i feel like i remember her once saying it would come out sometime in the fall, so we still got quite a ways if that's still true

SHITTTTTTT

markers, Monday, 9 March 2015 07:20 (nine years ago) link

since this is no longer gonna be on the album, I’m releasing it as a special thank you to everyone in Singapore, KL, Manila, Jakarta, HK, Shanghai, Beijing, Taipei, Seoul, Osaka, Nagoya and Tokyo who came out to the shows! It was an honor to play with a bunch of amazing bands and travel to places I would never otherwise be able to go

This song was never finished. its a demo from ~ the lost album ~, recorded early 2013. i lost the ableton file, so its not mixed or mastered. i tried to doctor the mp3 into a listenable state, but it was poorly recorded in the first place and never meant to be heard by anyone, so its a bit of a mess haha.

flappy bird (spazzmatazz), Monday, 9 March 2015 07:27 (nine years ago) link

oh man, finally some new music

how's life, Monday, 9 March 2015 09:40 (nine years ago) link

<3 this

, Monday, 9 March 2015 12:34 (nine years ago) link

this song is amazing, I can't believe it's an offcut! Or that supposedly it's only in rough demo form.

Either some serious humblebraggery or she's about to drop the album of the millennium

bae sremmurd (monotony), Monday, 9 March 2015 12:40 (nine years ago) link

Oh, she's seriously fucking with us.

how's life, Monday, 9 March 2015 12:42 (nine years ago) link

This is awesome.

Allen (etaeoe), Monday, 9 March 2015 12:54 (nine years ago) link

Wow this is great

admittedly my memory of the last album is shaky but am i wrong in thinking this is better than the majority of that?

dyl, Monday, 9 March 2015 15:07 (nine years ago) link

cool song!

"realiti" makes me so mad at the dweebs who discouraged her from making her big pop album. this is even better than "go."

soyrev, Monday, 9 March 2015 15:39 (nine years ago) link

"go" was real whatever, this is wonderful

"realiti" makes me so mad at the dweebs who discouraged her from making her big pop album.

^ exactly this!

Johnny Fever, Monday, 9 March 2015 15:56 (nine years ago) link

Agree xp

, Monday, 9 March 2015 15:58 (nine years ago) link

this is meant to be anything like a big pop move? k

lex pretend, Monday, 9 March 2015 16:18 (nine years ago) link

In context, sure. Was she going to make Teenage Dream? Probably not.

Johnny Fever, Monday, 9 March 2015 16:24 (nine years ago) link

this was the album she signed to rocnation to make, repeatedly warned fans would be mainstream, and debuted with a dubstep single she bragged about having been originally penned for rihanna. i don't personally think she would've met with great success, commercially, but it's clear that's what she was intending, and it's clear it i would have liked it very a lot.

soyrev, Monday, 9 March 2015 16:45 (nine years ago) link

is that really the narrative? never thought "go" was advertising some lost big pop album

"go" was never intended to be on any album

there isn't and hasn't ever been any other grimes music that sounds like "go"

she signed to roc nation management (not the label arm, the management arm) because they're a great management company. roc nation also manages matthew dear.

the "lost album" was scrapped around the time she changed management. "go" didn't even exist yet, in any form. it was not a factor.

james brooks, Monday, 9 March 2015 17:02 (nine years ago) link

that's all cool to know! thanks james. (and whoopsies on the rocnation bit...)

soyrev, Monday, 9 March 2015 17:05 (nine years ago) link

off by a year, she signed to rocnation in early 2014, this one is from early 2013...probably pre-Go

flappy bird (spazzmatazz), Monday, 9 March 2015 19:44 (nine years ago) link

I don't hate this song, but it has a whiff of "off-brand Kate Bush" about it

tyvm for clearing it up, james!

mh, Monday, 9 March 2015 20:23 (nine years ago) link

on twitter she seems quite surprised by all the positive reception this is getting so i hope that means that the album is even better because it's definitely one of the best things she's done

not so much "lost album" as "lost"/scrapped direction for her next album. also, the "go" thing, if actually a misconception, comes courtesy the press:

"Grimes said that the Visions follow-up she had been working on "sucked, so I threw it out and started again." The reaction to "Go"—which was originally written for Rihanna—helped dictate the change of pace. "It upsets a lot of my fans, and I get why it upsets them," she said. “Everybody was like, ‘Oh, Grimes is pandering to the radio.""
http://pitchfork.com/news/56680-grimes-scraps-new-album-sessions-after-negative-reaction-to-go-starts-again/

and from the NYT interview p4k is quoting:

"“It upsets a lot of my fans, and I get why it upsets them,” says Boucher of the big, booming track. “Everybody was like, ‘Oh, Grimes is pandering to the radio.’ ” But the failure, ultimately, was a productive one. By that point, she had already begun to hate the album she was working on..."

I think Grimes sounds really good filtered through a "pandering to the radio" box.
