Why is casual racism/sexism more accepted in video games than other forms of media (these days)?

no "mostly" about it. disingenuous from the jump, but they've got a lot of mileage out of it.

Ex-ILXor/ILG mod Laura Hudson wrote a neat thing:

Even more fascinating is how these insecurities have allowed some gamers to consider themselves a downtrodden minority, despite their continued dominance of every meaningful sector of the games industry, from development to publishing to criticism. That demonstrates a strange and seemingly contradictory “overdog” phenomenon: The most powerful members of a culture often perceive an increase in social equality as a form of persecution. (To wit: the significant number of white Americans who say they face more racism than black people, or the persecution complex of some conservative Christians who believe that increasing cultural acceptance of gays and reproductive rights has transformed them into an oppressed minority—despite the fact that more than 80 percent of Americans identity as Christians.)

Ultimately, the anti-feminist movement in games has a great deal in common with the religious right; in both instances, their fixations on “ethics” and “values” come down not to a desire for a pluralist culture with a wide array of perspectives and values, but one where anything less than the absolute dominance of their own perspectives and values is perceived as “oppression."

Delbert Gravy (kingfish), Tuesday, 21 October 2014 17:48 (nine years ago) link

the secret is that gamergate really has fuck all to do with video games.

Steve 'n' Seagulls and Flock of Van Dammes (forksclovetofu), Tuesday, 21 October 2014 17:52 (nine years ago) link

the parallels are obvious but i think it's too easy/convenient to say it has nothing to do w/games or games culture

Chris Kluwe went ham (shocker, I know): https://medium.com/the-cauldron/why-gamergaters-piss-me-the-f-off-a7e4c7f6d8a6

i've been looking at the sam b bullying tweet uproar (along with the gamer-death articles uproar and that whole anil dash saga) as mostly a willful misunderstanding, same way fox news likes to dig for anything that could be perceived as a gaffe and then spend weeks (or years #BENGHAZIIIIII) screaming about it w/tears in their eyes on camera

totally, this is exactly it. and there's something i find so defeating about this wingnut disingenuity. it's like the height of 'if you can have your own opinions i can have my own facts' bullshit, and its impossible to engage and debate and communicate with people who will just choose which facts to ignore and believe (cf that awful bullying douchenozzle's previous awful fat shaming and suicide-baiting posts, ignored by the idiots who rail at sam biddle for 'bullying', or that guy on twitter ignoring milo's anti-gaming posts now he's pro #GG, and saying 'that was in the past but now he's doing his job which is journalism'). maybe that's how they get to maintain these entirely indefensible and self-serving and nonsensical 'moral' positions.

ha i have no idea who Chris Kluwe is but i enjoyed that blast
(probably not helpful at all honestly)

I think it mostly helps to deflect the hate, honestly. The amount of energy they will spend on hating on an NFL player is energy not spent harassing LW's 1, 2 & 3.

I kinda like it. Much faster than writing all their names. In other news, Adobe has asked Gawker to remove their logo from their site, because Adobe 'Stands Against Bullying'. If you're on twitter there are worse uses of time than to tweet them and let them know what you think of that.

My tweet: "@Adobe If you were against bullying, you would speak out against the movement of harrasment that #GamerGate devolved into. Shameful."

Frederik B, Tuesday, 21 October 2014 18:40 (nine years ago) link

also creative cloud wtf

lag∞n, Tuesday, 21 October 2014 18:41 (nine years ago) link

im all for that kluwe thing because idk man fuck helpful. plus by nature, that rant is going to hit the overall media a lot more than gamefaq counterarguments can thx to who he is

Ass Tchotchke! (jjjusten), Tuesday, 21 October 2014 18:43 (nine years ago) link

fuck helpful in the context of this thing, i mean. im down for total abject shaming of the entirety of these gamergate dicks all day every day.

Ass Tchotchke! (jjjusten), Tuesday, 21 October 2014 18:44 (nine years ago) link

they won't be shamed

also there are some pretty clear advantage for the people who are *actually* being threatened by this stuff to not having this stuff stirred up

u2 removal machine (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Tuesday, 21 October 2014 18:47 (nine years ago) link

like in this case it feels like chris being like "hey pay attention to me guys!!!"

u2 removal machine (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Tuesday, 21 October 2014 18:47 (nine years ago) link

Cluwe being a visible professional athlete - ostensibly these super macho guys who normally might be assumed to tow the line with reactionary conservatism - taking a stance is a good thing

Nhex, Tuesday, 21 October 2014 18:51 (nine years ago) link

visible ex-professional athlete i guess

Steve 'n' Seagulls and Flock of Van Dammes (forksclovetofu), Tuesday, 21 October 2014 18:52 (nine years ago) link

yup yup
you're next, Chris Bosh!

Nhex, Tuesday, 21 October 2014 18:53 (nine years ago) link

OTOH his profile is such that no one who knows who he is is going to be surprised by his stance here so I understand how this reads as empty posturing

💪😈⚠️ (DJP), Tuesday, 21 October 2014 18:53 (nine years ago) link

Kluwe really wasn't even known nationally (he's an NFL kicker which is about as un-macho a position as you can possibly have and still be considered a "professional athlete") until he crusaded for gay rights for about a year so he's p much widely seen as more of an internet SJW than a macho football player

u2 removal machine (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Tuesday, 21 October 2014 18:55 (nine years ago) link

and like i said i like chris a lot and he did a ton of good and raised a ton of money here in minnesota to help successfully overturn the ban on gay marriage

u2 removal machine (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Tuesday, 21 October 2014 18:55 (nine years ago) link

ah, fair enough. i really have no idea who he was

Nhex, Tuesday, 21 October 2014 18:56 (nine years ago) link

always these conversations devolve into optics, strategizing *j/o motion*

lag∞n, Tuesday, 21 October 2014 18:57 (nine years ago) link

tbf punter (which is what he was) is slightly more macho than kicker

mookieproof, Tuesday, 21 October 2014 18:58 (nine years ago) link

sounds to me like he's an NFL analogue to Mick Foley

Nhex, Tuesday, 21 October 2014 18:59 (nine years ago) link

doh punter lol and actually it might be less

u2 removal machine (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Tuesday, 21 October 2014 18:59 (nine years ago) link

I find him really obnoxious and unhelpful, overall. Also he is delusional about how good a punter he was.

polyphonic, Tuesday, 21 October 2014 19:02 (nine years ago) link

punter is the ultimate nfl nobody

i like kluwe and i am glad someone is being that guy but i wish he were better at it

Roberto Spiralli, Tuesday, 21 October 2014 19:12 (nine years ago) link

should we be talking about Sportsball in the Gamer place

polyphonic, Tuesday, 21 October 2014 19:13 (nine years ago) link

i keep waiting for advanced analytics types to start rallying around punters as incredibly important and worthy of left-tackle type money but i havent seen it yet.

ryan, Tuesday, 21 October 2014 19:13 (nine years ago) link

on a per play basis you could make a case but too few plays overall

Roberto Spiralli, Tuesday, 21 October 2014 19:14 (nine years ago) link

i've often wondered how self-styled alpha males get past the apparent paradox that whining about feminism is sorta *deeply un-masculine*

for "gamers" it almost seems as if they see themselves under assault on both sides of that continuum--in a way that strikes me as (and this is obvious) adolescent "mom and dad can't tell me what to do" stuff in the extreme. growing up is hard, etc.
