Obviously, all this side project nonsense should be ignored for now ... It's "The Cycle of Days and Seasons" season.

djh, Friday, 14 November 2014 20:17 (nine years ago) link

Cheers for the reminder, djh. (Although the Bracken and Great Panoptique Winter discs are also both excellent.)

doug watson, Friday, 14 November 2014 23:42 (nine years ago) link

Yes, thanks djh, and you are right! Barely know records that are so suitable to crawl up in the darkness to, with the wind and rain battering outside. Embracing northern grimness and misery. Rustic Houses feels more late summer-ish, Cold House is for when it gets below zero imho.

I found myself staring out the window forlornly to Outside Closer yesterday. Still Rain Fell indeed.

I may play this next. Great reminder

Outside Closer followed my Cycle just now.

Best band ever.

Cold House is the only one I don't really get

I listened to Silent '88 recently and it was fucking fabulous

imago, Saturday, 15 November 2014 19:53 (nine years ago) link

Just you wait till December and spin Cold House, you'll get it dude. Silent 88 is indeed fabulous.

"Exist Resist" is Norman Records album of the year (and is coming out on vinyl).

It is indeed, excellent .
If it was Aphex Twin or Boards of Canada, they'd all be lapping it up.
What's more, there's some real pop music a la Talk Talk swirling in and around. It's a festive cracker.

Still the best fucking band ever.

"Ever?"

Yes, ever.

Hail Hood for all eternity.

On many days, I'd agree with you ... though, strangely, you've posted one of my least liked Hood songs.

Yeah, the Seaman and The Tattered Sail album is excellent. And the 10 hour digital version is a particularly great deal for £6.

Bill Seaman's f(noir) is an equally wonderful ambient work, although obv more concise: http://eileanrec.bandcamp.com/album/f-noir

I'm loving that Man With A Tape Recorder mix.

Who is the Seaman and The Tattered Sail?

Not that I really mind, 'Hood related' has been enough for me to part with six quid.

écorché (S-), Friday, 24 July 2015 04:55 (eight years ago) link

Bill Seaman and Craig Tattersall (who played on some of the mid-period Hood recordings.) Not particularly Hood-related soundwise but as ambient recordings, it's an exceptional release.

doug watson, Friday, 24 July 2015 12:57 (eight years ago) link

It certainly is! Thanks

^ Tatterall plays in "the classic Hood line-up".

Anyway, you all know about the new/old Hood 7", yes?

No. Is it still available?

More "Hood-related":

Have pulled "The Cycle of Days and Seasons" off the shelf. This is unusually early in the year.

(Y'all know that there's a short vinyl run of this and "Rustic Houses" available at Norman Records?)

djh, Monday, 21 August 2017 20:20 (six years ago) link

That is early indeed :) Can relate though, played it in the car a couple of times last week. Didn't think it'd be a good car album at all, but it's Hood, so, yeah.

The new vinyl run is only 250 per right? Good on them. God how I wished they'd make a new album.

Le Bateau Ivre, Monday, 21 August 2017 21:12 (six years ago) link

I have no self control so picked up both of those vinyl re-issues, they're really good. Two albums I've always kind of overlooked because they are not 'Cold House', an album i deeply love.

michaellambert, Monday, 21 August 2017 21:38 (six years ago) link

once on a long car ride with some university peers of mine i managed to get them to play the entirety of rustic houses and all but the last 1 1/2 tracks of codename:dustsucker until the freakout halfway through 'shapeshifter' gave one of them conniptions

The Cycle of Days and Seasons is the fifth full-length album by Leeds-based band Hood. Both the LP and CD versions were released on Domino Records in 1999.

Track listing

"Western Housing Concerns"
"Hood is Finished"
"September Brings the Autumn Dawn"
"In Iron Light"
"How Can You Drag Your Body Blindly Through?"
"Houses Tilting Towards the Sea"
"Roads Lead Northwards"
"...The Cliff Edge of Workaday Morality"

It is time.

Le Bateau Ivre, Friday, 22 September 2017 20:33 (six years ago) link

oh god

imago, Friday, 22 September 2017 20:35 (six years ago) link

Blasting it over the meadows, through the fog, trying to keep dewy morning at bay right now. In vain. Muddled foggy mind succumbs to this feeling like a heroin addict to methadone.

Le Bateau Ivre, Friday, 22 September 2017 20:38 (six years ago) link

Houses Tilting = best Hood

plp will eat itself (NickB), Friday, 22 September 2017 20:38 (six years ago) link

It's an oddly transportive track for me - among other things it's that piano tolling like bell, it's that plaintive brass, I feel like I'm being summoned through space and time back home to a past I never had

plp will eat itself (NickB), Friday, 22 September 2017 21:25 (six years ago) link

you're worth the whole world still, IMO, the best piece of music they ever did
