We were actually in the room with birth mom - not during the delivery but soon after and spent part of the night and the next day with her and her girlfriend (long story). She had filed her intent to relinquish form which gave us a lot of access, and she wanted us to do the "parent stuff" as soon as possible.
We have a really close relationship with her now - she, her sister, mom, grandma, and great-grandma came to our rental house the day after she was released to see him and sort of come to terms with it, and she came and held him and we all cried yesterday after her rights were terminated before we drove the 75 miles home. I'm actually older than her mother so she sort feels like our daughter in a weird way now.
