WTF with Marc Maron (it's a podcast)

Oh man, I bet. Nash seems tailor-made to irritate Maron. He irritates me, tbh.

In the end they find some common ground, but it's rocky going at times.

Man. I kind of want Maron and Nash to do a quarterly podcast together. They're both sort of sociopathic to each other, but they also have the courage to call each other out about their personality defects.

It was kind of telling when Nash was talking about his father's need to always redirect the topic of conversation towards himself and his problems (and how they were just as bad or worse) and Maron butting in to talk about himself and how his father did the same thing (to just as bad a degree... or worse).

I love Melanie Lynskey's accent so much. I need to go to NZ sometime.

I'd forgotten how much I kinda hated "Magnolia," but wonder if I'd feel differently about it if I returned to it now.

This interview with the Playboy interviewer guy was like Maron's version of that TPM article where all of the writer's questions were a variation of "Why didn't Iggy Azalea give Charli XCX a shout-out on "Fancy"?"

The Tim Conway drivers license story is cracking me up when I envision the events actually taking place.

I like Marc interviewing directors.

loved the Jason Nash and PTA interviews (for completely opposite reasons).

the Ricky Jay "never the less..." anecdote is the one that's been killing me.

I just got to the little diversion at the end where they tacked on a talk about records. It's basically the same convo Marc has had with 50 other people, but I love the jubilation he experiences when he encounters another people who listens to the same things he likes.

The key to my continuing enjoyment of Linklater's films is to ignore him as a person. He used to pimp Alex Jones bullshit and was passing out 9/11 Truther docs on the set of one of his movies.

i thought maron and pt anderson brought out something like the worst -- most pretentious and preening -- in one another. reminded me that although i admire some of his movies (or at least aspects of them), i still think anderson is fundamentally pretentious and shallow.

the drivers license story is great, though he didn't tell it very well.

I hope Marc was smart enough to grease the wheel of possibly getting Conway in for an episode.

Really enjoying the Andrea Martin one, even though I'm not sure I know who she is exactly. When Marc talks to women his age or older it's invariably great.

been catching up on a backlog of these recently. i had to give up on the melanie lynskey ep about 30 minutes in because mark's awkward flirting and insistence on getting her to agree that she was codependent was making me feel kinda queasy.

Didn't realize that Mike Judge's natural speaking voice is for the most part just "Butthead". This is great.

Loved Judge's story about the only way he got Gary Cole to crack a smile on set during Office Space was that coffee cup improv during the Aniston "sex scene".

I kept getting flashes of either Hank Hill or Butthead when listening to Mike Judge, that one & Schwartzman were very enjoyable.

Yeah, I liked the Schwartzman one. He came across as way more likable than I thought he would be. Considering the family he grew up in, he seems really grounded too.

definitely. he made me feel very lazy too, talking about working on music for three hours every night (!) after his family goes to bed.

Cameron Esposito is great and funny, but I feel like she's turned into the comedy podcast community's resident "ask a lesbian" guest and this Maron interview is no different.

I think that's a fair criticism, but about halfway through her interview with Marc, she makes some comments to the effect of "I can only imagine if when I were coming out, there were people like me saying the things I'm saying about being a lesbian. It would have made things so much easier." She totally has a little bit of a cause in her art. Not an issue for me, but it is there. Marc attempts to back off the lesbian discussion a couple times, too.

I think she's pretty funny and quite intelligent and insightful.

Oh yeah, love her. I just hate seeing her become so one dimensional in the context of all these male-driven podcasts (which is probably just a reflection of how many male-driven podcasts I listen to).

i figured that when she was on harmontown that was just Harmon being Harmon

Yeah, I'm about halfway in and considering giving up. Given Maron's intro, I was hoping for some more delving into the seediness of old Hollywood but, nope.

yeah i couldnt finish that nick tosches interview, just as i thought he was about to say something interesting he veers off into some boring rant about cellphones and the internet...with maron only too happy to encourage him

anyone ever read his books? ive been intrigued but its waned after that interview

i read the dean martin, jerry lee lewis and sonny liston ones years ago, and I enjoyed them at the time, so i was looking forward to hearing what he had to say. unfortunately it turned out to be cripplingly dull :(
