i don't mind seeing their shit i just want them to not see mine

You can add people to lists and then chose which list you send messages to. You'll still see them, they won't see you, unless you choose to show them.

I don't think it's as flexible as Google's circles, but I think it'll work.

ya but i don't want them seeing the stuff i like/comment on which fbook broadcasts to everyone whether you like it or not

Having been back on Facebook in the last 3 months purely for my own self promotional reasons work-wise, it's been useful in that respect.

But fuck damn there is still so much bumf and crap and pointless chatter on there from people I know, and it's embarrassing.

Only if the post youre liking/commenting on is public or "friends of friends", afaik.

And why anyone makes global posts I have no freaking idea.

Yeah, I get uncomfortable when I see some fb-generated update like

"[my old babysitter] replied to a comment on [her sister who I'm not even friends with]'s post!"

because that means I know that my father-in-law is getting updates like

"how's life is making jokes about cops with the commies from his high school ska band!"

Ha! This is definitely happening now. Obstreperous old coot has been commenting on posts by friends and friends-of-friends alike. This morning he was lecturing a Finnish friend of my father's about proper wood chopping techniques. Why am I still on this nightmare network?

what is the point of forcing users to crop all profile pics in a square?

To make everything standardized?

bumf and crap and pointless chatter are the Very Stuff of Life to a great many people and without it they would become sad, ghostly apparitions.

Mark G, Monday, 1 December 2014 18:52 (nine years ago) link

I mean, every site with an avatar has a standard size, right?

Now why square? Because it's the easiest shape to make for photos?

pplains, Monday, 1 December 2014 19:34 (nine years ago) link

but... facebook has "photo albums" as a key feature, and always has. your "profile photos" are in a photo album, it has worked this way forever

✓ out this insane nakh yall (gr8080), Monday, 1 December 2014 19:38 (nine years ago) link

But those photos in your photo albums are going to be used as an avatar on your front page or used whenever you post a comment on someone's page.

pplains, Monday, 1 December 2014 19:39 (nine years ago) link

aren't going to be used.

pplains, Monday, 1 December 2014 19:39 (nine years ago) link

and for years fb has had a function where you select what square-shaped area of the photo does get used, which worked just fine

✓ out this insane nakh yall (gr8080), Monday, 1 December 2014 19:41 (nine years ago) link

I used to fuck with the profile pic by making ones that were like 200 px wide and 30000 px long

Well, ok, that's a new one on me. I thought they still let you crop it.

thank your "friends"

Nhex, Monday, 29 December 2014 14:48 (nine years ago) link

I daresay. But you think it's just picked up on things they've commented, and deduced, or did face-control start asking my friends having got no joy out of me, and some pillock obligingly filled it in for them?

wat if lermontov hero of are time modern day (Bananaman Begins), Monday, 29 December 2014 15:42 (nine years ago) link

I cant remember but I thought you had to provide a dob when you signed up in first place (to acknowledge being older than the minimum age?)

saer, Monday, 29 December 2014 15:52 (nine years ago) link

saer is right. I did do a double take when I saw that, because it makes me think other ppl can see that, even though it wouldn't be too hard for my friends to put two and two together.

Mistah FAAB (sarahell), Monday, 29 December 2014 19:32 (nine years ago) link

Those times when you're sitting on your hands, trying to resist commenting on those people who USED TO BE liberal and who have become scarily conservative.

You added them because they were your dear friend in high school. Now you've got a bunch of liberal and left pages in your collection, and they're praying for Darrell Wilson.

Whitney Di-Ennial (I M Losted), Monday, 29 December 2014 20:14 (nine years ago) link

half the reason I never signed up for Facebook tbh

Nhex, Monday, 29 December 2014 20:18 (nine years ago) link

As Trayce has pointed out numerous times, you can unfollow these people without de-friending them. You have the power!

Mistah FAAB (sarahell), Monday, 29 December 2014 20:33 (nine years ago) link

Before I quit, Facebook taught me a valuable lesson in terms of showing me more than I wanted to know about various friends who used to be liberals when Bush was president and then became "liberals" during the Obama administration (i.e. silent on every new rightward lurch from their imaginary friends in DC; super-attentive to the latest dumb remark out of the mouths of the super-powerful Michelle Bachmann and Sarah Palin). Everyone their own partisan hack and not even getting paid for it.

Vic Perry, Monday, 29 December 2014 20:48 (nine years ago) link

That was their greatest failing as friends?

dumpster® fire (Aimless), Monday, 29 December 2014 21:25 (nine years ago) link

They're still friends. I quit Facebook because it is long term depressing.

Vic Perry, Monday, 29 December 2014 21:30 (nine years ago) link

I try not to "follow" them, but with h.s., grammar school etc. we're ALL friends with each other on FB.

It's just funny and probably awkward for them because there they are on FB with their conservative or religious friends, and then there is you, their best pal from tenth grade who smoked pot with them or who went to a punk concert or shoplifted or some other thing, and you wonder if their new friends know about how they used to be. Because some of these people on Facebook are unbelievably conservative, with stuff I never heard when growing up.

Whitney Di-Ennial (I M Losted), Monday, 29 December 2014 21:34 (nine years ago) link

However, I will say this: that if Facebook is the only thing holding this friendship together, it's kind of like if we pledged to only get together on the condition that we meet in the food court at a crappy mall, that we then have loud conversations for the benefit of all the other tables, show one another our photo albums, reference some internet thing to each other, and never talk in the way that made us friends in the first place. If those are the conditions, it's ok if we drift apart, really.

Vic Perry, Monday, 29 December 2014 21:49 (nine years ago) link

I quit facebook because i was wasting time on it (amongst other things) at work

Then i realized the facebook timesink was a symptom not a cause so i quit my job instead

I havent gone back on facebook, but i might

Definitely not when I joined, as for years it would ask me now and then to add my year of birth. Interested to know if they've been directly tapping up lamers among my friends for info.

is it connected to your gmail in any way? what happens if you forget or request new password?

saer, Monday, 29 December 2014 23:52 (nine years ago) link

Do you use WhatsApp? FB extracts the data from your WA contact list. And if it's not from your WA, it can even be from someone of your contacts usinbg WA, that has you as a contact in WA and has added your date of birth to their 'info about BananamanBegins'. For your contacts it's simply a reminder of what you birthday is (could be synched with the calendar), for FB it's enough for to put two and two together.

How are you supposed to feel when old friends post photos of themselves whooping it up on New Year's Eve in the city where you now live, and they know you do, but they haven't gotten in touch with you to tell you they're visiting?

forgeit it anagram, it's chinatown

Nhex, Saturday, 3 January 2015 23:01 (nine years ago) link

Whenever I see my friends whooping it up at a party I wasn't invited to I figure it's someone else's party, and I shouldn't expect my friend to wangle an invite for me (especially if it's at someone's house). As for not getting in touch at all, maybe they have so little time where you are that they couldn't fit anything in.
