not really sure where to put this, nor can remember if it's been discussed:

http://www.newrepublic.com/article/120450/sabrina-rubin-erdelys-uva-gang-rape-reporting-raises-questions

not too surprising that it's become an article of faith on the right that the whole thing is made up

i'm not really up for discussing this myself

Jeffrey Wells, he has opinions and more opinions about Amy Schumer's appearance and the concept of "Schlumpies & Dumpies"

I grew up in a world in which conventionally attractive or semi-attractive people used to be the ones who got laid the most often. Trust me — I used to do quite well at the Westport Players Tavern in the mid to late ’70s, and I had a good sense of what worked and what didn’t.

Well, yeah.

I really, really hope her Apatow movie bombs so we aren't faced with the prospect of seeing her forced into 10 movies a year for the next decade.

jeffrey wells is a 2015 tastemaker whose findings have been derived from self-serving memories of his heyday as a flannel-shirt-wearing wolf frequenting the westport players tavern in the mid to late '70s.

estela, Thursday, 12 February 2015 23:44 (nine years ago) link

there was some other segment on Inside Amy Schumer where she was doing street interviews and made some asian guys = small dicks joke, I don't see it online tho

there's tons of this stuff in her material and unlike w Sarah Silverman, the jokes aren't about how racist she's being, they're about how real and funny racial stereotypes are. which, when they're being perpetuated by a white woman, they aren't.

The irony of all of Wells's dumbshit kvetching is that Apatow, who is one of those "schlumpies & dumpies" is married to Leslie Mann, who is a stone-cold fox.

Οὖτις Δαυ & τηε Κνιγητσ (Phil D.), Friday, 13 February 2015 20:03 (nine years ago) link

Rogen's wife is a looker as well.

In the comments on the second Wells piece, a reader points out that he isn't being sexist because he's being equally critical about less attractive male stars. Which is all well and good, but (A) It started with a less than enlightened set of comments he made about Schumer, and (B) if this isn't as a whole defined as 'sexist', the shoe certainly fits for 'shallow' to the degree that a sample spoon from Baskin Robbins is at a Grand Canyon-level of depth in comparison to Mr. Wells.

Don A Henley And Get Over It (C. Grisso/McCain), Friday, 13 February 2015 20:41 (nine years ago) link

Yeah, that.

Also, isn't/wasn't Schumer dating Anthony Jeselnik? I mean, he's no Jeff Wells but

just watched the second episode of Amy Schumer's show. she has funny skits that I'd like to keep watching, but it came to a crash with the end bit where she talks about how she used to date primarily Hispanic men and was hence into nonconsensual sex... followed by the "hey, everyone's been a little raped" routine. just thinking oh for fuck's sake, you're one of those, sigh

Relatively small potatoes in the scheme of things, but for some reason, despite the obvious demographics of the collector fanbase, Star Wars licensees still insist on gendering toys and limiting the number of female characthers. When called on it, Hasbro answers in remarkably stupid fashion: http://toybox.io9.com/hasbro-flounders-when-asked-about-the-lack-of-female-st-1686572897

two weeks pass...

Recently, the CEO of our company hosted a webinar with a business partner of ours, in which she led a roundtable discussion with seven women who are the CEOs of PR companies. We had a blog post up promoting the event, and today I found a comment that was in the "pending queue," from a man who heads up a PR consulting operation. His comment was:

Wow! Is this someone’s idea of workplace diversity? Apparently there aren’t any guys running successful PR shops.
(Please save your flames and address the questions)

In 2015. Just a few days after a report was published noting that, among S&P 1500 companies, there are more CEOs named John or David than there are women, total.

Holy fuck those Jeffrey Wells blogs.... In what universe are Lena Dunham or Amy Schumer not "conventionally attractive"? Wells totally comes across as one of those whiny dudes who idolize "pickup artists" and fret over how alpha they are. In actuality, his every word oozes self-pity, lack of confidence, and general social ineptness - all the while spectacularly unaware that his unpopularity with women stems from his behavior and beliefs, not his looks.

I still can't believe I read this. http://jezebel.com/elementary-school-newsletter-shows-different-curriculum-1731540209

A newsletter sent to parents of grade school students in Texas showed very different curricula scheduled for the boys and girls. During a monthly class with the guidance counselor at Borchardt Elementary School, boys in the fourth and fifth grade would be learning about subjects pertaining to “college and career exploration.” What lessons were scheduled for the girls? “Girl Talk,” with subjects like “Confidence—How do we get it and can we have too much?” and “How to form lasting friendships.”

For real? Am I missing something here, that you can read that piece, all about the harassment and abuse this woman has been facing, and your main takeaway and point of discussion is the title "Fart Party"? You don't think that's a bit of an odd priority?

Dröhn Rock (Branwell with an N), Wednesday, 7 October 2015 06:35 (eight years ago) link

I don't think that's anyone's main takeaway and point of discussion (though of course as Shakey says sometimes an article can be great and not lead to much discussion)?
