It's their first hiphop bnm of the year, and the first half of the review is about how Vince Staples dislikes the rest of hiphop...

That new Parkay Court song is a Teenage Cool Kids cover.
But the reviewer doesn't know it I guess..

Isn't the singer of Teenage Cool Kids the singer of Parkay Farts?

The album, which, like 2011’s Tomboy, was co-produced with former Spiritualized member Pete Kember, aka Sonic Boom.

On September 30, Daniel Crespo, the mayor of the Los Angeles suburb of Bell Gardens, was shot and killed. It wasn’t a political assassination. His wife pulled the trigger. This event is utterly unrelated to Slow Dawns for Lost Conclusions, the second album by the dreamy, chamber-pop ensemble Bell Gardens.

Seems like pfork really oughta know Adam Granduciel's last name. Guess Kozelek has the last laugh here if his intention was to purposely mangle dude's name so just this sorta thing would happen. I'm anti-Koz in this thing but that's pretty good strategy. Also, unforgivable typos in this piece. And while we're at it - we're really still talking about this?

Jimmywine Dyspeptic, Thursday, 30 October 2014 07:10 (nine years ago) link

Apparently, Adam Granofsky is his birth name

voodoo chili, Thursday, 30 October 2014 15:50 (nine years ago) link

how could pitchfork not know that adam granduciel's real name is actually adam granduciel? they even ran an entire longform feature this year in which they talk about how his name is actually adam granofsky. how could they screw this up?

From the earlier Pitchfork piece on War on Drugs:

In completing his first cassette, he labeled it “Granduciel,” a portmanteau and nickname given to him by a high school French teacher as a joke, a word-for-word translation of the English words in his real last name, Granofsky

xpost that YG record would be borderline perfect if not for "do it to ya" and "me & my bitch" - former bc it's hot trash and latter is just super meh and it being sequenced after "do it" almost irreperably fucks the momentum of the album in the gallbladder but fortunately "who do you love" is there to save the day

totally good stuff on here:

was debating buying that naked island LP on discogs just the other day. one of the dudes from starving weirdos who i love a ton.

i went to the chain store across the street this morning to get barrel brothers album and step brothers album and they didn't have either one cuz they are SO LAME!! lamest store on earth. total Deviant Type Titans over there in that mess. so, i did end up getting the YG on cd and i'm glad i did cuz it sounds amazing on cd and on my big-ass tandy-brand foghat speakers. and i got schoolboy q at a reduced price. but not the deluxe edition. i ain't going on no fuckin' amazon for some skyzoo. kinda one of the only minuses about living around here. maple syrup up the ass but no skyzoo in sight.

scott seward, Monday, 10 November 2014 16:53 (nine years ago) link

the bonus tracks on that schoolboy record aren't any good (the album itself is v enjoyable and great in places), so no loss there

ichabron crames (slothroprhymes), Monday, 10 November 2014 16:57 (nine years ago) link

yeah figured as much. and the schoolboy album is great, but i wanted to hear this on my big speakerz:

still the rap record of the year, tho, unless RTJ overtakes it in these last two months. hard to imagine that happening; i played "Krazy" almost nonstop all summer

alpine static, Tuesday, 11 November 2014 16:27 (nine years ago) link

a-wax is up there for me, but it's kind of depressing to play all the time

punk rocketeer (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Tuesday, 11 November 2014 16:28 (nine years ago) link

^^ need to hear that

admittedly, YG is a standout in a rough year for rap albums

this is an extremely wrong opinion -- one of the reasons why the album is so strong is because the R&B tracks are incredible

J0rdan S., Tuesday, 11 November 2014 16:55 (nine years ago) link

wut, i mean "me & my bitch" isn't bad, per se, just kinda a step down whereas idk how much syrup was consumed to make "do it to ya" sound like a good idea imo

i havent listened to krazy life all the way through - w/o skipping those tracks - in a while tho, so a reevaluation in full is in order

ichabron crames (slothroprhymes), Tuesday, 11 November 2014 17:00 (nine years ago) link

i agree with slothrop, what is incredible about the r&b tracks? they're so boring. rest of the album is what's excellent

lex pretend, Tuesday, 11 November 2014 17:04 (nine years ago) link

i should've said that they're incredible for being obvious for-the-ladies tracks, but they're also just very good songs in their own right. you guys really can't vibe to "me & my bitch" what the hell? both of those songs are classic smooth summer songs.

in a sense YG lucked out that mustardwave has encompassed thugged out male R&B singing, it really keeps 'my krazy life' afloat and fits right in the tone of the album. i mean the legacy of rap albums that sag because ill-fitting R&B songs are shoehorned into the tracklist is obvious? "do it to ya" & "me & my bitch" remind me of how t.i. snuck "why you wanna" into 'king' (except times 2)

J0rdan S., Tuesday, 11 November 2014 17:35 (nine years ago) link

i highly recommend hearing the album on CD thru good speakers. if that's possible. sounds so friggin' cool. loud too. listen loud. they did a great job with the disc. kinda tempted to go buy the Future album just to hear it thru my big speakers at work. bet that would sound awesome.

scott seward, Tuesday, 11 November 2014 17:38 (nine years ago) link

i love the flow of the YG album.

scott seward, Tuesday, 11 November 2014 17:39 (nine years ago) link

YG/Future are amazing, but lets all just agree that RTJ2 is better
