i think there is a point that the imagery that this is compared to is american imagery, and many of these things are compared to US history that isnt necessarily taught in other countries, ie many people may be unaware of such things. the gollywogs make this argument more difficult, though i think many young people are now unaware that gollywogs ever existed, seeing as how british cultural memory is about 15 minutes long

I understand the issue you are getting at, yes, I do, but it's not the one I'm having to argue against. My argument is that the bottle-opener thread, an innocent thread, was ruined by over-reacting individuals, whose over-reaction I felt it necessary to check. Then the personal shit started flying, then the accusations of 'implicit racism' arose, then I was fighting a losing battle for my dignity when I should have just walked away. Thanks, ILX.

you could make the argument that britain is more racist because it hasnt worked through issues and is still insensitive to them, you could make thte argument it is less racist because it has forgotten about them

a fairly big deal was made in the UK of Big Ron's n-bomb, the remarks made about Henry, the black Barca players threatening to leave the field following monkey chants, the recent treatment of Jason Scotland, etc. I think Britain still has a shit load to work through and I don't think as a nation we're insensitive to racist imagery. I just feel that in this case the connection to what is mainly American imagery isn't clear cut and easy to make for some of us - particularly those of us who enjoy footballers being ridiculed as a cultural staple. That may make us ignorant, but not wilfully so.

Actually I don't think the intention of the manufacturer is 100% relevant here. Lots of people make racist comments who would be horrified to be thought of as racist.
