anybody else experiencing lots of glitching in safari?

the late great, Friday, 17 October 2014 05:59 (nine years ago) link

i don't like this update at all!

the late great, Friday, 17 October 2014 06:01 (nine years ago) link

Not putting photos anywhere near anything Apple calls "beta"

new iTunes is butt ugly esp the red icon

Red icon probably down to feedback from users like me who are so short-sighted we kept clicking on the App Store icon for iTunes.

Aesthetically not very impressed with this update, haven't explored the functionality though.

Twist of Caliphate (Bob Six), Friday, 17 October 2014 07:28 (nine years ago) link

Adjusting OK. If "no iTunes sidebar ever" is not mandatory, at least this feels like the best implementation of it.

MacPorts completely borked. Safari way zippier.

Elvis Telecom, Friday, 17 October 2014 07:31 (nine years ago) link

"now mandatory"

Elvis Telecom, Friday, 17 October 2014 07:31 (nine years ago) link

You're still using MacPorts? the cool kids have been using Homebrew for years man, hate to break it to you

Spirit of Match Game '76 (silby), Friday, 17 October 2014 07:33 (nine years ago) link

otoh it all loaded ok on my mid-2007 iMac and safari seems faster, and iTunes and spotify still working fine - can't complain too much about the look.

as someone who has no "devices" (i.e. iPad, iPhone, etc.) and no interest in "the cloud" is there any especially good reason to install Yosemite on a 2009 MacBook Pro (currently running 10.6.8)?

I dunno. (amateurist), Friday, 17 October 2014 10:38 (nine years ago) link

i guess i should wait until it's been out for six months or more...

I dunno. (amateurist), Friday, 17 October 2014 10:39 (nine years ago) link

I don't use spotlight, but I can't see how it's that bad. It certainly wasn't great for me before, which is why I use Alfred.

Jeff, Friday, 17 October 2014 11:43 (nine years ago) link

just like last version if itunes, you can make it normal. Select "playlists" and it brings back the sidebar and select songs on the right and it looks like the same itunes as always.

dan selzer, Friday, 17 October 2014 12:36 (nine years ago) link

how can I change my folders from that bright blue color though?

dan selzer, Friday, 17 October 2014 12:40 (nine years ago) link

i am amazed that anyone installs a new version of the OS on opening day tbh!

socki (s1ocki), Friday, 17 October 2014 13:21 (nine years ago) link

Never had any issues doing it. Why stop now?

Jeff, Friday, 17 October 2014 13:23 (nine years ago) link

I'm still 10.6.8 at work. I updated the last one at home and have hated it ever since.

I don't want to share with my family. I don't want to share with my friends. I don't want to upload anything to a cloud. I don't want buying things online to be any easier.

Give me back my color labels.

pplains, Friday, 17 October 2014 13:29 (nine years ago) link

I've done this, but it involved fucking with the circuits a little.

I'll try to remember how I did that.

How do I get a Soirée folder?

Guayaquil (eephus!), Friday, 17 October 2014 13:46 (nine years ago) link

You can't afford it, honey.

pplains, Friday, 17 October 2014 14:01 (nine years ago) link

kinda feels windows-like? I like the old font better. and the battery icon.

do i need ios 8.1 for handoff? i haven't been seeing any of the features

diamonddave85 (diamonddave85), Friday, 17 October 2014 15:15 (nine years ago) link

No you need a specific kind of Bluetooth LTE, which I guess most macs don't have

stet, Friday, 17 October 2014 15:41 (nine years ago) link

i dont ever want to handoff sometimes when i update something my cpu starts getting texts and i just want to throw it in the river and start a new society

there's always a split second when i figure i should, followed immediately by the recognition that i should wait at least six months. and usually i don't even bother to install the new version after that length of time.

I dunno. (amateurist), Friday, 17 October 2014 16:06 (nine years ago) link

i still dont have whatever the last one was called because i was scared about the gmail thing

socki (s1ocki), Friday, 17 October 2014 16:09 (nine years ago) link

droit au butt (Euler), Friday, 17 October 2014 16:15 (nine years ago) link

it's a shame they didn't use this image as the background for OS 10.10

TracerHandVEVO (Tracer Hand), Friday, 17 October 2014 16:38 (nine years ago) link

I'm used to it, I do whatever they tell me.

Spirit of Match Game '76 (silby), Friday, 17 October 2014 16:40 (nine years ago) link

I usually do it right away because I like shiny new things and usually don't have any major problems.

dan selzer, Friday, 17 October 2014 16:41 (nine years ago) link

ya i like it its good steve job is god prob

lag∞n, Friday, 17 October 2014 16:43 (nine years ago) link

Anyway if the janky iPad lineup for this FY is any indication the tablet thing is kind of an evolutionary dead end, they are the phone but with a much bigger screen and that's looking kind of niche at this point. Like for ppl who are really into getting work done on a tablet, or doing some art stuff, or watching Netflix/porn in bed. I'm going to keep my iPad 2 going another year on iOS 6 and save my money for a steel Watch.

Spirit of Match Game '76 (silby), Friday, 17 October 2014 16:54 (nine years ago) link

tablets are good for kids, lots of professional situations, people who love devices, watching tv in bed, big one maybe we havent really seen yet is home computer replacement just have a tabby no lappy, but agree that huge phones are gonna eat into their market, also it was the fastest growing device category ever and people maybe just got too excited idk

lag∞n, Friday, 17 October 2014 16:58 (nine years ago) link

tablets are good for lectures/talks

I dunno. (amateurist), Friday, 17 October 2014 17:00 (nine years ago) link

that's disappointing

Bah I was afraid of that. I'm still obstinate about how I want my UNIX stuff set-up.

Elvis Telecom, Friday, 17 October 2014 17:50 (nine years ago) link

I feel like the whole desktop/laptop/tablet/e-reader/phablet/phone thing needs some time to shake itself, like people just feel overwhelmed with new devices and types within those devices and aren't sure yet which ones they most need.

my jaw left (Hurting 2), Friday, 17 October 2014 18:07 (nine years ago) link

We have either an iPad or an iPad 2 (I'm actually not sure which it is) we still use mostly for my daughter -- got dropped but everything except the front camera work fine, and my wife got a first gen iPad mini for her studies -- has most of her textbooks etc. on there and she works on papers on it with a keyboard. I really can't fathom wanting a newer iPad for a long, long time if it didn't do something majorly new and impressive.

my jaw left (Hurting 2), Friday, 17 October 2014 18:12 (nine years ago) link

I have an iPad 3 and want a new one for the lightening connector, and for it to run iOS 8 better. 8 is not very smooth for me, would be nice to have a device that it was more responsive on.

But really there is no way I'm upgrading, especially after having just spent so much money on 2 iphone 6's. We'll wait till next year.

Jeff, Friday, 17 October 2014 18:16 (nine years ago) link

tablets are good for lying on my couch and playing games

socki (s1ocki), Friday, 17 October 2014 18:34 (nine years ago) link

and as a spotify/whatever player i plug into my stereo

socki (s1ocki), Friday, 17 October 2014 18:34 (nine years ago) link

but unlike phones... i have an ipad 2 and i have verrrry little desire to upgrade

socki (s1ocki), Friday, 17 October 2014 18:35 (nine years ago) link

gotta save up for that watch edition

my jaw left (Hurting 2), Friday, 17 October 2014 18:36 (nine years ago) link
