I have _no_ idea why Speedball wasn't big in the US... wasn't M.U.D.S. popular over there? Similar game, except more fantasy than sci-fi obv.

Most overrated game of the 90s? That screenshot says it all - four hideous deformed freaks in a completely undifferentiated space. My friend Matt and I played this a couple years ago, and every deathmatch ended with us running out of time before we even found each other to try and shoot it out. Like, "OK, I'm gonna stand still in this room. You come here and shoot me." "Fuck, how do I get over there?" This game sucks.

It's like a GCSE art project.

One of the most enjoyable weapons of the 8-bit era.
Mega Man 2 is such a sweet game. I can't remember whether it was IRL or ILX that I was talking to somebody about how it's this amazing, pre-Internet consensus across the culture - virtually everybody who played the Mega Man games back in the day just agreed by default that this was the best one! It really did have everything - maybe the definitive example of a series that perfected its formula early and then had no room to do anything but screw it up in later releases.
xpost omg pirates yES!!!!!
The themed robots also presented a long-term obstacle - it's not going to get any easier to think of robot concepts, after all. Already with Wood Man they were running into goofy ideas, and by the time you get to Choo-Choo Train Man, etc, the series has pretty much run out of gas.

― Abbott, Sunday, 4 May 2008 20:00 (sixteen years ago) link
"Pirates!"...what a wonderful game, and moreso than any other title of its era it pointed the way towards the future of gaming: foxes, not hedgehogs. Lots of different kinds of gameplay that add up into a cohesive world - so:
sailing, okay (sucks when the wind's against you) fencing, fuck yeah! searching for treasure fighting little sim army battles (sorta sluggish on C64) cutting deals in town managing your ship's inventory of stuff COMBAT AT SEA!!! assembling treasure maps upgrading to a better ship playing as different countries in different eras
...there was just a LOT of genuinely interesting decision-making packed into a game that never felt like you were just sitting there making decisions. The Xbox one was also really fun, although maybe a bit easy? (It's been a couple years.) I liked the Sim-ish language the people speak, especially the way people will exclaim "Brigligated!" when you accomplish important feats.
