> Agreed. My disco poll had 50 track ballots, and even those were a whole lot of work to tally.

54 ballots would have been so much more apt....

What is going on with the Yo La Tengo poll?

Van Horn Street, Saturday, 1 November 2014 21:59 (nine years ago) link

next canada day

mookieproof, Saturday, 1 November 2014 22:00 (nine years ago) link

clemenza claimed them, but only has a tiny window every year to run a poll, and this year's window snuck past everybody -- i.e., me and clemenza.

Pict in a blanket (WilliamC), Saturday, 1 November 2014 22:13 (nine years ago) link

I can do it in the second of half november, if you guys don't mind.

Van Horn Street, Saturday, 1 November 2014 22:37 (nine years ago) link

That'll be clemenza's call.

There's also the EOY voting hiatus -- crap, have we been doing these things long enough to call it the "traditional" hiatus?

Pict in a blanket (WilliamC), Saturday, 1 November 2014 23:54 (nine years ago) link

stoked for the italo poll.

example (crüt), Sunday, 2 November 2014 03:22 (nine years ago) link

I'm looking forward to it for the education -- I have no idea what the hell italo is.

Pict in a blanket (WilliamC), Sunday, 2 November 2014 12:35 (nine years ago) link

VHS: I was kind of looking forward to using a specific idea I had for Yo La Tengo images...mookieproof was going to help. If you really want to do it and there's no one able to do anything else, I guess you could take it over, but check with mookieproof first. I'll send you my image idea--it's something I know you'd get.

clemenza, Sunday, 2 November 2014 13:13 (nine years ago) link

Got the images, that's a very good idea, you guys should do it!

Van Horn Street, Sunday, 2 November 2014 15:50 (nine years ago) link

Suggestion: you and mookieproof run the poll whenever you can jump in there. Ballots, tabulation, threads, etc. I can do all the images in the next 2-3 weeks, leaving space for the song titles to be added later. Once you have results, I could fill in the titles in a night.

clemenza, Sunday, 2 November 2014 15:58 (nine years ago) link

For what it's worth: getting the images ready is a lot easier than I expected--knocked off four in about 15 minutes. So if you guys are okay with me handling that end of it, quite happy to end the rest over whenever there's an opening.

clemenza, Sunday, 2 November 2014 16:42 (nine years ago) link

YLT's catalogue is rather huge, should we get nominations? That's my only question now, I can handle the thread and counting process, clem has the images (can mookie can lend a hand?).

Van Horn Street, Sunday, 2 November 2014 21:23 (nine years ago) link

Don't see why there should be nominations -- their discography is their discography is their discography. The pollrunner can decide whether to include Dump, Condo Fucks, the album w/Jad Fair, etc... everybody else can get on board or shut up, right?

Pict in a blanket (WilliamC), Sunday, 2 November 2014 21:43 (nine years ago) link

Ok that is what I thought, it's just that they have other, what 250 songs? I was afraid some people would ask for nominations because of that. I'm the asking type.

Van Horn Street, Sunday, 2 November 2014 21:47 (nine years ago) link

I wasn't going to bother with nominations, for the same reason WC gives; their discography is pretty straightforward and easily searchable online. I was going to include side projects, but you and mookie decide. I vote for them anyway whenever I want to--I'd have a couple of Dump songs for sure--it doesn't really matter to me whether those votes means anything or not. (In almost all cases, they won't.)

clemenza, Sunday, 2 November 2014 21:58 (nine years ago) link

I means what I say.

clemenza, Sunday, 2 November 2014 21:58 (nine years ago) link

Noms threads are generally for genre polls with fuzzy edges -- disco, Classic Rock, etc. Not usually needed for single-artist polls.

VHS, you're new-ish to ILM? Usually these polls take a breather while the poll-friendly among us vote on the year in review in December and those results roll out in January, then the artist polls pick back up in late Jan/early Feb. I'd say we've got time for P-Funk and one more (Spacemen 3 I presume) before the break.

Pict in a blanket (WilliamC), Sunday, 2 November 2014 22:11 (nine years ago) link

Yeah I'm familiar with the process, already signed up for the DFA records poll in a while.

Van Horn Street, Sunday, 2 November 2014 22:34 (nine years ago) link

Im also new-ish, indeed.

Van Horn Street, Sunday, 2 November 2014 22:35 (nine years ago) link

already signed up for the DFA records poll in a while

Oh yeah, that's right, sorry -- I'm deep in the weeds at work today and forgot about that.

Pict in a blanket (WilliamC), Sunday, 2 November 2014 22:59 (nine years ago) link

i can do whatever for ylt, but i've never run a poll before

my instinct would be to exclude dump and double dynamite; condo fucks and jad fair collaborations seem like fair game but tbf i'll sniff at votes for them

sub-poll for favorite covers might be cool, as they've done so many

mookieproof, Sunday, 2 November 2014 23:45 (nine years ago) link

I had an hour free and I was toying with the idea of making something like this for the Stereolab poll. I don't know if it would look to repetitive after seeing it 50 times with different color variations, though. What do you guys think?

Those look amazing, Moka.

emil.y, Tuesday, 4 November 2014 22:50 (nine years ago) link

Looks great, but even with a template it's gotta be labor intensive for each one.

Johnny Fever, Tuesday, 4 November 2014 22:50 (nine years ago) link

Thanks!

Well, I can make a set of color templates for each album (like shades of orange for Margerine eclipse, shades of green and blue for Dots and Loops as seen above) and it becomes quite easy to modify. Just change text here and there and you're ready to go. I'd waste more time looking for images to accompany each song than with a template to be honest.

Moka, Tuesday, 4 November 2014 22:54 (nine years ago) link

Got it.

Johnny Fever, Tuesday, 4 November 2014 22:55 (nine years ago) link

The Miles and Eno rollouts were kinda flat soda because I mess with Photoshop all day in my day job and never feel like putting images together for the polls, but I need to get past that. Y'all have been making the poll results really look good lately with the pictures.

those images really remind me of the spines of most of the jg ballard books i have

Moka, I will be looking forward to the poll just for the images in two years!

Big Orange Machine (Leee), Tuesday, 4 November 2014 23:35 (nine years ago) link

And maybe I will have listened to Cobra by then.

Thanks everybody!

― john wahey (NickB),

Hahaha I googled out of curiosity and the comparison is otm. I didn't draw direct inspiration from them, though. I was looking at several medical and product packaging from the 60s and that was the overall aesthetic at the time.

me too. i can volunteer to help with poll stuff (tabulating or image graphic selection/photoshop-ing) after the first week of december, (if the poll hasn't been run by then). just an offer.

i don't know if it's been hashed out yet, but to what extent should non-italian artists be exluded. a lot of borderline stuff i'm not too sure about. like, i want to vote for "moskow diskow" maybe even some british stuff like human league or early depeche mode (not to mention blue monday, which is really more of a cold steely proto-NRG jam i guess. and what about timespan limits? these are all questions that would be very fun to discuss, for my obsessive ass anyway.
at the very least it'll result in a repost on one of the "look at what that dumb fuck said" noize/afl threads. Kind of leaning towards keeping it purist and italian, i think.

brimstead, Tuesday, 25 November 2014 01:32 (nine years ago) link

I expect these polls to go on for awhile, but just a word of warning, I'm less than a month away from leaving the country until 2015. Metallica's not going to sneak up on us, right?

pplains, Tuesday, 25 November 2014 03:35 (nine years ago) link

After the Funkadelic poll, there might be time for the Italo poll to run its course before we kick off the end-of-year nominations/voting/rollout.

Right now, I'm thinking Saturday 13 December will be a good day to start the nominating thread. As we've done the last several years, noms will probably go on for three weeks, then voting for two, then one week of tracks rollout and one week of albums rollout.

Rough schedule of the eoy poll process as of right now:

Dec 13 - nominating opens
Jan 3 - nominating closes, voting opens
Jan 16 - voting closes
Jan 19 - tracks rollout
Jan 26 - albums rollout

Johnny Fever, Tuesday, 25 November 2014 03:43 (nine years ago) link

I'll start the nominations/voting thread for the italo poll tomorrow (i.e. later today). I'm leaning towards restricting the number eligible tracks, but not imposing any constraints into what counts as italo. I think the criteria is too subjective and there are definitely tracks that I consider fit in perfectly without being by italian artists. That being said I'll give some general guidelines. And thank you, brimstead, I might take you up on your offer.
