JULIA SWEENEY BITCHES

RAP GAME SHANI DAVIS (Raymond Cummings), Monday, 24 November 2014 13:34 (nine years ago) link

Julia Sweeney seems like such a fun person to be around.

Johnny Fever, Monday, 24 November 2014 21:50 (nine years ago) link

I haven't been listening for a month or so and am catching up--what's with all these "hey look, so and so dropped by to lug their new shit for 20 minutes" openings? Mankind, Sporkful guy, Paulie Shore, guy from Community

I don't know, I'm kind of getting tired of 90-100 minute WTF episodes. I can't take that much Maron. Having said that, I'd be happy with more Mankind appearance in general, dude is so great.

It's a source of income that's preferable to the eight millionth Stamps dot com ad read imo.

Johnny Fever, Thursday, 4 December 2014 16:15 (nine years ago) link

I've never heard a 20 minutes Stamps.com ad

ancient texts, things that can't be pre-dated (President Keyes), Thursday, 4 December 2014 16:17 (nine years ago) link

I fast forward past all that shit

In the Rhett Miller interview, he mentions that his parents continued supporting him while he was a struggling comedian and I lost all possibly sympathy for his bitching about his parents.

Kiarostami bag (milo z), Thursday, 4 December 2014 16:18 (nine years ago) link

That's just my own bias. I hate Stamps.com.

Johnny Fever, Thursday, 4 December 2014 16:18 (nine years ago) link

better stamps.com than the adam & eve ads. i don't need to hear marc talking about vibrating things i can put inside myself or my partner while i walk to work, cheers.

bizarro gazzara, Thursday, 4 December 2014 16:47 (nine years ago) link

The whole exchange between Rhett and Marc about the suicide attempt was pretty funny, paraphrasing obvs:

Rhett: Yeah, it's not something I like to talk about a lot.

Marc: So how'd you do it?

WTF Podcast Intro Poll

Brio2, Thursday, 4 December 2014 16:53 (nine years ago) link

the intro to the Chrissie Hynde episode (with Maron screaming about coffee and nicotine) is very skippable

ancient texts, things that can't be pre-dated (President Keyes), Thursday, 4 December 2014 17:00 (nine years ago) link

Gaffigan's visit before Martin Starr was fantastic as always.

dan selzer, Thursday, 4 December 2014 17:50 (nine years ago) link

so this podcast is now officially sandwiched between 2 guitar center maron jamgasms, huh?

$0.00 Butter sauce only. No marinara. (Sufjan Grafton), Monday, 8 December 2014 20:59 (nine years ago) link

Is the chrissy Hyde interview a good listen?

how's life, Monday, 8 December 2014 21:27 (nine years ago) link

It wasn't the most comfortable interview I've ever heard, and I couldn't tell if it was because Marc was too eager or if Chrissie had an agenda, but I kind of didn't enjoy it. Also, they found a way to bash disco for a little bit, so fuck'em both.

Johnny Fever, Monday, 8 December 2014 21:29 (nine years ago) link

All I could think listening to the Hynde interview was, "jeesh, and people thing Jann Wenner is an old rockist asshole". Does Chrissie always come across as such a close-minded traditionalist? Or was she having an off day? Her choice of words during the whole disco thing was a little eyebrow-raising too.

ƋППṍӮɨ∏ğڵșěᶉᶇдM℮ (jon /via/ chi 2.0), Monday, 8 December 2014 21:37 (nine years ago) link

I thought Maron was the one bashing disco mostly, she was trying to talk about reggae. He was also angling to bash punk as being "all about the fashion" but she ignored it. He really is the most textbook rockist tube amp dude ever.

Brio2, Monday, 8 December 2014 21:44 (nine years ago) link

I don't think he knows what he is, because I still see him posting his record buying results on twitter and he's getting into a lot of varied and different stuff. Old habits die hard, though.

Johnny Fever, Monday, 8 December 2014 21:46 (nine years ago) link

He's been trying to get into hip-hop lately. Shouldn't be too long until he declares the Roots are the best at it.

polyphonic, Monday, 8 December 2014 21:49 (nine years ago) link

he's been posting about the box of black metal a friend sent him. Apparently he's pretty into it.

EZ Snappin, Monday, 8 December 2014 21:50 (nine years ago) link

To that end, I would love to hear him interview Questlove.

Johnny Fever, Monday, 8 December 2014 21:50 (nine years ago) link

I thought Maron was the one bashing disco mostly, she was trying to talk about reggae.

Maybe I misconstrued what she was saying, not about to go back for another listen, but when she was talking about how African-American music, post reggae, gained this "smash and grab" mentality and leaving out spirituality, I thought it was a little icky sounding.

ƋППṍӮɨ∏ğڵșěᶉᶇдM℮ (jon /via/ chi 2.0), Monday, 8 December 2014 22:00 (nine years ago) link

Yeah, it was that phrase exactly that made me go o_O

Johnny Fever, Monday, 8 December 2014 22:01 (nine years ago) link

ew.

how's life, Monday, 8 December 2014 23:39 (nine years ago) link

I've never really listened to many interviews with her though, so maybe that's par for the course. It just struck me that, during a WTF musician interview, it was the guest making me more uncomfortable than Marc.

oh jesus I forgot the "smash and grab" bullshit, you're right, that was nuts

Brio2, Tuesday, 9 December 2014 14:48 (nine years ago) link

I love how people are talking about Maron's growing musical appreciation like he's a teen in their extended family instead of a middle aged celebrity

da croupier, Tuesday, 9 December 2014 14:51 (nine years ago) link

*only teens are allowed to grow their appreciation of music**

i blow goat farts, aka garts for a living (waterface), Tuesday, 9 December 2014 14:55 (nine years ago) link

a teen in their extended family

this feels more accurate actually.

i was on the 'have to listen to every episode' train for a long time but haven't felt like listening in awhile. there are enough good podcasts now that were inspired by his model but feel fresher (probably because they have better taste in music and haven't run for hundreds of episodes).

festival culture (Jordan), Tuesday, 9 December 2014 15:01 (nine years ago) link

What are some other good ones Jordan? I need a couple of new podcasts.

Brio2, Tuesday, 9 December 2014 15:05 (nine years ago) link

here's what i've been listening to in the car:

-The Wandering Wolf (Yoni Wolf from Why?'s podcast, i don't think enjoyment is contingent on knowing or liking his music, although he does talk to Anticon-related dudes from time to time.)

-Secret Skin (Open Mike Eagle's podcast, interviews are mostly rappers and comedians so far)

-Kinda Neat (L.A.-based, lots of rappers and producers)

-No Effects (conversations with musicians hosted by one of the dudes from Tanlines, he's sort of dry but in a way that reminds me of myself)

-The Champs

Then there are a couple other ones that I listen to at work, for some reason it's easier to work to shows that have regular co-hosts rather than an interview format. Dapwell & Lakutis (from Das Racist) have one that's pretty funny.

festival culture (Jordan), Tuesday, 9 December 2014 15:26 (nine years ago) link

I was excited about the Mike Eagle show, but I tried to listen to the episode with Milo and the sound quality was so bad (like sub-Shots Fired level) that I could barely make out what they were saying.

I like the W. Kamau Bell and Kevin Avery podcast about Denzel

ancient texts, things that can't be pre-dated (President Keyes), Tuesday, 9 December 2014 15:45 (nine years ago) link

that was the worst one sound-wise, the others are better (but still not, uh, great).

RAP GAME SHANI DAVIS (Raymond Cummings), Thursday, 11 December 2014 12:08 (nine years ago) link

Turns out that Jenny Slate, Maron, and I all had the same experience growing up with maths

RAP GAME SHANI DAVIS (Raymond Cummings), Thursday, 11 December 2014 12:20 (nine years ago) link

except they probably called it math

ancient texts, things that can't be pre-dated (President Keyes), Thursday, 11 December 2014 15:49 (nine years ago) link

It's weird. I've heard Jenny Slate interviewed a bunch of times and always liked her, but after hearing her WTF I'm thinking things like, "oh yeah, your life is so awesome that you need to escape it by smoking out 24/7." Maybe I'm hearing her through Maron's 12-steppin' ears tho.

ancient texts, things that can't be pre-dated (President Keyes), Saturday, 13 December 2014 02:53 (nine years ago) link

I think I maybe listened to the Louis episode(s) before, but if I did it's been so long that hearing them talk today sounds fresh.

Johnny Fever, Monday, 15 December 2014 19:00 (nine years ago) link

difficult-difficult lemon-difficult (VegemiteGrrl), Monday, 15 December 2014 19:32 (nine years ago) link

Those Louie interviews are so great, I can revisit them every couple months and enjoy them just as much,

RAP GAME SHANI DAVIS (Raymond Cummings), Tuesday, 16 December 2014 00:07 (nine years ago) link

the trumpet story is so wonderful

$80 is absurd and very ridiculous! (Sufjan Grafton), Tuesday, 16 December 2014 00:09 (nine years ago) link

Is it just me or is Marc being extra gross and dickish on this St. Vincent podcast?

EZ Snappin, Tuesday, 16 December 2014 20:26 (nine years ago) link

I felt like when she said "fuckable" Maron took it as an invitation to talk about sex

ancient texts, things that can't be pre-dated (President Keyes), Tuesday, 16 December 2014 20:28 (nine years ago) link

Everything about this is kinda yuck.

EZ Snappin, Tuesday, 16 December 2014 20:29 (nine years ago) link

Kept thinking he was going to tell her he wanted to kiss her a-la Joe Namath to Suzy Kolber.
