Are Migos the Thelonious Monk of nu-rap?

I made a rough draft of a checklist of characteristics the Thelonious Monk of rap would have:

1. Other rappers and critics think they can't rap, but they're actually very technically gifted. Their early works attest to the fact that they can rap straight.

2. Has a hard-to-detect sense of irony in the formal aspects of their performance rather than simply in the text of their lyrics.

3. Subverts rhythm and flow in off-kilter, sometimes subtle ways.

4. Melodically inventive.

5. A handful of well-regarded verses and hooks are "borrowed" from others or otherwise have a murky provenance.

I'm open to revisions and additions.

I don't get these dudes. I couldn't even finish listening to "Versace". I'm all for lyrical minimalism but when they do spit a line it just doesn't connect with me. It seems the young kids of today are into some seriously questionable stuff. Like Drake and J. Cole. To me it is corny and lightweight. But these are the artists capitalizing financially on the styles laid down by the true groundbreaker MC's. And these Migos guys jacked both Mac Dre and Ol' Dirty's fashion steaze. That's ok. It just ain't nothing new. I worry about this generation of kids. I am getting older but the stuff they like pretty much suuuckz. 11 million plus views for"Versace". Who the heck finds that song inspirational or groundbreaking? Riff Raff owns the use of "Versace" as an adjective, btw.

I don't want to overstate things or speculate too much about motivations, but talking about rap in this way almost feels like some kind of "respectability politics", ya know? Do Migos need to be brought "up" from one level to another?

You can plug anything into this schema. Like so:

etc.

I get that that can be done well or poorly, but it's resting on shaky ground- is my Rothko your Rothko? Do you mean "bright" or "simple" or "suicidal" or "focused" or "minimal" and so on.

you talkin' bout modern day rap but don't know the culture

its funny migos were the nu-rap whipping boys for a min when theyre obvs such traditionalists

having DJ Khaled on the opening track AND saying "culture album coming soon" (even if followed by 'another one' ad lib) on the first track makes this seem like the budget pre-album mixtape rather than the breakthrough studio album. bad marketing. kinda like chief keef with naming his follow-up to Finally Rich as if it was the third entry in a mixtape series
