Good lord, I never realized "Whale Meat" was a pun, I just thought it was a stupid album title.

― Prostetnic Vogon Limbaugh (Dan Peterson), Saturday, October 1, 2011 8:36 AM (3 years ago)

otm. Three years later, I only just got the pun today.

Ugh, just remembered Andrew Gold died super recently

He died a few years ago.

Um...idg whale meat

i did it all for the 'nuki (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Sunday, 23 November 2014 20:31 (nine years ago) link

whale meat again?

soref, Sunday, 23 November 2014 20:32 (nine years ago) link

Oh, I've just looked it up and realised that's what the album is actually called. but it's a pun on 'we'll meet again' isn't it? do ppl know that song in the US?

soref, Sunday, 23 November 2014 20:37 (nine years ago) link

The Byrds covered it on their first album.

Euripides' Trousers (Tom D.), Sunday, 23 November 2014 20:43 (nine years ago) link

I was wondering if it's best known through Dr Strangelove over there?

soref, Sunday, 23 November 2014 20:45 (nine years ago) link

That's where the Byrds heard it

brimstead, Sunday, 23 November 2014 20:49 (nine years ago) link

"Whale meat again" is the punch line of an ancient joke

why do I hate that thing (excluding imago, marcos) (wins), Sunday, 23 November 2014 20:52 (nine years ago) link

Xp Or maybe it was just its use in Dr Strangelove that inspired them to close the album with it.

brimstead, Sunday, 23 November 2014 20:52 (nine years ago) link

^^In the liner notes to the album there's a dedication to Kubrick, so yeah.

Steppenwolf "At Your Birthday Party." 1969, and making it in here solely on the strength of the quotation marks.

Man that band always looks like the biggest bunch of thugs

you say tomato/i say imago (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Sunday, 7 December 2014 23:09 (nine years ago) link

The song wasn't called "Born To Be Mild" (which would have been a great Rupert Holmes title born to this thread).

Doctor Casino, Friday, 12 December 2014 18:20 (nine years ago) link

i think that one tipped the scale for me, I really do want to buy every record in the thread and wallpaper a building with them.

Doctor Casino, Friday, 12 December 2014 18:21 (nine years ago) link

I've got my own building to build

Oh, so there's a copy of I've Got My Own Album To Do at my local alleyway shop, with a very flattering employee-pick sticker on it. The tracklist is pretty promising too. I think it was around eight bucks or I woulda just snapped it up. Is this actually a good album y/n?

Doctor Casino, Friday, 12 December 2014 18:42 (nine years ago) link

"Special thanks from the band to Cliff Richard"

Master of Treacle, Friday, 12 December 2014 20:39 (nine years ago) link

Great lineup of titles there too. "We Sure Do," "Not Afraid to Rock 'n' Roll"...

Doctor Casino, Friday, 12 December 2014 20:55 (nine years ago) link

The connection to Cliff Richard is that this Garth Hewitt guy was a sort of Christian rocker, though the thing is really messing with my head is that Bryn Haworth plays on the album too and I thought HE was Garth Hewitt (and vice versa).

Root It Oot (Tom D.), Friday, 12 December 2014 20:58 (nine years ago) link

Oh, hold on, it gets worse, I just checked Bryn Haworth on wiki and he's a Christian too.

Root It Oot (Tom D.), Friday, 12 December 2014 21:01 (nine years ago) link

I came across this one yesterday and thought of this thread.

Yeah this seems rubbish when the Chameleons do it imo

better the 70s stalwart.

Master of Treacle, Tuesday, 16 December 2014 11:01 (nine years ago) link

that wasn't the chameleons first offence either...

I have consciously avoided ever hearing that band because of their album titles.

I'm more likely to listen to a Cardiacs album tbh.

None of these seem egregiously of this thread, but given how superfluous a Phil Everly solo career already seems to me, they're kinda tickling me.

These are terrible enough to rate inclusion. I certainly almost choked on my lunch.
