anyway those portable EMV terminal things that are everywhere seem to all be made by Veriphone. Square's coming out with an EMV reader which could be a lot more chill than those things, and I expect that Apple Pay will sort of burst the logjam on new + clever NFC stuff in the US, since there will be like 40 million users of it a year from now.

Most of Europe is chip and pin

America is getting chips but it's mostly gonna be chip and sig

Cause I guess Americans are too lazy to remember two pins?

Used Apple pay today at Walgreens. Used my debit card but it sucked I still had to enter my pin. I mean, you have my fucking fingerprint, why do you need a stupid number still.

wait what why

ugh (lukas), Wednesday, 22 October 2014 08:17 (nine years ago) link

I can use my chip & sig card over here, I don't think it's been rejected in france the uk italy spain, though I mostly use my french chip + pin card anyway. you can get a chip + pin card from usaa but it doesn't have 0% foreign exchange fees.

droit au butt (Euler), Wednesday, 22 October 2014 08:23 (nine years ago) link

You can use the card in chip and pin countries but the chip is useless afaict. You have to explain you are from a steampunk country and you will need to sign and then they run it like an old card.

caek, Wednesday, 22 October 2014 11:42 (nine years ago) link

Sometimes the card reader is broken though

When that happens I take out my checkbook and write them a check

iPad Air 2 battery life significantly worse than iPad Air lmao

, Wednesday, 22 October 2014 11:56 (nine years ago) link

nah I mean use it in metro stations to buy tickets etc. I've never had trouble with any type of card when I give it to a ~person~.

though yeah I usually use my hi tek french card. my bank here has gotten ridic though; to use it to make internet purchases I had to
a) request internet purchasing, and get a contract by post for it a week later that I had to sign and return
b) after sending it back, got sent a few days later, again by post, a security code, that let me log onto the web portal & request my card of secret codes
c) got sent the card of secret codes a few days later, again by post; then I could log further onto the web portal & enable internet purchasing
now when I use it to buy stuff I get sent to a "3d verification site" where I can either use a secret code from my card of codes, or request an sms secret code

it's really something

I like visiting canada and kind of looking downward when I get my card out and say "I'm.... american" and they sign and get me a pen

⌘-B (mh), Wednesday, 22 October 2014 14:40 (nine years ago) link

what advantage does chip and sig have over just sig?

also what is the two pins thing? i have one pin and its the same whether i'm at the 'ole in the wall getting out my dickvandollars or i'm authorising a payment for my blood sossidge with a merchant. where does the second pin come into it?

Kevin Drum has written about the stupidity of the chip and signature system we are headed towards:

I have a US Chip and Sig Card and the chip works just fine, it just forces the machine to do a signature transaction, completely useless but no swipe required. The only place I'e ever had a problem was germany where the don't particularly like cards anyway, really hate foreign cards, so foreign cards that don't obey the rules are an absolute no no.

Chip is more secure than a stripe I think

Second pin = implication you might have to remember more than just your debit card pin (your chip credit cards would all have a pin too) but I guess you could go with one pin for everything

I used Apple Pay to pay for some on-phone shit today and it almost felt too easy to spend money, which I think is the idea

my jaw left (Hurting 2), Thursday, 23 October 2014 03:39 (nine years ago) link

how about just do one pin, that is more secure than a signature box you could literally draw a picture of your dick in and no one would ever complain

socki (s1ocki), Thursday, 23 October 2014 13:36 (nine years ago) link

would gladly sign up for a chip-and-dick-drawing system

do ppl really put lunches, metrocards, etc on their credit cards? i use my debit card for everything, so only one PIN to remember innit

of course with contactless there's no PIN required

TracerHandVEVO (Tracer Hand), Thursday, 23 October 2014 18:49 (nine years ago) link

Well, this is officially the first iPhone I have broken! Don't drop it screen-down directly on a rock. It's usable but I have AppleCare plus sooo a new one is in my future. Well, as soon as I'm near a Apple Store, which could take a few days.

⌘-B (mh), Thursday, 23 October 2014 18:56 (nine years ago) link

If you have a CC that generates frequent flyers miles, then hell yes. I pay just about everything (utilities, groceries, everything except my CC bill) with a CC and have generated enough miles in two years for three free round trip tickets to NYC and another to Seattle.

Elvis Telecom, Thursday, 23 October 2014 19:32 (nine years ago) link

the whole cash back thing is a huge incentive to use CC, since you're gonna spend that money anyway, might as well get the piddly 1% or whatever refund

Nhex, Thursday, 23 October 2014 19:40 (nine years ago) link

A few years ago my friends and I started a bank. When we began technical integration with our card processor, I asked to receive signatures (my coworker thought it’d be neat to display them alongside your transactions). I learned they never stored or even received them the network. Either the point-of-sale isn’t sending signatures over the network, our network (Visa) was dropping the signatures before they were received by our processor, or our processor received signatures but weren’t storing them. I suspect it’s a combination of the three across the networks and processors. If that’s the case, it’s rendered signatures completely useless.
