I'm loving my 6+ but it feels like a whole different category of thing from my 5s - it's much more like a baby iPad. In fact, I haven't touched my iPad since I got it.

I might have big enough hands or something? idk. It's definitely a bit too slippy, and trying to take photos one-handed I've just discovered can be a bit awkward. Battery life's amazing, though.

my new case, if the screen cracks you get a free banana

droit au butt (Euler), Sunday, 2 November 2014 20:14 (nine years ago) link

Pretty sure there are very few, if any cases that will protect against a screen crack/shatter. I don't assume protection with my case, I just need it because the phone is so slippery.

― Jeff, Sunday, 2 November 2014 20:12 (7 minutes ago) Permalink

Well I would think if it just protruded a bit beyond the screen it would prevent the screen from making direct contact with the pavement (although not a sharp rock). Downside is that that makes the phone uglier and less comfortable to use. But the fact that it only fell like 3-4 feet and shattered, I would think there are cases that could at least have prevented that.

Imagine if Steve jobs had had giant hands - we could have had an iPhone 6 from the beginning

xps yeah, i always use super cheapo bendy plastic cases, and they protect from falls

Nhex, Sunday, 2 November 2014 22:09 (nine years ago) link

I have the Apple leather case for my 6plus and so far so good, I am an inveterate dropper of phones. I do need to get an otterbox or similar for biking.

Beats was bought by Apple, and they expressed direct interest in me designing some products with them. I can't go into details, but I feel like I'm in a unique position where I could be of benefit to them. That does mean some compromises in terms of how much brain power goes toward music and creating. This is very creative work that's not directly making music, but it's around music.

So, recommend me a good case that provides at least some drop protection without being hueg?

my jaw left (Hurting 2), Monday, 3 November 2014 20:46 (nine years ago) link

I like the Tech21 ones, but they aren't that small... I had a smaller one, but dropping it on a corner broke the screen anyway. I've dropped my phones a few times with the Tech21 cases, and they haven't broken.

schwantz, Monday, 3 November 2014 21:07 (nine years ago) link

They just have to make phones that don't break at the slightest bit of contact. What do we have 3 smashed iphone 6s so fat on the thread? Even the 5c, which is relatively robust, why not just make the case project a mm around the glass so you don't need a case?

I am honestly assuming y'all just clumsy and old

Nhex, Monday, 3 November 2014 23:01 (nine years ago) link

Bearing in mind I have dropped my phones a million times and a cheapo $1 case from eBay is always good enough

Nhex, Monday, 3 November 2014 23:02 (nine years ago) link

I like Speck's PixelSkin cases. They're slightly rubbery on the outside so they don't fall out of my hand or slide around much - feels like you're holding some ultra-expensive multimeter/tricorder.

i have a four year old macbook with 2 gb of ram-should i fuck with yosemite? how about mavericks? i have snow leopard and it runs fine, i don't really push it.

slam dunk, Tuesday, 4 November 2014 05:29 (nine years ago) link

I like these cases b/c they have a hard shell around a soft shell but they're not bulky. Should've gotten one when I first got my new phone.

I have a 5 y.o. MBP maxed out to 8GB of RAM and Yosemite has really taken its toll in terms of memory usage.

licorice oratorio (baaderonixx), Tuesday, 4 November 2014 14:25 (nine years ago) link

It's a mixed bag, because some things are much better on memory and the code to intelligently swap dormant applications out of memory works well. On the other hand, if you're on the threshold where you are almost-maxing your memory usage but are still comfortable, you're going to end up pausing to load dormant apps when you swap around.

⌘-B (mh), Tuesday, 4 November 2014 14:54 (nine years ago) link

Spotlight is kind of a dog in Yosemite
But going from Mavericks to Yosemite, feels like the newer OS has better integration of all the iCloud/iPhone stuff that Mavericks introduced, like taking calls/texts on your Mac. You might as well skip Mavericks if you're going to upgrade

Nhex, Tuesday, 4 November 2014 15:12 (nine years ago) link

you're not going to do all that stuff on a 2010 computer, though

⌘-B (mh), Tuesday, 4 November 2014 15:12 (nine years ago) link

FWIW, looks like my credit card is going to cover the iPhone repair because it was within 90 days.

I ordered a Tech21 case bc it was the one the Apple Store dude recommended and my wife made fun of me for being "vain" and trying to get a case that was so slim it didn't do anything, and I'm not gonna have her make fun of me again.

my jaw left (Hurting 2), Tuesday, 4 November 2014 15:14 (nine years ago) link

oh shiiit I didn't think about the credit card possibility

⌘-B (mh), Tuesday, 4 November 2014 15:17 (nine years ago) link

, Tuesday, 4 November 2014 15:18 (nine years ago) link

I bought a Retina iMac btw and even with the maxed out graphix mission control can get laggy

Don't think Yosemite is that optimized yet

, Tuesday, 4 November 2014 15:18 (nine years ago) link

oh wait, I'm an idiot, I bought the phone from a friend because he got a deal from his carrier

⌘-B (mh), Tuesday, 4 November 2014 15:19 (nine years ago) link

Yeah Amex. Bigups to apple store guy for suggesting I should check into it.

my jaw left (Hurting 2), Tuesday, 4 November 2014 15:23 (nine years ago) link

My MacBook got ridiculously faster when I upgraded to an SSD.

schwantz, Tuesday, 4 November 2014 16:47 (nine years ago) link

Apple Store seemed overtaxed as FUUUK fwiw, waited almost an hour after my "appointment" time to see someone, then phone wasn't ready yet 1.5 hours after they said. Somehow their staff/store atmosphere/mind control techniques prevented me from feeling all that steamed about it.

my jaw left (Hurting 2), Tuesday, 4 November 2014 16:51 (nine years ago) link

reality distortion field, brother

Finally got to use Apple Pay today, it actually was about as awesome as paying for something could be.

three weeks pass...

Anodyne consumer question for a short-sighted person. I have a 4S with i0s 5.1.1 -- I'm thinking of ditching it finally because of battery and speaker terribleness, and also I need to keep up-to-date on tech things so I can (gah) pitch ideas at work.

Really though the only thing I use it for is reading Kindle and Instapaper - what's the 6 like for reading? Sometimes I find high-contrast retina screens blinky and difficult to focus on. How's the 6 compared to the 4S? There is a slight dullness to the 4S screen (it could be three years of pocket dirt) that makes it slightly easier to read. But I could be imagining that.

This is our gift to you.
But it can never compare to what you've given.

What does it take to give a gift?
It takes thoughtfulness. Compassion.
And sometimes, sacrifice of your time,
your talent, and your heart,

These are the gifts you give:
kindness, knowledge, humor, and patience.
You give them when you cover for a teammate,
so they can go on a much-deserved break.
When you send an email recognizing a job
well done. Or when you grab an extra coffee
for a friend before you clock in.

You give these gifts whether it's the beginning
of the season, or the end of a very long day.
You do it over, and over, and over again.

Amazing products are designed in Cupertino.
Amazing moments are made by you.
These moments are your gift this
holiday season -- to your customers,
to your team, and to the world.

Thank you.
