link

Well, the former is certainly true, but while I wouldn't say the latter is explicitly true, they sure didn't have much else going on for about a year there.

Runny Trumpet (Old Lunch), Friday, 30 January 2015 18:04 (nine years ago) link

phil hartman biggest SNL mvp

LIKE If you are against racism (omar little), Friday, 30 January 2015 18:08 (nine years ago) link

He might still be my favorite performer overall but he unfortunately didn't make much of a splash outside of the show. I'm so glad he went out still doing quality work on Newsradio and The Simpsons, though.
