I paid $20 over, I guess? Not too worried about it, I haven't been buying bourbon much at all this year.

hi dan, what are you doing the next couple weekends? :D

jenny holzer, ilxor (mh), Thursday, 20 November 2014 04:22 (nine years ago) link

Looking at this bottle, petting it occasionally, waiting for 12/5 to crack it open.

dan m, Thursday, 20 November 2014 06:45 (nine years ago) link

Had a Yamazaki the other night after winning a football match 8-0. It was most fitting. Very peaty and flavoursome, without any sort of sweetened chemical flavour. Delicious.

speaking of pappy 12, anyone ever see weller 12 year? it's very very similar if not indistinguishable. used to be my jam til it disappeared. elijah craig 12 year is my affordable go-to these days, but tonight i'm sipping four roses single barrel which is delightful.

Captain Maximus, Friday, 21 November 2014 03:47 (nine years ago) link

haven't seen weller 12 in a few months now unfortunately

call all destroyer, Friday, 21 November 2014 03:48 (nine years ago) link

Van winkle 12 year/lot b is I believe just single barrel Weller 12. Technically not Pappy though. Weller 12 not gone, but all the "it's as good as Pappy" talk means it didn't linger when it shows up. That said, I haven't seen it for about a year, not long after someone tipped me it was going AWOL and I didn't believe him.

Josh in Chicago, Friday, 21 November 2014 04:55 (nine years ago) link

i don't even think lot b is single barrel, i think it's just the best barrels of 12 year old weller blended and bottled. the general shortage of older weller and the fact that they can divert the existing supply to the more desirable van winkle label means weller 12 is going to be an endangered species for quite a long time.

two weeks pass...

picked up a bottle of four roses limited edition single barrel 2014--pretty excited since the 2012 edition was possibly my favorite bourbon ever. the price has certainly gone up.

ryan, Monday, 8 December 2014 19:31 (nine years ago) link

I've had an easier time getting Pappy than any of the 4R limited editions.

Josh in Chicago, Monday, 8 December 2014 20:05 (nine years ago) link

I couldn't believe what I was seeing for a few seconds!

ryan, Monday, 8 December 2014 20:14 (nine years ago) link

I drank a whole bottle of this year's Booker's

valleys of your mind (mh), Monday, 8 December 2014 20:44 (nine years ago) link

I also picked up Hillrock's solera aged bourbon. it's quite interesting. a bit rough around the edges but I quite like it. excited to see what they'll be doing in 6 years or so.

Fuck a white whiskey.

Josh in Chicago, Thursday, 25 December 2014 03:30 (nine years ago) link

^^^

Drinking some scrounged Highland Park right now, it's not bad at all.

ticket to rmde (seandalai), Thursday, 25 December 2014 03:35 (nine years ago) link

isn't every bottom-shelf "whiskey" that was "aged" for 24 hours post-fermentation and then had caramel coloring added really a white whiskey

valleys of your mind (mh), Thursday, 25 December 2014 03:39 (nine years ago) link

"moonshine" aka cheap swill rushed to market as something else to avoid the aging process and start raking in dough with minimal effort.

Had some Booker's 25 last night, which was good enough that I wish I bought a bottle when I could.

Josh in Chicago, Thursday, 25 December 2014 19:26 (nine years ago) link

I tried the Dickel white whiskey in a bar because I was curious. It was alright but I don't think I'd buy it again.

Ah well. I'll certainly drink it.

(the link is not descriptive, it describes a new technology for reproducing the aging process of "brown spirits" in a much shorter timespan

20 years in 6 days

Bulleit 10 Year is... not all that impressive

However, buying it on clearance at Target for about fifty cents less than normal Bulleit is good!

Josh in Chicago, Wednesday, 18 November 2015 17:43 (eight years ago) link

pratt truss it (dan m), Wednesday, 18 November 2015 17:43 (eight years ago) link

I could do it, in theory, but that tweet is already 2 hours old, isn't it?

Josh in Chicago, Wednesday, 18 November 2015 17:47 (eight years ago) link

yeah, but they don't start until 6 and there's only one favorite so far

pratt truss it (dan m), Wednesday, 18 November 2015 17:51 (eight years ago) link

iirc last year I saw the tweet while I was in class, ended up making it down there about an hour later and they still had a couple bottles

they jack the prices up though

call all destroyer, Thursday, 4 February 2016 01:35 (eight years ago) link

my favorite kind is bourbon but rn i am drinking scotch

starkiller based god (Treeship), Thursday, 4 February 2016 01:39 (eight years ago) link

i'm trying to turn myself into a scotch person, there's so much more scotch to try and the bourbon scene is full of basic bottles and ripoffs these days

call all destroyer, Thursday, 4 February 2016 01:42 (eight years ago) link

imo the problem with scotch in north america (or bourbon abroad) is the import/scarcity price difference

μpright mammal (mh), Thursday, 4 February 2016 01:53 (eight years ago) link

i don't think i'll ever prefer scotch tbh, but it's good to mix it up.

this shit is my jam always and forever. i like how it is in a genie bottle. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Willett_Pot_Still_Reserve

My wife bought a pint of OGD BIB 100 with the intent of making hot toddies and the didn't drink it... It's been a while but it's still really good.

pratt truss it (dan m), Thursday, 4 February 2016 02:48 (eight years ago) link
