The Wilmore one was actually pretty great and interesting. But I swear, Marc is about six months away from a spin-off podcast called, So, Who Are Your Black Guys?.

Went to one of the Trepany House shows tonight. Silly at times and I'll never tire of the ice cream story. I like it when Marc goes contemptous - mercilessly on Sting of all people "someone who needs to be recognized." Maladjustment in the life a middle-tier cable show celebrity is suddenly more relatable. Seeing him live go from zero to full-out rage is still "whoa!" moment (was talking about going from Skype sex to Skype fighting). Fully realize that I am being one of the bloggers he mocks by writing this.

I don't think I could spend more than five minutes in the same room with Bob Rubin before going insane.

Johnny Fever, Thursday, 16 October 2014 16:33 (nine years ago) link

i couldn't make it more than five minutes in the same room with his podcast.

festival culture (Jordan), Friday, 17 October 2014 16:40 (nine years ago) link

The Rubin podcast was almost too much to bear. Marc handled it pretty well, and was able to maintain at least a little objectivity when Rubin was talking about the REALLY dark times.

Does anyone else feel like a total fucking tourist when you hear stories like this one, the details surrounding Robin Williams' private life, or other mental health/chemical dependency issues? I constantly go very quickly from (1) Man, that's fucked up, to (2) I'm glad that's not me, to (3) Man, I feel guilty about using someone else's bad times to make myself feel better about my own.

Maron on Buddhism was great. "So you know that movie The Last Detail, when Randy Quaid is hanging out with those hippies? That's basically where Buddhism was coming from in that era, right? Amazing how many cults there were in Los Angeles in the 60's and 70's. So anyways..."

Brio2, Tuesday, 21 October 2014 15:57 (nine years ago) link

in his search for self Maron has picked up much wisdom

Pre-interview Marc bores me for the most part (like most ppl) but his Sting story was funny. Rob Rubin is a good stand-up, there's some stuff of his on YouTube/Vimeo although not a lot.

everyday sheeple (Michael B), Tuesday, 21 October 2014 16:44 (nine years ago) link

Rubin's the second guy on WTF who used to be part of Comedy Corner at the University of AZ. (The other was Graham Elwood.)

lol @ Andre Arroyo's story about seeing Rocky in a black theater and the whole audience rooting for the white guy to beat up the black guy. THAT'S MOVIE MAGIC.

Johnny Fever, Friday, 24 October 2014 17:53 (nine years ago) link

Royo, even.

Johnny Fever, Friday, 24 October 2014 18:10 (nine years ago) link

I dug that conversation, and am VERY glad they took a long time to get to the Wire. Dude had an interesting upbringing, and was a good interviewee. He and Maron were obviously having a good time talking with each other.

Hydroelectric New Deal Demiurge (B.L.A.M.), Friday, 24 October 2014 19:22 (nine years ago) link

Yeah, that was a fun interview to hear. I've still never even watched The Wire, so when I do I'll be looking extra forward to seeing his part.

Johnny Fever, Friday, 24 October 2014 19:25 (nine years ago) link

Pretty sure he's the only character in each of the five seasons that's not a cop. As noted in the interview, he's the common thread for the whole story.

Shit, now I wanna go watch the Wire again.

Dr. Drew: [Long explanation of traumatic anxiety from wanting to do good and help people and having views distorted by tabloids.]

Marc: So did you ever try Viagra? How about that?

the man with the black wigs (Eazy), Thursday, 6 November 2014 08:08 (nine years ago) link

marc seemed really eager to talk over the guy to explain his own Deep Thoughts About Human Psychology

bizarro gazzara, Thursday, 6 November 2014 10:07 (nine years ago) link

when i used to listen to Dan Savage more, i remember that he would often bring up the dumb/ignorant viewpoints held by Dr. Drew, but forget the details. something about being prone to pathologizing people's sexuality.

festival culture (Jordan), Thursday, 6 November 2014 15:03 (nine years ago) link

Dr. Drew also believes that women who speak with high pitched voices were molested as children.

Vivino's fun to listen to.

Johnny Fever, Thursday, 6 November 2014 18:48 (nine years ago) link

yeah i remember the voice thing became a pretty gross running joke with him and corolla on loveline where they'd put the caller on hold and try to guess at what age and how many times she was molested. i remember thinking "maybe these two should stop doing this show, it's turning them into monsters"

The whole section about Dr. Drew's early involvement in the AIDS crisis, and how that directly led to a call-in show for talking aloud about sex, was especially interesting.

the man with the black wigs (Eazy), Friday, 7 November 2014 05:04 (nine years ago) link

Mulaney: You saw my worst show ever.
Maron: (alluding to some other show he saw....which, ouch!)
Mulaney: No, I'm talking about Aspen.
Maron: I was there?
Mulaney: You were the host.

Johnny Fever, Monday, 17 November 2014 16:58 (nine years ago) link

I just found that whole exchange funny.

Johnny Fever, Monday, 17 November 2014 16:59 (nine years ago) link

Vivino interview contained some excellent Jersey lore

los blue jeans, Tuesday, 18 November 2014 02:42 (nine years ago) link

man Maron's tone in some of that Mulaney interview, it's like old bitter Maron was waiting in the wings to come out gunning for the young successful new guy. not overt, but just the timing of the questions...jeez

like boom STRAIGHT into how long he's been sober with no leadup

I'm enjoying the conversation and I think Mulaney's great but I felt a bit embarrasssed for Maron that he still can't help doing that

difficult-difficult lemon-difficult (VegemiteGrrl), Tuesday, 18 November 2014 02:46 (nine years ago) link

Have listened to half this Dr. Drew thing and it's totally living up to my expectations. A Platonic example of the interaction where guest says "I don't really want to talk about _____" and Maron says "yeah but we're gonna" and then somehow they do.

Guayaquil (eephus!), Tuesday, 18 November 2014 04:39 (nine years ago) link

I don't really spend any time at all in the Dr. Drew-verse, so I didn't realize until a couple days ago that his wife Susan has her own radio show that focuses on psychics and mediums and astrology and alien abductions and shit. That's...odd.

Johnny Fever, Tuesday, 18 November 2014 04:49 (nine years ago) link
