The late Vincent Crane, Kevin Rowland was smart (or crazy) enough to hire him to play with Dexy's Midnight Runners.

Atomic Rooster are actually pretty good - they went through a number of stylistic shifts over the years as members came and went. There was a good 2CD set called Heavy Soul that gathered pretty much all anybody would ever need.

Death Walks Behind You is a seriously good album in my humble opinion. By far the best line-up of Atomic Rooster as well, for me. There was an Atomic Rooster spin-off band called Hard Stuff too, but I can hardly recommend 'em.

iirc, and it's quite possible that I don't, Hard Stuff were on that proto-metal list skot did for Decibel years ago

nah I was wrong. sound quite promising tho tbh. first album looks commendably bargain bin-y

they must be pretty interesting, then

Think of a boring band from the 70s.
Look up their discography.
There will be at least one of these.

めんどくさかった (Matt #2), Wednesday, 5 November 2014 00:04 (nine years ago) link

not sure if/how they're represented above cos the covers aren't searchable text - but:
Al Kooper and George Clinton to thread!

top picks: Act Like Nothing's Wrong and You Shouldn't-Nuf Bit Fish

I thought I had a pretty deep and wide knowledge of 70s crap but this thread just keeps turning up more and more of it.

can't find the bands-in-front-of-brick-walls thread so i'll post it here...

i have no words for that btw, pretty much the worst of the good old 70s though

Ought to mention that the follow up to that was called So...Where's the Show? which is so this thread it hurts

This thread is one more reason never to doubt the reasoning behind the Eagles' success again.

Tucky Buzzard's immortal 'Warm Slash' has already appeared upthread, but this one is pretty good as well: 'Alright on the Night' (not 'knight' for some reason)

sorry, didn't realise that would be so big. it has a touch of the 'busy/claustrophobic caricature movie poster' about it as well imo

Apparently, Liz Damon's Orient Express had a 1979 album called Warning: This Album Could be Hazardous to Your Ego! but I haven't been able to find an image yet...

Doctor Casino, Wednesday, 5 November 2014 22:17 (nine years ago) link

thought I'd seen that real to reel pun somewhere else:

Real to Reel may refer to:
Real to Reel (Marillion album)
Real to Reel (Starcastle album)
Real to Reel (Tesla album)
Real to Reel (soundtrack), the soundtrack from the film Sound City

john wahey (NickB), Wednesday, 5 November 2014 23:07 (nine years ago) link

Love did an album with that title as well.

Don A Henley And Get Over It (C. Grisso/McCain), Wednesday, 5 November 2014 23:09 (nine years ago) link

Starcastle was a progressive rock band from Champaign, Illinois, which formed in 1969. They received extensive airplay and frequently played in the St. Louis area. The lineup included Terry Luttrell who was vocalist with REO Speedwagon *closes tab*

john wahey (NickB), Wednesday, 5 November 2014 23:11 (nine years ago) link

hahahaha

Doctor Casino, Wednesday, 5 November 2014 23:14 (nine years ago) link

Sadly, of those bands, only Marillion and Tesla actually adorn their covers with reel-related imagery. Mr. Stookey (the former Paul of Peter, Paul and Mary) actually seems really confused since he's not even near a source of electricity. How is the real going to reach the reels?

Doctor Casino, Wednesday, 5 November 2014 23:16 (nine years ago) link

Oh no, wait, there's one on the Love cover too, my bad.

Doctor Casino, Wednesday, 5 November 2014 23:17 (nine years ago) link

ah, I thought old Stookey looked familiar

East of Eden - Here We Go Again...

john wahey (NickB), Wednesday, 5 November 2014 23:43 (nine years ago) link

At least the cartoon strip took some work and would give you something to look at for a few minutes of the bus ride home from the record store, which is more than can be said for most of these "bad photo with one-liner title" covers. But by the standards of record-cover comic strips it is still darned lazy and cheap-looking.

xpost "No Training Gear To Be Left Dressing" would also be good.

Doctor Casino, Wednesday, 5 November 2014 23:46 (nine years ago) link

here we go again... is just about the laziest title ever. one of those guys in east of eden played the violin on baba o'riley iirc. could even be the guy with his hand down his trousers?

john wahey (NickB), Wednesday, 5 November 2014 23:51 (nine years ago) link

he definitely looks like he's having a fiddle down there imo

john wahey (NickB), Wednesday, 5 November 2014 23:52 (nine years ago) link

[Starcastle lead singer Terry] Luttrell has said he co-wrote the classic REO song "Golden Country" with Richrath before he left the band in 1972. Richrath is listed as the sole writer of the song, and vehemently denies that Luttrell was a co-writer. The subject matter of Golden Country is actually one of the main issues that led to Luttrell being let go from the band. Luttrell thought that Gary Richrath was writing songs that were too politically motivated, and wanted to focus on less controversial material. One night, the differences between Luttrell and REO Speedwagon came to a head. REO Speedwagon had a gig that was a significant drive from their home in Champaign, Illinois. During the performance, Terry became agitated and refused to continue singing. The band was forced to quit the set and cut the show short. This angered the club owner, and he refused to pay the band for performing. On the drive back, Richrath began an argument with Luttrell over costing the band the performance money. Richrath, and the rest of the band, were extremely upset because the money that they had would be spent on gas getting home, and they would be completely broke. Luttrell became upset and became combative. Richrath ordered that the car be pulled over so he could fight Luttrell. When the car stopped, Luttrell fled into a corn field. Richrath suggested out of anger that they just drive away and leave Luttrell to find his own way home. Surprisingly, no one in the band disagreed, and they drove off leaving him in the field. No one within the band talked to him after that. It was one of the most unique firings of a front man in Rock n' Roll history.

mattresslessness, Thursday, 6 November 2014 00:29 (nine years ago) link

what are these politically motivated REO Speedwagon songs, I wonder

Οὖτις, Thursday, 6 November 2014 00:31 (nine years ago) link

omg, that story

Doctor Casino, Thursday, 6 November 2014 00:31 (nine years ago) link

"Keep On Lovin' You" is Richrath's defense of Trotsky's theory of permanent revolution.
