you guys are all wrong

caek, Wednesday, 18 March 2009 03:37 (fifteen years ago) link

why

HHooHHHooHH-oob (harbl), Wednesday, 18 March 2009 11:15 (fifteen years ago) link

u guys people do not burn calories srsly - calories are a measure of how things catch on fire - the human body is not a fire and is subject to all sorts of weird metabolic quirks - how much energy someone expends doing a particular exercise has to do w/not only what theyre doing but all sorts of other variables particular to the person - what sort of shape theyre in what their metabolism is like what sort of exercise theyre used to what they ate that morning etc

anyway speaking as someone who has run and walked a lot this whole running is just as good as walking assertion just seems like bullshit on the face of it

ice cr?m, Wednesday, 18 March 2009 13:27 (fifteen years ago) link

no one said running "is just as good as" walking silly

thats a concise insightful summery of their argument

ice cr?m, Wednesday, 18 March 2009 13:33 (fifteen years ago) link

i think u meant "summary"

rip dom passantino 3/5/09 never forget (max), Wednesday, 18 March 2009 13:34 (fifteen years ago) link

"summery" is an adjective that means of or pertaining to summer

rip dom passantino 3/5/09 never forget (max), Wednesday, 18 March 2009 13:34 (fifteen years ago) link

u can never fully understand what i mean because my thoughts are too deep

ice cr?m, Wednesday, 18 March 2009 13:35 (fifteen years ago) link

but yes summer is a good time for running or walking

ice cr?m, Wednesday, 18 March 2009 13:35 (fifteen years ago) link

sigh

Uh, I meant to say that slow poke McGee was doing a 15-minute mile up there, not a 5-minute mile. If McGee was doing a 5-minute mile he'd be Yippidadee McGee, not a slow poke.

you don't have to be an astronomer or astrologist or astronaut or whatever to get this though--it's hs-level physics and i don't think it involves windmills either. but whatever!

basically this idea what work is a function only of distance moved is fine if there's no friction or heat or whatever. the problem is none of those assumptions are even remotely justified when you've got a human body involved (i am an expert on the human body, ladies). all you can say with HS physics is that running and walking in an imaginary world where human bodies have no joints and are infinitely small uses the same energy (although how you'd actually move in this world without friction is another matter).

caek, Wednesday, 18 March 2009 15:44 (fifteen years ago) link

moving in a frictionless world:

yes i am talking about an imaginary world though!!!!

oh cool!

caek is this the science talk reason why gargamel could never catch the smurfs???? ps the smurfs moved by kinda windmilling their little feet u can see this discussed in peer-reviewed journal youtube.com pretty sure

Finally someone addresses the 800 pound gorilla Smurf question!

I f'd up the word rear (Z S), Wednesday, 18 March 2009 15:56 (fifteen years ago) link

yes lamp. that is pretty much the reason. the smurf's moved using newton's 3rd law in their frictionless world.

also, keeping it positive, i saw this photo just as Jane by Jefferson Star came on and i liked it so i'm posting it here:

BEST Nirvana Song

I have to be very unoriginal here and say "Smells Like Teen Spirit". Really, there is something very special about that song, and there was a reason why it singlehandedly brought "alternative" music out into the mainstream.

Although "Tiny Godess" was surely a good call too :)

Nirvana - The original C/D?

I always tend to tell those "In Utero"/"Nevermind" fans that the best two Nirvana albums were called "The Story Of Simon Simopath" and "All Of Us"
