WTF with Marc Maron (it's a podcast)

I've never really listened to many interviews with her though, so maybe that's par for the course. It just struck me that, during a WTF musician interview, it was the guest making me more uncomfortable than Marc.

oh jesus I forgot the "smash and grab" bullshit, you're right, that was nuts

Brio2, Tuesday, 9 December 2014 14:48 (nine years ago) link

I love how people are talking about Maron's growing musical appreciation like he's a teen in their extended family instead of a middle aged celebrity

da croupier, Tuesday, 9 December 2014 14:51 (nine years ago) link

*only teens are allowed to grow their appreciation of music**

i blow goat farts, aka garts for a living (waterface), Tuesday, 9 December 2014 14:55 (nine years ago) link

a teen in their extended family

this feels more accurate actually.

i was on the 'have to listen to every episode' train for a long time but haven't felt like listening in awhile. there are enough good podcasts now that were inspired by his model but feel fresher (probably because they have better taste in music and haven't run for hundreds of episodes).

festival culture (Jordan), Tuesday, 9 December 2014 15:01 (nine years ago) link

What are some other good ones Jordan? I need a couple of new podcasts.

Brio2, Tuesday, 9 December 2014 15:05 (nine years ago) link

here's what i've been listening to in the car:

-The Wandering Wolf (Yoni Wolf from Why?'s podcast, i don't think enjoyment is contingent on knowing or liking his music, although he does talk to Anticon-related dudes from time to time.)

-Secret Skin (Open Mike Eagle's podcast, interviews are mostly rappers and comedians so far)

-Kinda Neat (L.A.-based, lots of rappers and producers)

-No Effects (conversations with musicians hosted by one of the dudes from Tanlines, he's sort of dry but in a way that reminds me of myself)

-The Champs

Then there are a couple other ones that I listen to at work, for some reason it's easier to work to shows that have regular co-hosts rather than an interview format. Dapwell & Lakutis (from Das Racist) have one that's pretty funny.

festival culture (Jordan), Tuesday, 9 December 2014 15:26 (nine years ago) link

I was excited about the Mike Eagle show, but I tried to listen to the episode with Milo and the sound quality was so bad (like sub-Shots Fired level) that I could barely make out what they were saying.

I like the W. Kamau Bell and Kevin Avery podcast about Denzel

that was the worst one sound-wise, the others are better (but still not, uh, great).

RAP GAME SHANI DAVIS (Raymond Cummings), Thursday, 11 December 2014 12:08 (nine years ago) link

Turns out that Jenny Slate, Maron, and I all had the same experience growing up with maths

RAP GAME SHANI DAVIS (Raymond Cummings), Thursday, 11 December 2014 12:20 (nine years ago) link

except they probably called it math

ancient texts, things that can't be pre-dated (President Keyes), Thursday, 11 December 2014 15:49 (nine years ago) link

It's weird. I've heard Jenny Slate interviewed a bunch of times and always liked her, but after hearing her WTF I'm thinking things like, "oh yeah, your life is so awesome that you need to escape it by smoking out 24/7." Maybe I'm hearing her through Maron's 12-steppin' ears tho.

I think I maybe listened to the Louis episode(s) before, but if I did it's been so long that hearing them talk today sounds fresh.

Johnny Fever, Monday, 15 December 2014 19:00 (nine years ago) link

i love the stuff about the blue trumpet & his crazy amex purchases

difficult-difficult lemon-difficult (VegemiteGrrl), Monday, 15 December 2014 19:32 (nine years ago) link

Those Louie interviews are so great, I can revisit them every couple months and enjoy them just as much,

the trumpet story is so wonderful

Is it just me or is Marc being extra gross and dickish on this St. Vincent podcast?

EZ Snappin, Tuesday, 16 December 2014 20:26 (nine years ago) link

I felt like when she said "fuckable" Maron took it as an invitation to talk about sex

ancient texts, things that can't be pre-dated (President Keyes), Tuesday, 16 December 2014 20:28 (nine years ago) link

Everything about this is kinda yuck.

EZ Snappin, Tuesday, 16 December 2014 20:29 (nine years ago) link

Kept thinking he was going to tell her he wanted to kiss her a-la Joe Namath to Suzy Kolber.

I generally find Adam Goldberg insufferable, but am really digging this interview.

I've heard Jenny Slate interviewed a bunch of times and always liked her, but after hearing her WTF I'm thinking things like, "oh yeah, your life is so awesome that you need to escape it by smoking out 24/7."

i enjoyed this one (first one i've listened to in a minute) but had the same thought for sure.

ha :/

looking forward to Adam Goldberg because i kinda love Adam Goldberg.

adam goldberg is one of my biggest crushes, so excited

difficult-difficult lemon-difficult (VegemiteGrrl), Thursday, 18 December 2014 23:04 (nine years ago) link

(You guys make me feel like a freak for being annoyed by Goldberg. Turns out that hearing him talk is far preferable to watching him talk, for me anyway.)

The Melissa Etheridge one today is also really good, something special happens (usually) when Maron throws down with people his age.

RAP GAME SHANI DAVIS (Raymond Cummings), Monday, 22 December 2014 11:55 (nine years ago) link

Maron really oversold the emotional tug of this interview in his intro. I appreciate the things M.E. has been through, but this was really just a good chat.

Johnny Fever, Monday, 22 December 2014 17:55 (nine years ago) link

i think he just liked the lyrics of that song

Holy fuck, I'm getting choked up at this Goldberg interview. I had no idea he was friends with Michael Dahlquist and those guys.

stillborn baby gutted me. i have been following him on instagram for a long time, and he had posted about a crib or something around when the baby was due i think?...and then he was radio silence for a few months, i figured just bcz of having a kid, never thought anymore of it
so fucking sad & awful
hopeful for his new little one, but god how scary a second time around

but for realz follow him on ig, he takes beautiful haunting photos

people who miss this show being especially combative and bitter will find a TON to love in today's episode

RAP GAME SHANI DAVIS (Raymond Cummings), Monday, 29 December 2014 13:31 (nine years ago) link

Oh man, I bet. Nash seems tailor-made to irritate Maron. He irritates me, tbh.

In the end they find some common ground, but it's rocky going at times.

RAP GAME SHANI DAVIS (Raymond Cummings), Monday, 29 December 2014 14:03 (nine years ago) link

Man. I kind of want Maron and Nash to do a quarterly podcast together. They're both sort of sociopathic to each other, but they also have the courage to call each other out about their personality defects.

It was kind of telling when Nash was talking about his father's need to always redirect the topic of conversation towards himself and his problems (and how they were just as bad or worse) and Maron butting in to talk about himself and how his father did the same thing (to just as bad a degree... or worse).

I'd forgotten how much I kinda hated "Magnolia," but wonder if I'd feel differently about it if I returned to it now.

RAP GAME SHANI DAVIS (Raymond Cummings), Monday, 5 January 2015 13:51 (nine years ago) link

This interview with the Playboy interviewer guy was like Maron's version of that TPM article where all of the writer's questions were a variation of "Why didn't Iggy Azalea give Charli XCX a shout-out on "Fancy"?"

The Tim Conway drivers license story is cracking me up when I envision the events actually taking place.

I like Marc interviewing directors.

loved the Jason Nash and PTA interviews (for completely opposite reasons).

the Ricky Jay "never the less..." anecdote is the one that's been killing me.

PTA seems cool

everyday sheeple (Michael B), Thursday, 8 January 2015 17:39 (nine years ago) link

I just got to the little diversion at the end where they tacked on a talk about records. It's basically the same convo Marc has had with 50 other people, but I love the jubilation he experiences when he encounters another people who listens to the same things he likes.

pelvic slang (GOTT PUNCH II HAWKWINDZ), Thursday, 8 January 2015 22:38 (nine years ago) link

The key to my continuing enjoyment of Linklater's films is to ignore him as a person. He used to pimp Alex Jones bullshit and was passing out 9/11 Truther docs on the set of one of his movies.
