I think they are, they are usually in shades, they remind me of Monk in how they rap.

And I just saw this youtube comment on one of their great vids, d'oh!

a lot of 'fun singles artists' type rappers have made full-length albums/mixtapes i enjoy but Migos mixtapes just become an endurance trial for me really quickly. especially the new one. that opening track at the top of the thread is 6 minutes for some reason, and it's like 8 tracks in before you get to anything that even resembles the kind of songs they're famous for.

I made a rough draft of a checklist of characteristics the Thelonious Monk of rap would have:

1. Other rappers and critics think they can't rap, but they're actually very technically gifted. Their early works attest to the fact that they can rap straight.

2. Has a hard-to-detect sense of irony in the formal aspects of their performance rather than simply in the text of their lyrics.

3. Subverts rhythm and flow in off-kilter, sometimes subtle ways.

4. Melodically inventive.

5. A handful of well-regarded verses and hooks are "borrowed" from others or otherwise have a murky provenance.

I'm open to revisions and additions.

Good points although I would disregard all the bit about lyrics as theyre the least important part of rapping and point 1 i disagree with as Monk wasn't technically gifted and that tells you all you need to know about the standard accepted qualia and of techincal gifts and the worth they have

Ok RT, I'll grant that he might not have been "technically gifted," as I put it, but I will say that he was "technically capable," and I know he had a fair amount of classical, formal, and informal training, which is more than can be said of others who were more outwardly pianistic, such as Hampton Hawes.

theres the same extremely obvious adlib in tshirt after "same color tshirt" and in call casting "white boys in the game call em andy milonakis" which is kinda dumb on its own but becomes funny in repetition WHITE

idg what the point of highlighting the ad libs is, from a music writer pov... 99% of the time they're just repeating the last or second last word
