Anyone playing around with different keyboards? I downloaded SwiftKey and Swype and the swipe mechanism is definitely faster for me than the traditional keypad. SwiftKey seemed better but I'm scared of their "we track all of your keystrokes" steez and so I'm using Swype for now. Only thing that sucks is it's worse if you're trying to enter a weird word, it always guesses (wrong) and then if you backspace it deletes the whole word so you have to start over.

Been playing around with my 6 since this afternoon. I have to say it is just the best *feeling* phone I have ever used, just feels great in my hand. Touch ID works very well and used it with the app store already. Camera seems good but haven't really taken it out for a spin -- the new os8 slowmo and time lapse features are fun but not of much use to me. Screen is gorgeous, just jumps off the phone at you, especially when you look at the edges. Great to read on compared to prior iphones, usable for ebooks, pdfs, etc. Not a whole lot of specific ios8 or iphone 6 features that specifically jump out at me as radical so far, but part of that is the way software updates have become the delivery mechanism for most of the new features.

Don’t understand why apple didn’t make iPhone 6 slightly thicker, with a bigger battery.

lag∞n, Saturday, 20 September 2014 01:22 (nine years ago) link

Bloop bleep yglesias, does not compute

my jaw left (Hurting 2), Saturday, 20 September 2014 01:35 (nine years ago) link

F that, I like how thin my new 6 is. Helps make up for the largeness. (Which I by turns really enjoy and am getting angry at so I guess I'll just get used to it.)

Spirit of Match Game '76 (silby), Saturday, 20 September 2014 03:55 (nine years ago) link

yeah the thinness is great. If anything, I say make it wafer thin with a smaller battery, does this guy's house/office/coffee bar not have outlets or are we to believe he's outside for long periods of time?

my jaw left (Hurting 2), Saturday, 20 September 2014 03:59 (nine years ago) link

So for those who have played around with iOS 8, does the music player still use that terrible menu where all an artist's songs are in one huge list grouped by album, instead of offering a submenu of album titles?

i love my phone being one millimeter thinner and the way it strikes fear into people and ruins their life cause it literally wont hold a charge for a full day of use

lag∞n, Saturday, 20 September 2014 04:46 (nine years ago) link

I charge my phone all day long at work

ILX preorders SPYRO for Playstation (Sufjan Grafton), Saturday, 20 September 2014 04:47 (nine years ago) link

fucked up world our premiere consumer electronics provider wont supply us with a phone that doesnt require a charging strategy to function

lag∞n, Saturday, 20 September 2014 04:50 (nine years ago) link

I was being kind of facetious about the battery. I've actually found that in my first half day of use the battery life is pretty good. I left work at 630 with the thing about 70 percent charged and have since listened to multiple albums and podcasts, made calls, used browsers, downloaded apps, and generally used it abou 5x more than I would in a typical 6 hour period and its down to about 50%. Hard for me to imagine a full charge won't last me a full typical day.

my jaw left (Hurting 2), Saturday, 20 September 2014 05:10 (nine years ago) link

sup from 6 😎😎😎😎😎😎

⌘-B (mh), Saturday, 20 September 2014 05:11 (nine years ago) link

Like Gruber or somebody said, a hair thicker and the camera lens would have been flush and it could have had a battery comparable to the enormous 6+. I'm sure battery life OK today, but give it a year of use. During which time maybe you forget to plug it in and are looking at 20% first thing in the morning.

A tiny bit thicker and people wouldn't be buying so many charger cases.

I love the "night mode" in ibooks (white text on black) but have no idea whether that's a new thing or not

i think it is

Have really been enjoying the 6 so far -- hard to say how much of that is just the big screen/whether I would get the exact same pleasure from a Galaxy or w/e. But it was very pleasant to read a book on it on the subway this morning.

According to Wall Street analyst Gene Munster and BI Tech Editors Jay Yarow and Dave Smith, the cost to Apple of 64 GB of memory vs. 16 GB of memory is small. Specifically, it's about $20. That means that, for every customer persuaded to spend an extra $100 to buy the 64GB iPhone 6 (or 6 Plus), Apple will make an extra $80 in profit.

fu

lag∞n, Monday, 22 September 2014 20:40 (nine years ago) link

feel like that was a mistake on their part the base model shdve come w 32gb, noobs are always gonna go for the cheapest one and in this case end up with a not nearly as functional phone for two years, 16gb doesnt pass the "just works" test imo what with photos and apps getting bigger n bigger

lag∞n, Monday, 22 September 2014 20:44 (nine years ago) link

They woulda made more if it was the old 16->32 progression, I bet

More interesting is how much they're saving by going with 16gb default

Feel like it's the most popular, if even half of the 10 million sold this weekend were 16gb units and supposing they save $10 per then that's 50 million in savings right there

, Monday, 22 September 2014 20:45 (nine years ago) link

Xp!

, Monday, 22 September 2014 20:45 (nine years ago) link

I have no music to speak of on my 5S and not that many photos, but it's damn near full just from apps and podcasts.

Kiarostami bag (milo z), Monday, 22 September 2014 20:46 (nine years ago) link

The real criminal charge against 16gb is that recording hd video fills that shit up real fast, plus pics etc
