fuck it, at some point I'll do a Cardiacs & Affiliated ballot poll and I don't care how many of you vote

Ƹ༑Ʒ (imago), Friday, 17 October 2014 01:24 (nine years ago) link

can you move "Shoegaze/Dream Pop/Post-rock (Albums and EPs)" into that vacated # 81 spot? then can you add The Jesus and (fucking) Mary Chain into that 104 slot? thanks.

Bee OK, Sunday, 19 October 2014 07:22 (nine years ago) link

I was just going to redo the numbering, but you want to jump 23 places in line? I'll open the floor to opinions on it.

Meanwhile, a Chic poll isn't happening without a volunteer. An Iggy/Stooges poll isn't happening without a volunteer.

warning, #4 can't be unseen (WilliamC), Sunday, 19 October 2014 13:45 (nine years ago) link

it was not about jumping the queue, it was more about filling in the blank spot. redoing the numbering works too as it looks like those two poll will be dropped?

Bee OK, Sunday, 19 October 2014 18:29 (nine years ago) link

lol

mookieproof, Sunday, 19 October 2014 18:57 (nine years ago) link

so uh what's going on with the order here? The Pixies jumped 8 spots or something? I am still into doing the P-Funk poll (which will take a good deal longer than the XTC one I just did, I expect).

Οὖτις, Friday, 24 October 2014 15:45 (nine years ago) link

Shakey is burning through these XTC results with great haste. Whose poll is nominating next?

Maybe you can get an answer out of somebody, I've gone all invisible.

Will someone send me a mail when it's time for me to start the Stereolab poll? Or any estimate dates?

― Moka, Wednesday, October 15, 2014 6:26 PM (1 week ago) Bookmark Flag Post Permalink

If no one steps in, I'm gonna slide my Pixies poll up.

JF, no objection from me.

Make my funk the right now.

Eric H., Friday, 24 October 2014 15:53 (nine years ago) link

I'll post an updated list later today. If nobody volunteers for Chic or Iggy, they're going to the bottom of the list. And won't the Chic and Iggy fans be mad then, at something they could have done something about.

Pict in a blanket (WilliamC), Friday, 24 October 2014 16:02 (nine years ago) link

Well, write me up for a Tropicalia/MPB poll after them. I'll spend the next three years pushing brazilian music to drum up excitement and get people to vote.

ah right yeah I thought I saw that somewhere recently

P-Funk poll gonna be epic

Οὖτις, Friday, 24 October 2014 20:28 (nine years ago) link

have begun listening to the entire P-Funk catalog in chronological order to prepare, see you guys in a week or so lol

Οὖτις, Friday, 24 October 2014 20:31 (nine years ago) link

I wish I knew anything about P-Funk beyond "Maggot Brain."

Pict in a blanket (WilliamC), Friday, 24 October 2014 20:33 (nine years ago) link

don't worry I'm sure that will be either no. 1 or no. 2 depending on who turns out to vote. I assume top 3 will be Flashlight, Maggot Brain, and Atomic Dog in no particular order.

Οὖτις, Friday, 24 October 2014 20:40 (nine years ago) link

Oh man, P-Funk, I do need to prep for that. Know about four or five of the Parliament records really well, but Funkadelic I've barely explored.

Doctor Casino, Friday, 24 October 2014 23:04 (nine years ago) link

this is one where I really think the nominations thread will be helpful, because just compiling a comprehensive discography is a bit of a task, and there's loads of quality material buried in the catalog.

Οὖτις, Friday, 24 October 2014 23:07 (nine years ago) link

Holy shit, that list just scared the fuck out of me.

pplains, Saturday, 25 October 2014 01:20 (nine years ago) link

Heh, so we'll be going from Stephen Merritt to Metallica. There's a transition.

Spaceman 3 (& descendants) - Elvis Telecom - on hold until fall 2014

isn't it the fall of 2014?

Don A Henley And Get Over It (C. Grisso/McCain), Saturday, 25 October 2014 02:26 (nine years ago) link

I guess I'll start the Italo one in about a week or so. It is my first ILM Ballot poll so If someone can share some guidance on how to do run things (timelines, vote counting, scoring) I'd appreciate that.
(totalpop AT gmail DOT com).

daavid, Monday, 27 October 2014 01:06 (nine years ago) link

Genre polls should definitely have an extended voting period. Like, no less than 3 weeks. Ballot size and scoring should be based on how much you're comfortable tabulating. 100 track ballots, unless you want to spend A LOT of time putting together final results, are probably over the top for a first time pollrunner.

Johnny Fever, Monday, 27 October 2014 01:35 (nine years ago) link

Agreed. My disco poll had 50 track ballots, and even those were a whole lot of work to tally. Presumably the Italo poll will have less voters, but still...

You might also consider doing a nomination thread first, because even with a relatively narrow genre like Italo, you could end up with a ridiculously large xls list if you let people vote freely without a predefined list. Also, before you start the nomination/voting thread, you need to a good definition of "Italo", so people won't start arguing what track is eligible and what's not. Is "Italo" defined by having been produced in Italy, or by a specific sound? Limiting the voting to tracks released in a specific period of time might be a good idea too, to stop people from nominating questionable entries. (My disco poll was limited to the years 1972 - 1984 so that people wouldn't nom stuff like proto-disco or house music.)

Tuomas, Monday, 27 October 2014 08:36 (nine years ago) link

Thanks JF and Tuomas. I think I'll follow the nominations suggestion. I've given some thought to it and feel like it's too hard to put time and geographical constraints on Italo though (I want more recent acts like Italove or Sally Shapiro to be eligible), so I'm just gonna go with whatever people think is Italo and let think sort themselves out. Also I think I'll do 40 track ballots.

daavid, Monday, 27 October 2014 14:53 (nine years ago) link

*let things

daavid, Monday, 27 October 2014 14:53 (nine years ago) link

Recommend not starting too soon lest you step on the P-Funk poll turnout. Starting a new poll while the previous one's results are being rolled out is cool and recommended, but two open voting periods going at the same time seems like it could cut into the turnout for both. Also, if you're going to accept everybody's definitions of Italo, no need for a nominations thread, right? One thread for voting/campaigning/kibitzing, then a thread for results.

Pict in a blanket (WilliamC), Monday, 27 October 2014 15:15 (nine years ago) link

can i cut in line since Johnny Fever got to cut in front of me

example (crüt), Monday, 27 October 2014 15:17 (nine years ago) link

like, idgi, you know how to get in touch with me, it seems really shitty for people to jump ahead in the queue when some of us have been waiting for 2 fucking years

example (crüt), Monday, 27 October 2014 15:19 (nine years ago) link

that was the whole point of doing things this way

example (crüt), Monday, 27 October 2014 15:20 (nine years ago) link

i'll start it tonight since it's a free-for-all

example (crüt), Monday, 27 October 2014 15:26 (nine years ago) link

plz to see upthread where the next two polls were abandoned and moved to the end of the line and others were being delayed by their runners, so it seemed like a good time to try and fill a vacuum. Check the thread more often.
