People who like music shouldn't make music.

legendary North American forest ape (jon /via/ chi 2.0), Tuesday, 17 March 2009 19:43 (fifteen years ago) link

I'm okay with that.

Kickstart My Heartwork (J3ff T.), Tuesday, 17 March 2009 19:44 (fifteen years ago) link

I adore Loveless, and what is this 'music' you speak of.

Ned Raggett, Tuesday, 17 March 2009 19:45 (fifteen years ago) link

RIP music

But wait--

Announcing: the rebirth of Music!

I have never had much use for Kylesa, but I really like what I've heard from their new album. I get really strong Fugazi vibes from several songs, and a few times there's almost a stoney Grails vibe to some of the lead guitar work.

The Lost Boys Buff Guy Playing Sax (rockapads), Tuesday, 17 March 2009 20:15 (fifteen years ago) link

...and the guy's voice doesn't annoy me like it used to.

The Lost Boys Buff Guy Playing Sax (rockapads), Tuesday, 17 March 2009 20:15 (fifteen years ago) link

i found their earlier stuff reasonably enjoyable, but that's a great endorsement.

gaK! blah, why'd ya have to go and mention fugazi in the same breath as a great band like kylesa.

people who like fugazi should be loveless.

scott seward, Tuesday, 17 March 2009 20:24 (fifteen years ago) link

i like mbv,kylesa and fugazi.

Murderer.

Ned Raggett, Tuesday, 17 March 2009 20:37 (fifteen years ago) link

Groups who are influenced by Fugazi are more enjoyable to me than Fugazi themselves. I can't handle their off-key singing any more. I'm on board with the Loveless hate, though.

The Lost Boys Buff Guy Playing Sax (rockapads), Tuesday, 17 March 2009 20:41 (fifteen years ago) link

All this Loveless hatred explains why I've really been enjoying Rolling Metal Thread.

Mordy, Tuesday, 17 March 2009 20:45 (fifteen years ago) link

You Loveless haters are all nuts. Nuts, I tells ya.

A. Begrand, Tuesday, 17 March 2009 20:54 (fifteen years ago) link

Metal or 'metal' groups who are influenced by Fugazi Loveless are more enjoyable to me than Fugazi Loveless themselves itself.

Sundar, Tuesday, 17 March 2009 20:55 (fifteen years ago) link

(xpost)

Sundar, Tuesday, 17 March 2009 20:56 (fifteen years ago) link

Actually, Sundar OTM, come to think of it.

Groups who are influenced by Fugazi are more enjoyable to me than Fugazi themselves

Not sure about that (don't think I have much use for either Fugazi or their disciples, in other words), but it's what I always thought about Frank Zappa -- hence, my love for MX-80 Sound, Tin Huey, the Tubes, Plastic People of the Universe, and stuff like that.

xhuxk, Tuesday, 17 March 2009 21:05 (fifteen years ago) link

i enjoy actual frank zappa music more now than i thought i ever would. i can't imagine this ever being true of fugazi. but, honestly, i just blame that horrible 2nd vocalist dude. i can't listen to him at all. whereas ian is one of my favorite singers of all time. which just makes that band MORE painful to listen to. such a waste.

scott seward, Tuesday, 17 March 2009 21:19 (fifteen years ago) link

oh, but i AM a my bloody valentine fan. i don't need that much MBV in my metal though. a little goes a long way. and it really depends on how people use "the gaze". as i was mentioning earlier about nadja.

scott seward, Tuesday, 17 March 2009 21:20 (fifteen years ago) link

CHUCK, have you heard the new Giant Brain album yet?

i started a thread on it, but nobody on ilx has heard it yet.

OMG! I Can't Stop Listening To The New GIANT BRAIN Album!

scott seward, Tuesday, 17 March 2009 21:22 (fifteen years ago) link

cuz you would dig it. i think.

scott seward, Tuesday, 17 March 2009 21:22 (fifteen years ago) link

xp I could imagine dogs howling in pain at Ian's attempts at singing in Fugazi, too. He's a great yeller, though.

The Lost Boys Buff Guy Playing Sax (rockapads), Tuesday, 17 March 2009 21:24 (fifteen years ago) link

Not at all sure about the upcoming Judas Priest U.S. tour. Not only will they be performing British Steel in its entirety as part of their set, but the opening band (the only one announced so far, anyway) is Whitesnake. WTF?

unperson, Wednesday, 18 March 2009 18:40 (fifteen years ago) link

Yeah, that doesn't seem right, even though folks have been saying that the last Whitesnake album was a decent return to form. Maybe they think they'll get better attendance numbers by pandering to the summer classic rawk geezer crowd.

A. Begrand, Wednesday, 18 March 2009 18:44 (fifteen years ago) link

They are playing smaller venues, though, which will be cool. Doing the same place in Los Angeles that Iron Maiden played on their Dance of Death tour (in fact, that was the show where Bruce fell off the riser onto the drum set). I'm totally going to this.

Kickstart My Heartwork (J3ff T.), Wednesday, 18 March 2009 18:56 (fifteen years ago) link

Also agree with all the positive pixels spilled about the new Kylesa. They've really come a long way since boring the hell out of me opening for High on Fire in 2005.

Kickstart My Heartwork (J3ff T.), Wednesday, 18 March 2009 18:59 (fifteen years ago) link

i just told my friend clay about that priest/whitesnake tour and he's freaking out.

it is basically as if they called him in advance to plan this.

>They are playing smaller venues, though, which will be cool.

Here in NJ they're playing the same outdoor amphitheatre they played with Testament, Motörhead and Heaven & Hell.

unperson, Wednesday, 18 March 2009 19:04 (fifteen years ago) link

That's because New Jersey SUCKS. (Just kidding, spent a lot of my time there when I was growing up. Where are they playing, PNC?) And I'm not going to lie, I'm kind of curious to see Whitesnake in 2009.

Also, Kylesa's two drummers still = 1/2 Brann Daillor.

Guys, thanks for the book reccs upthread. I just got the Deena Weinstein book in through my library and it looks perfect.

Destruction posted this message today about tonight's cancelled show in Calgary...apparently they take muffins very, very seriously.

SORRY MATE BUT THIS "UNDERGROUND" CLUB HAS NO REAL PA & LIGHT RIG. WE TRIED TO TALK TO THE PROMOTER HE DIDN T GIVE A FUCK. YOU NEED AT LEAST SOMETHING THAT FEATURES/SUPPORTS THE VOCALS, OUR BACKLINE IS ALREADY 105 db. SO IT WASN T POSSIBLE TO PLAY,IT'S A BIG DISSAPOINTMENT CAUSE WE TRAVELED WITH A BROKEN TRAILER AND A FUCKED UP MUFFIN FOR TWO DAYS, TO PLAY THAT GIG. THIS SUCKS FOR US BIG TIME

A. Begrand, Wednesday, 18 March 2009 21:23 (fifteen years ago) link

A BROKEN TRAILER AND A FUCKED UP MUFFIN

This needs to be an album title.

Ned Raggett, Wednesday, 18 March 2009 21:25 (fifteen years ago) link

>guys if we keep this up there wont be anyone left

That's so metal

i, grey, Thursday, 19 March 2009 06:31 (fifteen years ago) link

thanks for your contribution!

Could some kind mod delete that idiocy? I don't mind idiocy, as long as it's on topic, but that just seems like trolling.

Kickstart My Heartwork (J3ff T.), Thursday, 19 March 2009 16:42 (fifteen years ago) link

so i'm pretty psyched by the first half of the kylesa album. they seem to be doing the improve slightly with each album thing perfectly. i could hear a lot more cool two-drummer stuff on this one.

He grew in Pussyville. Population: him. (call all destroyer), Thursday, 19 March 2009 16:50 (fifteen years ago) link

The new Unholy album is pretty great thrash-death. The guitar leads remind me of Rust In Peace-era Mustaine, both in terms of tone and speed/execution.

unperson, Thursday, 19 March 2009 17:06 (fifteen years ago) link

This needs to be an album title

Or a screen name.

yep.

Hey that thing you like? I hate it. (jjjusten), Thursday, 19 March 2009 22:23 (fifteen years ago) link

The Cobalt got delivered tonight, can't wait to dig into it.

legendary North American forest ape (jon /via/ chi 2.0), Friday, 20 March 2009 02:48 (fifteen years ago) link

Still loads and loads of metal to hear in 09, but the Cobalt is looking pretty darn unbeatable right now. It just keeps getting better the more I hear it.

I'm confused about Lacuna Coil... I've now heard this album called Manifesto Of. But the song Spellbound doesn't appear to be on it, and anyway I thought their new album was called Shallow Life? Anyone know what's going on, or what I'm listening to?

Mordy, Sunday, 22 March 2009 08:23 (fifteen years ago) link

Nevermind, think I figured it out. It's a Greatest Hits something or other, I think.

Mordy, Sunday, 22 March 2009 08:28 (fifteen years ago) link

I'm interviewing Cristina Scabbia tomorrow - anybody got any questions?

unperson, Sunday, 22 March 2009 16:17 (fifteen years ago) link

Can I mention hardcore albums I'm listening to here? Not exactly metal, but there's isn't another place for them...

(So far this year it would be the new Thursday album, "Common Existence," the Belle Epoque EP, "Wicked Ones and Thieves," and another New Brunswick screamo band, Let Me Run's new album "Meet Me At the Bottom.")
