well ariel pink has a double album coming out in a month and grimes does not

ET sippin the wig (spazzmatazz), Wednesday, 15 October 2014 12:05 (nine years ago) link

it's disturbing how much time grimes seems to spend not making music or getting distracted on twitter/tumblr

ET sippin the wig (spazzmatazz), Wednesday, 15 October 2014 12:06 (nine years ago) link

maybe she should just do what she feels like doing

Treeship, Wednesday, 15 October 2014 12:28 (nine years ago) link

she had an album ready to release but scrapped it because it wasn't up to her standards... i'd imagine visions is tough to follow up because it's one of the most distinctive releases this decade so far. hope she's not "psyched out" by the pressure but i understand why she is careful about what she attaches her name to after establishing herself as a major figure.

her tumblr presence is great.

ariel pink is an amazing "outsider" musician but in the mainstream he's predictably floundered... musically, i think, but also he's just not equipped to be speaking in public.

Treeship, Wednesday, 15 October 2014 12:32 (nine years ago) link

i agree her fans can be a little too worshipful but i don't think that comes from condescension. plenty of people will leap to the defense of kanye or whatever other male celebrity they idoloize. i think people just love grimes.

Treeship, Wednesday, 15 October 2014 12:34 (nine years ago) link

you're right, i take that back (sorry, always bit nasty in the morning). bc she actually does seem to be making music constantly, and all the other shit she does in the press/online (especially the recent How to Be a Boss essay) is dope. i can't wait for her new record and was very depressed to hear she had scrapped one. honestly i dont have a leg to stand on with all this except separate the art from the artist, AP's Limbaugh schtick is schtick but it still sucks and makes no sense and it bums me out as a massive fan of his music. he's also, like someone said upthread (or was that in the ariel pink thread?), been an asshole in interviews since 2005, so... I'm excited for pom pom and grimes LP3

ET sippin the wig (spazzmatazz), Wednesday, 15 October 2014 12:35 (nine years ago) link

same feeling i have to fight w/r/t tao lin

ET sippin the wig (spazzmatazz), Wednesday, 15 October 2014 12:35 (nine years ago) link

I still fail to see how saying that Madonna just knows how to dance and hire producers to write her music is a comment directed against all women and not just her, if anything it's a snide comment against pop stardom. I've made similar comments myself and they have nothing to do with gender. It's just feeding on the idea that pop stars very rarely write their own music. I see One Direction as dancing puppets that don't write their own songs, does that make me a misandrist?

"OTM"

You guys are no fun! Ariel is one of the greatest, terrible musicians to have ever musicianed. Grimes' music (equally 'bad' to Ariel's imo) has lost what initially drew me to her, which was her ability to produce and write catchy, interesting songs that sounded extremely diy. It sickens me how many of her supporters are so patronizing toward her and treat her like a wounded animal who constantly needs defending and pats on the back. I'm a fan of both but her manic-pixie-dreamgirl stuff projected onto her by fans is so bizarre to me.

"OTM" you're a little bit "OTM" but she does call herself a fairy pixie at frequent intervals so its not projected onto her. Also how has she lost what drew you to her in her music when she stopped releasing music since Visions. Go was also catchy, just that terrible "Blood Diamonds" dudes terrible production routines.

can we reorient the whole different-standards-for-female-musicians discussion around this quote

schlump, Wednesday, 15 October 2014 16:25 (nine years ago) link

just the idea that it's 'disturbing' is disturbing

GhostTunes on my Pono (Sufjan Grafton), Wednesday, 15 October 2014 16:35 (nine years ago) link

Blood Diamonds is actually working on the new Madonna album lol

Number None, Wednesday, 15 October 2014 16:37 (nine years ago) link

One Direction is a group put together 4 years ago on a British TV show, comparing that to Madonna is pretty silly.

©Oz Quiz© (Adam Bruneau), Wednesday, 15 October 2014 16:38 (nine years ago) link

Blood Diamonds is actually working on the new Madonna album lol

Apart from that being hilarious all this now makes a lot more sense

Wait...

Ugh this is horrible moves from all involved. This is not what twitter is good at.

Raccoon Tanuki, Wednesday, 15 October 2014 16:51 (nine years ago) link

it's disturbing that we can all spend as much time on the internet as we all clearly do while still working full-time or holding down other life responsibilities but pretend that it's totally weird and unnatural for famous people

some dude, Wednesday, 15 October 2014 17:46 (nine years ago) link

you're right, i apologize, it doesn't make sense since she is working on music constantly. 'disturbing' isn't the right word, more like disappointing, bc i want to hear new grimes. i feel the same way about isaac brock but he's had seven fucking years

ET sippin the wig (spazzmatazz), Wednesday, 15 October 2014 17:49 (nine years ago) link

and he never tweets hmmmm it's almost like there's absolutely no relationship between social media presence and artistic productivity

some dude, Wednesday, 15 October 2014 17:52 (nine years ago) link

We Were Dead Before the Ship Even Sank was the best MM album and probably found Brock at his ceiling as a songwriter, and he probably knows it, so don't wish for an album that's only going to disappoint you.

Johnny Fever, Wednesday, 15 October 2014 17:53 (nine years ago) link

We Were Dead Before the Ship Even Sank was the best MM album

say what bruh??

u2 removal machine (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Wednesday, 15 October 2014 18:17 (nine years ago) link

I am king challop when it comes to MM and I know it.

Johnny Fever, Wednesday, 15 October 2014 18:19 (nine years ago) link

i could see that. it's a damn good record, better than good news, more rocking, less tom waits

ET sippin the wig (spazzmatazz), Wednesday, 15 October 2014 18:21 (nine years ago) link

we were dead is probably my favorite modest mouse album, but the idea that the lack of follow-up comes from isaac brock thinking he couldn't possibly top it so why bother, rather a mix of indifference on his part and interscope's, is pretty funny

da croupier, Wednesday, 15 October 2014 18:23 (nine years ago) link

"and then johnny marr left and i was like, well fuuuuuuuck how could i ever write another 'dashboard' my work here on earth is done"

da croupier, Wednesday, 15 October 2014 18:24 (nine years ago) link

whoops they're on epic or were, who knows at this point

da croupier, Wednesday, 15 October 2014 18:25 (nine years ago) link

they have a handful of new songs like "Shit in Your Cut" they've been playing live for years now, none of them sound very good

ET sippin the wig (spazzmatazz), Wednesday, 15 October 2014 18:29 (nine years ago) link

it's definitely possible that he knows he'll never make as much in royalties again

da croupier, Wednesday, 15 October 2014 18:30 (nine years ago) link

lonesome crowded west c'mon y'all...

u2 removal machine (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Wednesday, 15 October 2014 18:31 (nine years ago) link

Oh, I was only kidding about him contemplating his limitations after the last album. Maybe dude's just not into writing that much anymore.

Johnny Fever, Wednesday, 15 October 2014 18:32 (nine years ago) link

all the LP's are too bloated by about 3-4 songs, imo Everywhere and His Nasty Parlor Tricks is their best release front to back

ET sippin the wig (spazzmatazz), Wednesday, 15 October 2014 18:32 (nine years ago) link

Night on the Sun is best jam

GhostTunes on my Pono (Sufjan Grafton), Wednesday, 15 October 2014 18:36 (nine years ago) link

It's a mark of how bad this thread had become that the swerve into Modest Mouse discussion actually seems like a slight improvement.

Tim F, Wednesday, 15 October 2014 18:37 (nine years ago) link

oh man, "You're the Good Things," "Here it Comes," the extended "I Came as a Rat".... totally classic. i know ILX hates modest mouse for the most part

4:40 in this video, Grimes talking about Madonna: "..even though she sucks now".

-LOL-

Raccoon Tanuki, Thursday, 16 October 2014 13:59 (nine years ago) link

whoops

how's life, Thursday, 16 October 2014 14:01 (nine years ago) link

i think the issue was the way ariel pink discounted madonna, criticizing her for trying to hold onto her faded youth and that her work needs more substance -- "sugar in the mac and cheese" -- from male songwriters such as himself. he didn't just say "i haven't been too enthusiastic about madonna's recent efforts" or something.

post from that Grimes video

Raccoon Tanuki, Thursday, 16 October 2014 14:03 (nine years ago) link

that said, and i will say it again, ariel pink doesn't know what he is saying because he is a weird, crazy guy who spent his twenties in his parent's basement.

Treeship, Thursday, 16 October 2014 14:04 (nine years ago) link

also ariel gets no benefit of the doubt after that sexist shit he was saying about that girl he took home in that one video, that was low shit

u2 removal machine (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Thursday, 16 October 2014 14:18 (nine years ago) link

idk, i think people are leaping to that reading given all of his other press where he said dumb/offensive things in a deadpan way, for some reason, but saying madonna's music lacks substance these days/for many years, isn't a controversial opinion is it? he exaggerates wildly though by saying she's been shit since before Like a Virgin and putting sugar in mac and cheese would ever be acceptable.

he's trolling because he has a record coming out in november

ET sippin the wig (spazzmatazz), Thursday, 16 October 2014 14:21 (nine years ago) link

xpost yea in that same "i got maced by a feminist" bullshit interview, he says that gay sex "isn't really sex"
he's not a bigot, just really cynical 'playing the heel'

ET sippin the wig (spazzmatazz), Thursday, 16 October 2014 14:23 (nine years ago) link

what a disaster for the self-aware heel if he's mistaken for a misogynist

da croupier, Thursday, 16 October 2014 14:27 (nine years ago) link

He's not a bigot he's just using hurtful language in a trolling way to get a rise out of people? Call me cray but I think that makes him a bigot nonetheless.

Can't imagine Grimes reasons for saying "Madonna sucks now" in that video were much or any different from Ariel Pinks, i.e, the same opinion of everybody on why she sucks now.

Raccoon Tanuki, Thursday, 16 October 2014 14:33 (nine years ago) link

we've reached the "are people who still claim the issue was ariel saying madonna's music ain't good now trolling or genuinely clueless" portion of the thread

da croupier, Thursday, 16 October 2014 14:39 (nine years ago) link

There are like 8million people ITT and the other one going "IDGI, what's wrong with saying Madonna sucks now?" as if that's the problem, rather than the wording of his statement.

Matt DC, Thursday, 16 October 2014 14:44 (nine years ago) link

yeah this is frustrating

there's just something so goofy about the "woah, woah, the guy who casually says sexist shit may be a jerk, but that doesn't mean he's a real-deal, dyed-in-the-wool, my-woman-belongs-in-the-kitchen SEXIST" argument, as if it's important everyone be really delicate and careful in our estimation of egomaniacs who clearly don't give a fuck
