Ikebe Shakedown - Stone by Stone

works in a zone similar to the Orlando Julius album

Klara Lewis - Ett

That Orlando Julius album is totally rad. I think the Heliocentrics are becoming one of my favorite bands.

I made a Spotify mix of my favorite tracks of the year.

The mix is a little over two hours; I tried to make a cohesive mix to be listened to from beginning to end, rather than ranked. It seems unfair to try to rank something like the New Pornographers’ ebullient hooks against, say, Porya Hatami’s serene ambient.

1. Steve Moore: Logotone (actually from late 2013)
2. Spoon: Rent I Pay
3. The New Pornographers: War on the East Coast
4. Temples: Shelter Song
5. Ryan Teague: Remote Outliers
6. White Rainbow: Killswitch
7. Actress: Rule
8. Angel Olsen: Unfucktheworld
9. The New Mendicants: Sarasota
10. The War on Drugs: Red Eye
11. Hospitality: Last Words
12. Marissa Nadler: Firecrakers
13. Rebekka Karijord: Madrigal
14. A Winged Victory for the Sullen: Atomos VII
15. Sharon Van Etten: Your Love is Killing Me
16. Porya Hatami: After the Rain
17. Majical Cloudz: Your Eyes
18. Future Islands: Seasons (Waiting on You)
19. Wye Oak: Before
20. Fennesz: Bécs
21. Koen Holtkamp: Between Visible Things
22. Beck: Waking Light
23. Woods: Moving to the Left
24. The Growlers: Big Toe
25. Hamilton Leithauser: I Retired
26. Karen Gwyer: You Big
27. Hundred Waters: Murmurs
28. Orcas: Sela

Lydia Ainsworth - Right From Real

have been really enjoying this record today. like a cross between austra and owen pallett in a kate bush kind of way

Yeah, it's good. First heard "Malachite" when it was posted on some thread or another (shambala?), that's still the track that stands out for me.

I've probably posted this at least once upthread, but here are my tracks and albums Spotify playlists.

Oh, and I hadn't noticed there was a new Koen Holtkamp album, thanks for the pointer pwgp!

death in Skegness (seandalai), Sunday, 7 December 2014 21:46 (nine years ago) link

Etienne Jaumet's La Viste just found me last night, and it's massive and beautiful.

Johnny Fever, Sunday, 7 December 2014 21:49 (nine years ago) link

The Koen Holtkamp album is very good! Came out in the late spring I think, plus a bonus disc of previously vinyl-only stuff.

And re Karen Gwyer - she did two EPs this year, both better than her album from last year.

Anyone who likes the ambient stuff in my list, do check Porya Hatami. He made three albums this year, all good.

sctttnnnt (pgwp), Sunday, 7 December 2014 22:34 (nine years ago) link

seandalai: there was a ltd vinyl only koen holtkamp album (motion) that came out this year, but also a comp (motion: connected works) that included both that and also just about all his other solo stuff as well, with the exclusion of the first album (field rituals)

ha xp

sosmix klopp (NickB), Sunday, 7 December 2014 22:37 (nine years ago) link

the jo johnson album would make a good fit with the holtkamp and gwyer if you haven't heard that yet pgwp.

will check the hatami, that's a new name for me

sosmix klopp (NickB), Sunday, 7 December 2014 22:41 (nine years ago) link

Thanks xps - I love Field Rituals (and all the Mountains stuff) but kind of lost track of him for a while.

good list! have never heard of karijord though - who's she?

Ottbot jr (NickB), Thursday, 11 December 2014 18:06 (nine years ago) link

I came across her via a column in Drowned in Sound, and I've basically never seen any other reference to her anywhere. The album is on Spotify.

She is from Finland (or was it Norway?). I might be mistaken but I believe her earlier material is more songwriter-oriented. This album is all piano, strings, voice. It can seem very "small" and fragmented on first listen but also there is some mystery to it. I kept coming back to it all year because I felt like I hadn't fully unlocked everything. It became more and more compelling as I listened to it. I'm hesitant to draw comparisons but, very broadly speaking, if you are a fan of Julia Holter or Juliana Barwick, you'll probably find something to enjoy in this album. She doesn't exactly sound like those artists but she is similarly abstract.
