Mosquitoes don't like Skrillex:

Dieng et al, 2019. The electronic song “Scary Monsters and Nice Sprites” reduces host attack and mating success in the dengue vector Aedes aegypti. Acta tropica, 194, pp.93-99.

So, new album. Should I ?

at the very least check out "tears" ft. joker & sleepnet

la vie wokisme (voodoo chili), Friday, 17 February 2023 23:43 (one year ago) link

missy track is excellent

ꙮ (map), Friday, 17 February 2023 23:50 (one year ago) link

no physical options yet !?
and yeah, the joker track shakes walls.
also, loving the ukg album closer.
apparently, this is the first album of two this year ?

mark e, Friday, 17 February 2023 23:52 (one year ago) link

I caved in. Ratata and Tears are great!

✖✖✖ (Moka), Friday, 17 February 2023 23:59 (one year ago) link

Afaik there’s a second album coming either tomorrow or next week

✖✖✖ (Moka), Saturday, 18 February 2023 00:06 (one year ago) link

i was so late to the 'skrillex is good' train

ꙮ (map), Saturday, 18 February 2023 02:54 (one year ago) link

I think he got good when he started producing for other people. I hated when he was making brostep.

✖✖✖ (Moka), Saturday, 18 February 2023 03:19 (one year ago) link

he's an amazing house producer imo

ꙮ (map), Saturday, 18 February 2023 03:23 (one year ago) link

his dubstep flavors are also wild as shit and hold up well i think

ꙮ (map), Saturday, 18 February 2023 03:24 (one year ago) link

I was mainly speaking when he started, he got good fast he learned and started absorbing a lot of tricks from other producers. He’s highly professional imho.

✖✖✖ (Moka), Saturday, 18 February 2023 03:40 (one year ago) link

Also it helped that he was very young when he started.

✖✖✖ (Moka), Saturday, 18 February 2023 03:41 (one year ago) link

best thing here is "too bizarre (juked)"

this four-hour b2b set with Fred again.. and Four Tet (shot from behind the decks) is incredibly fun

more crankable (sic), Saturday, 18 February 2023 17:55 (one year ago) link

earlier i saw a clip on twitter of four tet dropping a beast at a random time in his set,
and fred again just laughing his socks off while was keiran grinning from ear to ear.
i am loving seeing the three of them having an absolute blast together.

mark e, Saturday, 18 February 2023 18:29 (one year ago) link

i saw someone snark about fred again being a rich twat on twitter but don't know what that's about

if you're in this company i'm not shocked if you're a little rich and twattish sort of comes with the territory afaict

ꙮ (map), Saturday, 18 February 2023 18:31 (one year ago) link

speaking of fred again, does anyone fuck with his new album? i bought a few tracks but can't say i've cottoned on to them, a little too subdued and saccharine for my needs.

ꙮ (map), Saturday, 18 February 2023 18:33 (one year ago) link

FA has some serious heritage :

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fred_Again

no idea re his own stuff.
yet.

mark e, Saturday, 18 February 2023 18:48 (one year ago) link

i liked fred's 2020 album a good bit more than his recent album, but my fav thing he's ever done is the 'gang' ep he made with headie one

la vie wokisme (voodoo chili), Saturday, 18 February 2023 18:59 (one year ago) link

sorry by his 2020 album i mean 'actual life (april 14-december 17, 2020)' which released in 2021

la vie wokisme (voodoo chili), Saturday, 18 February 2023 19:00 (one year ago) link

I dont like fred again creatively at all, it feels very MOR

xheugy eddy (D-40), Saturday, 18 February 2023 19:12 (one year ago) link

like you know that feeling where you're surrounded by ppl getting something and its not hitting you emotionally at all, but it seems to hit everyone else ? thats how I feel listening to him. like skrillex, even when I was unsure if I totally 'got it' still made me 'feel things'

xheugy eddy (D-40), Saturday, 18 February 2023 19:12 (one year ago) link

still the best speaker testing track ever

second album is out now

la vie wokisme (voodoo chili), Sunday, 19 February 2023 03:31 (one year ago) link

Too much skrillex and I’m too old for it so I’ll have to find a time and mood to listen to this but from what I sampled 3AM sounded good.

✖✖✖ (Moka), Sunday, 19 February 2023 05:41 (one year ago) link

I still haven’t heard them completely but I assume this is more the “pop radio” album?

✖✖✖ (Moka), Sunday, 19 February 2023 05:44 (one year ago) link

yeah it is

the garagey half is the better half

ufo, Sunday, 19 February 2023 06:12 (one year ago) link

So the algorithm is of course spying on me and recommended me this youtube of skrillex, diplo and bieber breaking down “where are u now” and it’s very interesting, particularly hearing Skrillex’s process:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1mY5FNRh0h4

✖✖✖ (Moka), Sunday, 19 February 2023 18:51 (one year ago) link

second album is very pop, albeit via the skrillex production.
i love his garage stuff.
also, pretty sure that 'dont get too close' is a take on lil dicky.
there is a song in one of the episodes where lil dicky is showing his g/f re autotune/vocals,
and its totally the same as this skrillex track.

mark e, Sunday, 19 February 2023 19:39 (one year ago) link

skrillex / ty dolla sign song always worked really well for me

xheugy eddy (D-40), Tuesday, 21 February 2023 00:05 (one year ago) link

I don't necessarily agree with the premises and there are a lot of institutional biases baked in here, but I thought this was an interesting read for background on how you end up with a critical consensus and a skrillex-shaped hole in coverage

that substack article : someone has a massive chip on their shoulder, and hates fun.

for all the chaos re skrillex, he makes grooves that is fun.
my eldest lad has always been properly into the dubstep scene,
goes to nights that are all about 140 and knows stuff.
he saw a skrillex dj set a few years back and loved every minute of it.
'it was all massive drops and brostep, but damn, he has skills' is how he put it.

in other news : looks like there will be physical options for the new albums

mark e, Wednesday, 22 February 2023 20:09 (one year ago) link

that was kind of my take as well

mh, Wednesday, 22 February 2023 20:11 (one year ago) link

oh, and i realise this is not exactly the same,

but this was the lil dicky thing i was on about

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GF14wUr4GKE

i.e. the minimal to'ing and fro'ing between them both and the use of autotune ..

mark e, Wednesday, 22 February 2023 20:22 (one year ago) link

crap,
i posted a version that has a long speech in the middle that the original tv show didn't.

mark e, Wednesday, 22 February 2023 20:25 (one year ago) link

I think you're probably right, same 'playing around with saying stuff through auto-tune over a pretty backing track' vibe.

change display name (Jordan), Wednesday, 22 February 2023 20:33 (one year ago) link

First time Skrillex listener. Trying Quest for Fire rn. These "songs" are awfully short. There are a lot of ideas packed into a few minutes, and the pace can feel frenetic. Would be nice to let some of these tracks breathe a bit.

Indexed, Thursday, 23 February 2023 23:07 (one year ago) link

skrillex is machine tooled for party kids who need something new to happen at least every four measures. tiesto has been doing shorter club tracks with charli xcx, black eyed peas, etc., on the same tip. i used to grumble about this trend because i love getting lost in a groove and because sometimes i need an extra minute or two to find what to play next, but the lack of dead time in these sub-3-minute blasts really helps when you're trying to energize a dance floor.

I've had "Butterflies" with Four Tet constantly on repeat since it dropped.

holy crap - just saw some recent photos of Sonny Moore and he looks way different since he's cut his hair. Looks almost like Shia LeBeouf and it's freakin me out

https://www.billboard.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/01/Skrillex-2022-cr-Marilyn-Hue-billboard-1548.jpg

octobeard, Sunday, 26 February 2023 04:55 (one year ago) link

in the video I posted you can see he still has the same hair, it's just tied back

incidentally I bet the clip mark e mentioned is after 38:00 in this video of the three of them DJing in a bus in Times Square

least said, sergio mendes (sic), Sunday, 26 February 2023 19:03 (one year ago) link

Ah yeah I see that now, but perhaps it's the facial hair and coupled with him tying it back now. Also the eyes are strikingly similar too - and this was obscured by Sonny's previous use of the thick rimmed glasses. Apparently Shia has long hair too now?

octobeard, Sunday, 26 February 2023 21:52 (one year ago) link

His DJ presence is just so different now with this look than back in the day when his boyish looks with his hair down exuded this enthusiasm and giddiness. I guess I'm just expressing a personal bias against his current look, as it reminds me of someone who is way douchier, which is shitty, so I'll shuffle off now...

octobeard, Sunday, 26 February 2023 21:56 (one year ago) link

his boyish looks with his hair down exuded this enthusiasm

he's 35 years old, grinning, jumping up & down and dancing on top of the decks in his shorts, waving and cheering his collaborators, doing call-and-response moves with the crowd... plenty of boyish enthusiasm on display imo :)
