I think a stepback jumper is a pretty good outcome esp if they tried to put someone bigger on the ball (like MJ on AI)
There are three elements I consider 1) elegance of the move 2) reaction of the defender 3) outcome (made shot or layup or w/e)
In this latest gif only 2) is present and it's pretty exaggerated
Hence the low score

I weigh 1) pretty heavily which is why I don't like Kyrie his handle is ungly imo
― 龜, Friday, 24 October 2014 02:55 (nine years ago) link
the reason guys end up taking jumpers is often the crossover itself puts the ball handler way off balance and unable to drive to the hoop, you could say they

crossed themselves over

yah i only posted it because cunningham died and is in heaven b/c of the crossover

stepback j is basically a shot anyone can get any time
Maybe but for example Steph is very good at this and he's always perfectly balanced after the cross xp
― 龜, Friday, 24 October 2014 02:57 (nine years ago) link
I think good handlers don't drive after the cross because they are afraid of the shotblocker (unless you're AI)
― 龜, Friday, 24 October 2014 02:58 (nine years ago) link
Help defense is really good in the NBA these days too
good elements i can agree to those. making the shot def important
― Mathew Klickbait (Spottie), Friday, 24 October 2014 02:59 (nine years ago) link
steph is different cause stepbacks are good shots for him
― lag∞n, Friday, 24 October 2014 02:59 (nine years ago) link
In conclusion all I want of a good cross is for the move to be beautiful
― 龜, Friday, 24 October 2014 02:59 (nine years ago) link
bledsoe gets a really really wide open three there, he just missed it, he is mortal
― Clay, Friday, 24 October 2014 02:59 (nine years ago) link
one of my favs didn't result in a stumble but resulted in stepping into a spot where he could get the shot uphttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yIkhwc5YZfw
― Mathew Klickbait (Spottie), Friday, 24 October 2014 03:00 (nine years ago) link
its a wide open three but its a harder shot than a catch a shoot wide open three or even a wide open pull up three

Yeah Steph has my favorite handle in the league rn

hah GP's teeth out smile is so great, love that reaction
― Mathew Klickbait (Spottie), Friday, 24 October 2014 03:04 (nine years ago) link
stephs handle is very good but what makes it look great is that you have to guard his shot so tightly, like his ball skills arent in the same conversation as chris pauls
― lag∞n, Friday, 24 October 2014 03:04 (nine years ago) link
Yeah obv if you have to play a guy tight like Steph to protect the shot you're gonna get shook

CP3 actually kinda reminds me of Nash in the way that he can just sort of maintain a very steady speed w/ the ball while changing direction
― 龜, Friday, 24 October 2014 03:09 (nine years ago) link
yeah paul and nash (rip) are on another level imho just like psychologically they understand how to control the defense w their dribble
― lag∞n, Friday, 24 October 2014 03:11 (nine years ago) link
Yeah Nash never had a sprint like Rose but he never had to go slow either so in the average he was very fast
― 龜, Friday, 24 October 2014 03:12 (nine years ago) link
timmy hardaway has at least five in here that are 8.5/10https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=V0HRPIu02Xo
― Mathew Klickbait (Spottie), Friday, 24 October 2014 03:13 (nine years ago) link
Rose has an okay handle but if you give him an inch he turns on the jets
― 龜, Friday, 24 October 2014 03:13 (nine years ago) link
The UTEP two step is like my 2nd favorite move all time (after AI's cross)
yeah hardaways the crossover og xp
― lag∞n, Friday, 24 October 2014 03:14 (nine years ago) link
nash could just work the court and get to whatever position he wanted in the key and then everyone else would either cut or find an open spot outside the arc

Well my #1 crossover of all time (like a lot of folks) is AI on MJ which led to a stepback jumper

rose kinda sloppy with the handle but yeah the first step is (was) unreal
― Mathew Klickbait (Spottie), Friday, 24 October 2014 03:15 (nine years ago) link
not only was that not even that great a crossover, if you're gonna have MJ be part of your all-time best cross, at least choose his shot over russell
― k3vin k., Friday, 24 October 2014 03:15 (nine years ago) link
Oh cool, k3v has an opinion
― 龜, Friday, 24 October 2014 03:16 (nine years ago) link
MJ pushed off Russell ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
Thank you for the challop though, it has been filed in the Challop Archives
― 龜, Friday, 24 October 2014 03:17 (nine years ago) link
ai over mj is very important for cultural reasons
― lag∞n, Friday, 24 October 2014 03:17 (nine years ago) link
AI got MJ twice on the same play and then drained the shot, GOAT
my biggest beef with a lot of AIs best moves was they looked like carrying to me.
― Mathew Klickbait (Spottie), Friday, 24 October 2014 03:18 (nine years ago) link
Yeah refs had to basically start calling the carry after AI was in the league
― 龜, Friday, 24 October 2014 03:19 (nine years ago) link
Which imo is more a sign of how much AI influenced the game than a stain on aI

Yeah like AI was what, a rookie or a 2nd year when he did it (you can trace it because he hadn't started wearing cornrows yet) and MJ was in his prime
not sure how that wouldn't be in anyones top 10-15
― Mathew Klickbait (Spottie), Friday, 24 October 2014 03:21 (nine years ago) link
if it were just two regular players no one wld be talking abt that play
― lag∞n, Friday, 24 October 2014 03:22 (nine years ago) link
right, but
― Mathew Klickbait (Spottie), Friday, 24 October 2014 03:25 (nine years ago) link
Well it happened in 97
Think only TIMMAY had really done much advance work up to that point
― 龜, Friday, 24 October 2014 03:25 (nine years ago) link
Best part about AI's crossover was that it was always left right
Most players start w/ the dominant hand because it's easier & I think it's why they end up in stepback J's because it's hard to drive w/ the non dominant hand
AI tho made sure to end up on his dominant side and could get you with the jumper or the drive
― 龜, Friday, 24 October 2014 03:26 (nine years ago) link
yeah iverson def knew how to get to the basket w his crossover 5000%
― lag∞n, Friday, 24 October 2014 03:29 (nine years ago) link
Kinda wonder what teams were telling defenders tho, I never seen AI drive w/ his left
But his defenders kept on biting (RIP Antonio Daniels)
