Stylus as coke spoon is nice touch

There Goes Ryan's Scion (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Sunday, 2 November 2014 23:51 (nine years ago) link

a separate thread, but i'm guessing that quotes as titles -- eg "give us a wink!" -- are universally terrible?

mookieproof, Sunday, 2 November 2014 23:54 (nine years ago) link

three things:

that BLT album seems from the lineup like it could be really good..... anyone heard it?

Bunk Dogger cover really is superb

You Bought It You Name It might be the crystalized essence of H70sATLIGMOATD......

Goddo have been wrongfully absent from this thread:

This album had a couple of covers, both really gross in their own different ways...

... did that work?

R. Stornoway (Tom D.), Monday, 3 November 2014 13:50 (nine years ago) link

"Who Are Thoes Guys?" is perfect, though if it had quotation marks or a pointless bit of emphasis (a la Commander Cody) it'd pretty much have the genre locked up.

Doctor Casino, Monday, 3 November 2014 14:22 (nine years ago) link

Doesn't belong on this thread because (I think) this is some sort of post punk thing, but for years I thought had imagined this album title but there it is, large as life.

R. Stornoway (Tom D.), Monday, 3 November 2014 15:53 (nine years ago) link

Atomic Rooster, I haven't heard that but the stuff I have is fucking awesome. like super doomy proto metal organ rock

We should listen to these and report back.

i was thinking about a listening club for these albums (at least ones that are on spotify)

There Goes Ryan's Scion (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Monday, 3 November 2014 16:36 (nine years ago) link

there is no way the music on that atomic rooster album could possibly live up to the gatefold image.......

m0stlyClean, Monday, 3 November 2014 18:58 (nine years ago) link

Atomic Rooster's drummer was Ric Parnell, aka Spinal Tap's Mick Shrimpton. Based on that cover, he presumably also worked as a consultant on the film.

Montgomery Burns' Jazz (Tarfumes The Escape Goat), Monday, 3 November 2014 19:23 (nine years ago) link

hahaha:

"The first question they asked was, 'What do you think about a movie that's going to tear your career apart?' I said, 'You should have made this movie about 10 years ago.' They then asked me what other bands I'd been in, and I said, 'Well, I was in a band called Atomic Rooster.' They looked at each other and said, 'Yep, that's it, you're our man.' "

Montgomery Burns' Jazz (Tarfumes The Escape Goat), Monday, 3 November 2014 19:24 (nine years ago) link

the go-to Atomic Rooster is Death Walks Behind You

they are some of the ppl from Crazy World of Arthur Brown, Vincent Crane the leader was a real character to say the least

There Goes Ryan's Scion (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Monday, 3 November 2014 19:39 (nine years ago) link

The late Vincent Crane, Kevin Rowland was smart (or crazy) enough to hire him to play with Dexy's Midnight Runners.

R. Stornoway (Tom D.), Monday, 3 November 2014 19:44 (nine years ago) link

holy shit why didn't i know that!

those must have been some tours

There Goes Ryan's Scion (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Monday, 3 November 2014 19:49 (nine years ago) link

Atomic Rooster are actually pretty good - they went through a number of stylistic shifts over the years as members came and went. There was a good 2CD set called Heavy Soul that gathered pretty much all anybody would ever need.

Humorist (horse) (誤訳侮辱), Monday, 3 November 2014 20:09 (nine years ago) link

Death Walks Behind You is a seriously good album in my humble opinion. By far the best line-up of Atomic Rooster as well, for me. There was an Atomic Rooster spin-off band called Hard Stuff too, but I can hardly recommend 'em.

Welcome To (Turrican), Monday, 3 November 2014 20:23 (nine years ago) link

iirc, and it's quite possible that I don't, Hard Stuff were on that proto-metal list skot did for Decibel years ago

well-behaved wingmen really hate Mystery (DJ Mencap), Monday, 3 November 2014 21:15 (nine years ago) link

nah I was wrong. sound quite promising tho tbh. first album looks commendably bargain bin-y

well-behaved wingmen really hate Mystery (DJ Mencap), Monday, 3 November 2014 21:21 (nine years ago) link

they must be pretty interesting, then

Doctor Casino, Wednesday, 5 November 2014 00:02 (nine years ago) link

Think of a boring band from the 70s.
Look up their discography.
There will be at least one of these.

めんどくさかった (Matt #2), Wednesday, 5 November 2014 00:04 (nine years ago) link

not sure if/how they're represented above cos the covers aren't searchable text - but:
Al Kooper and George Clinton to thread!

top picks: Act Like Nothing's Wrong and You Shouldn't-Nuf Bit Fish

yeah, i keep thinking about making a master list (aka future shopping wish-list)

but yeah, matt #2's method has served me a couple of times here

Great image - that Blues Image album on a turntable. I have to check that one out!

I thought I had a pretty deep and wide knowledge of 70s crap but this thread just keeps turning up more and more of it.

can't find the bands-in-front-of-brick-walls thread so i'll post it here...
