We don't know enough... Yelpers are awful at nonverbal cues and social behavior in general, I can totally imagine the staff trying to make eye contact on the way out, but customer was knee deep in yelping the last place they went, and/or adjusting fedora details, and missed the whole deal.

For this being the national wildlife visitor center, I really wasn't impressed. The center itself is a decent-sized building. The exhibitions did indeed give an overview of wildlife throughout the nation. Fun interactive displays for kids, not a ton of depth. They had a conference center attached, which I imagine is a very nice venue.

However, the grounds didn't do much for me. They're centered around two lakes, and there are no natural lakes in Maryland. In parts, there were concrete edges, and even a spout of water in the middle of one of them. Not very natural. The trails around the lakes weren't great; there was a floating boardwalk that was closed due to being "unsafe" and a bird blind with a nasty-looking wasp nest inside. The bugs were unpleasant, but I didn't see much in the way of larger wildlife. The views from the trails I tried weren't special.

Offshoots of the trail were closed for research purposes (fine), but there were also areas for hunting and fishing. Really? Is that the message we want to be sending at the national wildlife visitor center? That killing the wildlife for recreational purposes is a good idea? I know that many parks allow these things, but they shouldn't, and it's particularly inappropriate at this one, which is a wildlife sanctuary, research area, and educational venue. Find some other way to deal with overpopulated deer.

There might be some positives here, and I suspect the tram ride that I didn't do is nice, and it's a free educational place to take groups of children (though I would steer kids clear of any kind of hunting activity). But as a venue for wildlife observation and hiking, it isn't really worthwhile to drive this far. If you're in DC, Rock Creek Park is better in all respects. If you're elsewhere in the area, there are some much nicer places that are on the Bay and its tributaries, not on a fake lake.

We chatted with an employee at the restaurant, who says the walkout occurred after back-to-back incidents with rude customers: one party refused to pay their bill after deeming the food "too spicy," while another cursed at the owner.

That how's life one about the nature center is reminding me very much of the early-thread one described by amateurist as "i think it's hilarious that despite every evidence that she is at a chinese restaurant, the reviewer persists in believing she is at a japanese restaurant and rates accordingly."

Checked it - eephus was the original block-quoter there.

i know it's only a year and a half old but i just have to repost this one from roxy which i was just alluding to, since it took me so long to find it

Wow, way to make me feel awkward....

I walked in shortly after five on a Monday afternoon, hoping to get a quiet drink or two, maybe an appetizer, and get a feel for this place. I was there less than two minutes, but a feeling I certainly got...!

I was there long enough to see the interior layout. It's very "urban chic", with black and white photos, plenty of wood, ceramic, and stainless, and an attractive open kitchen.

Still, the single adjective that stands out most to me is "cramped". I opened the door and nearly walked into a couple conversing with the hostess (?), and the whole place looked like it should hold about 10% fewer people than they had seats for. Really, it's East Nashville, guys, not Manhattan. Anyhow, another employee said a quick "hello" to me, then asked my name. Being slightly disoriented, I told her my last name, but I couldn't imagine what good it would do her. She asked if I had a reservation, and I said no, still confused why a reservation might be necessary for a single person arriving at 5:10pm on a Monday afternoon.

Anyhow, I told her I'd never been in and asked about the seats ringing the kitchen. She told me they were reservation only, but pointed me to the bar, where, she said, seating was open. Alright, well, so far, pretty normal. . . .

The bar though had eleven seats in a tight squeeze that looks like it would be very cozy holding nine. There was one seat clearly holding a patron's purse, and another where it looked like someone had recently departed. I hopefully moved toward the bar, but found it incredibly difficult to navigate the small channels between the tables/bar/stools (I'm really not a big person!), and saw I was getting no help or attention from any of the patrons, the bartender, or the (hostess? manager?) who had originally spoken to me. Still, I probed at the area, hoping to get some indication that I would be able to use one of the two ostensibly open seats. After a moment or two of negative response, I turned (carefully!) for the door.

What I find most odd is that the same woman who had spoken to me upon entering (and assumed I had a reservation), said "ok, see you later" in a mildly condescending tone, with what I took to be an attitude that I should have known better than to dare come in at 5pm on a Monday with no reservation - The Horror!

It wouldn't have taken much to do a number of things that would have given me a MUCH better, so soooo essential, first impression: she could have apologized that I didn't see a place I liked; maybe asked me kindly to return some other time; she COULD have helped me to access one of the two clearly open seats; hell, she could have at the very least *SMILED* when she dismissed me out the door!

Eh, it all gave me a very sour feeling, and it's going to make it harder for me to start with a fresh slate ever I finally dine here, but I'll do my best.

Please, Lockeland Table, pleasepleasePUHleeeeeezze don't be like Pharmacy...we don't need another place to make fun of in this neighborhood.

I didn't get to try the coffee or any other products. Had, I, I may give 1-2 more stars. That being said, I did go in as they were closing and was received by really rude staff members.

I was supposed to meet a coffee date there and wasn't wise enough to check the hours. The door was open, I walked in, and they said "sorry, were about to close." I said, oh ok, well then I guess we'll find a different place, do you mind if I use the washroom." After this, things we're quite perturbing. The barista was hesitant and said I would have to buy something, but he'd ask the manager. He asked the manager and she said "nope, youd have to buy something." I told that that I fully intended to buy something, I went their with a purpose, that being said, they're basically closed, couldnt I just use the washroom for a second. She replied curtly "no." I found this rude and bothersome.

I walked out thinking "wow, so like do they just have a really old vulnerable bathroom and they know after like three more flushes that gaskets or whatever is gonna blow and they'll have to call an emergency plumber?"

I didn't realize it at the time, but the place isn't really a good place to sit and chat, but that's not their thing and I learned when I walked in.

So the coffee may be great, and maybe the other staff is great. But the two people I encountered, especially the manager, provided possibly the poorest customer service I have ever encountered.

4 1/2 stars, seriously?!? I stopped in last night to get a taste of what folks were talking about...I was very disappointed. Ok, first off I ask specifically for a Coors light in a bottle when I ask for a small Asahi and they tell me bottled beers only come in one size. I assumed they meant large so I figure a 12 oz bottle will suffice, I'm driving. The girl shows up with a glass of beer. I don't like glasses in restaurants I don't know (trust), so I never see the bottle and don't really know where my beer comes from, give people what they ask for! Then I order the yellowtail (Hamachi) and fatty tuna (Toro) sashimi. I get what looks like pretty nice yellowtail and what is basically lighter red tuna; Huh? Let's get somethong straigh, lighter colored tuna does not Toro make. This told me everything I needed to know, I regret not asking for the check at that point. No disrespect to the good people of the greater Annapolis area, but if you don't press the obvious Korean owners of this Japanese style eatery, they'll apparently serve you anything and charge for what they say it is, not matter what you're getting. Toro ain't cheap, but I love that marbled butter more than anything in a sushi joint, don't lie to me! Truth be told, it actually wasn't bad tuna and the yellowtail was not bad, but that loving feeling I was hoping for was growing cold most riky-tik. I figure the fish quality isn't bad so I order a Rainbow Roll (Cut style roll), hold the shrimp; chef says "no problem", ok! The roll comes, looks kind of small but yellowtail, salmon and avocado look bright and fresh, so I'm good. Then, I do the bullshit check and sure enough, in the crab capitol of the world there's imitation crab in the middle of my roll! Imitation crab, is not crab, it's the leftover crap that's soft when they fillet off a fish, it's the crap that falls on the floor, the waste! They cook it down, compress the hell out of it in the process and then add red food dye on the outside so when they slice it up it has a crab appearance, hence, imitation crab or as I like to call It: BULLSHIT! I know most places do it and most people don't care, I guess I'm not most people because proper and quality ingredients are what makes sushi expensive, and what I expect. I'll gladly pay, just don't lie to me. I go to Koi in Seal Beach Ca, almost exclusively, we've been going there since 1994. The head chef has educated me over the years. That's another thing, who are the no personality "helpers" behind tbe sushi bar?!? No attempt at rapport, just staring at me and asking, "It's good?", really?!? They never moved from their spots; move dude, either engage me, find out what I might like so I 1) have a better social dining experience and 2) if done right, I'll gladly give you more of my money! Amateur hour, no thank you Nova, you're a No-Go ...if in a pinch, I guess, but there has to be a true Japanese sushi house around Annapolis that believes in a true Japanese sushi experience...where?!?

Cash only & corkage fee is $10 per bottle so don't bring Two Buck Chuck or some other plonk. It's not worth the corkage. A good Gewurztramier or a mellow, fruity Chardonnay having undergone malolactic fermentation is another good alternative.

I've dined at Urban Butcher about 10 times now and the food is fantastic. BUT, I went last night to dine alone. I requested the table that I normally use and was denied seating and told that the table was "reserved". There were plenty of vacant tables nearby. My suspicion is that the host didn't feel that I was the right look for the place or thought that as single diner I wouldn't be profitable. I was disappointed in this host but have nothing less than stellar service from Alex, Daniel, Taylor, and Gabbie.

I'm hoping this was a one-time occurrence. MANAGEMENT, I hope you're listening! If this happens again to me, I will not be a repeat customer. Silver Spring is not Manhatten -- so please dump the snobbery.

For our wedding we were very excited to call The Commons our home, however, a bad experience with The Beacon still sits in our memories. We were also very excited to invite our friends and family to join us there for a special getaway! The hotel is beautiful and we really enjoyed the atmosphere and we were proud to be able to offer the same for our guests. However, although everything about our wedding was so beautiful and amazing, our very last moments of the week spent at The Beacon still leave a bad taste in our memories. This is so sad that one experience can stick in our memories and this is why I feel compelled to actually write a review. After the night of our wedding our parents and close relatives all gathered at The Beacon for brunch. There were 12 of us total trickling in as we woke up and were excited to share one last time together as we all parted ways across the country (and world) and it would be awhile to see each other again. As my husband and I arrived the waitress greeted us very stressed saying "You must have a reservation! I can't handle people just coming in like this!". She continued to say short comments about how annoying this was and how it was all our fault. My in-laws feeling terrible about the stress this was causing her volunteered to sit apart from the group since it was "too difficult" for the waitress to move the 2 person table that sat right next to our table to allow them to sit. I was overwhelmed with the stress this was causing and the way it was making my guests feel and all the excitement of the night before quickly was forgotten as my guests and myself were trying to diffuse the situation. As my in-laws sat far away from us and my family sat in silence and shame that we were causing such a problem in the very not busy restaurant...I pulled the waitress aside. I told her how embarrassing this was that she was short with my guests, lecturing them, making them feel incredibly unwelcomed, and that they were being incredibly accommodating and she can just take her time and do the best she can. I have worked in the service industry for years, I know that feeling of being overwhelmed but we were the most chill group of 12 (which isn't that big and the restaurant was slow!). I asked her if she expected us to leave by all of her comments and if so, she should pull us aside and talk to me instead of announcing all the stress and snarky comments to my guests. I was so mortified. The manager came over after the waitress was able to calm down and just try her best. His first comments were to blame us and to ask for proof of a reservation! Again, mortified in front of my guests and shocked that this restaurant could not accommodate a chill group of 12 regardless of a reservation or not during a slow time. He did after me explaining how unprofessional this has all been and embarrassing offer my husband and I our meal free. The meals came out at completely random times (totally worth the waitress not scolding us though) and we continued to feel so awkward there. I just can't imagine doing that as a service industry to a group of people that were so happy to just have an nice chill breakfast together and after spending thousands of dollars at The Commons.
