Mr Veg has a long-standing addiction to their Meditteranean Hummus, which is pretty much the king of non-homemade hummus in our houses

I always feel guilty when I buy the smaller hummus tubs because I feel like they lack the value of the larger tub hummus flavors. but this sounds good, and I may have made up that bit about larger tub value.

Bitterer than Bitter (Sufjan Grafton), Tuesday, 16 September 2014 18:21 (nine years ago) link

the tomato and basil hummus is bascially marinara, however

Bitterer than Bitter (Sufjan Grafton), Tuesday, 16 September 2014 18:22 (nine years ago) link

The edamame dip is godlike. The bags of frozen boneless chicken breasts for $7 are a good deal and I use them a lot (there are also bags of thighs if you prefer).

I don't normally use TJ's own brand of diced tomatoes bc they have too many stems in them--I usu pay more for the Sclafani or San Marzano ones at a regular store (when I can find them).

The smoked trout is p good? And the price on a package of garlicky, salty Boursin cheese is about HALF what grocery stores charge, so I always get Boursin at TJ's.

be warned the garlic hummus will leave your breath reeking of garlic more than almost any other garlic food i can recall

╲╱\/╲/\╱╲╱\/\ (gr8080), Tuesday, 16 September 2014 18:41 (nine years ago) link

Also their beef jerky is my favorite outside of getting locally made stuff from some small northern town.

Orson Wellies (in orbit), Tuesday, 16 September 2014 18:43 (nine years ago) link

yeah the jerky is good
perfect for road trippin
i like the edamame rice crackers too -- they're super salty

the pizza dough is *fine*; it's inexpensive and versatile which keeps me coming back but it just has ZERO flavor, and I am somewhat of a pizza diva so I need nice things.

Fuck I remember having a strong opinion abt the alfredo sauce but don't remember if it was good or bad

Gay Fire Beautiful Dong (Stevie D(eux)), Tuesday, 16 September 2014 20:11 (nine years ago) link

Iirc the Alfredo sauce is decent

just1n3, Tuesday, 16 September 2014 21:24 (nine years ago) link

chi poptions

difficult-difficult lemon-difficult (VegemiteGrrl), Tuesday, 16 September 2014 22:04 (nine years ago) link

I still rep for the spinach and kale bites. I tried making them from scratch and ended up making about the same amount and spending about the same on ingredients and they tasted about the same, so laziness won out, and I still buy the TJ's frozen ones.

I like using the TJ's chili as a base and adding extras.

Their smoked salmon is a good value, and I also like the lemon tart and the parmesan rolls

I can't get with any of their tortilla chips.

sarahell, Tuesday, 16 September 2014 22:05 (nine years ago) link

I bought the 'stone ground yellow corn tortilla chips' this week instead of the 'organic yellow corn rounds', and I am very pleased with this substitution.

Bitterer than Bitter (Sufjan Grafton), Tuesday, 16 September 2014 22:07 (nine years ago) link

I think they enjoy how mediocre they are, i.e. a good dip chip imo

Bitterer than Bitter (Sufjan Grafton), Tuesday, 16 September 2014 22:11 (nine years ago) link

you guys are making me want to go to tj's after work today. think i need some of that chili.

mattresslessness, Tuesday, 16 September 2014 22:11 (nine years ago) link

xp Perhaps, but I am not a fan of salted or chipotle-spiced cardboard even if dipped in the most delicious salsa or hummus

sarahell, Tuesday, 16 September 2014 22:13 (nine years ago) link

"spicy chicken sausage" with some sort of korean seasoning - revolting, easily the worst sausage i have eaten (rather, tried to eat) in years

i thought it was fine, but it made my bf violently ill. :-(

Okay guys I have some SUPER solid TJs updates.

I made the cornbread (w/o a doubt the most delicious cornbread of my life, box or otherwise) as well as this recipe for kale & crispy pork belly and LET ME TELL YOU this is a thing to behold

www.traderjoes.com/recipes/recipe.asp?rid=269

just use LS Better than Boullion bcz it's tastier and cheaper but I mean this whole meal musta cost me like $6 or $8 and it's 3 meals really

Gay Fire Beautiful Dong (Stevie D(eux)), Wednesday, 17 September 2014 02:39 (nine years ago) link

woah. definitely doing this.

Bitterer than Bitter (Sufjan Grafton), Wednesday, 17 September 2014 02:46 (nine years ago) link

have you ever eaten cornbread from a Kenny Rogers' Roasters?

Bitterer than Bitter (Sufjan Grafton), Wednesday, 17 September 2014 02:47 (nine years ago) link

oh shit stevie that sounds awesome

difficult-difficult lemon-difficult (VegemiteGrrl), Wednesday, 17 September 2014 03:13 (nine years ago) link

big fan of the frozen turkey bolognese sauce, but a caveat for the fennel haters that it does taste somewhat fennel-ish.

syro gyra (get bent), Tuesday, 23 September 2014 00:49 (nine years ago) link

anyway it's a good thing to eat standalone as a meal if you're watching your carbs.

syro gyra (get bent), Tuesday, 23 September 2014 00:50 (nine years ago) link

is it Trader Joe's corporate policy for all their stores to rearrange their shelves/products every 6 months or so, or is that just the one I shop at? They've been doing it for years, you can't tell me they haven't found the optimum shelf arrangement yet.

Οὖτις, Tuesday, 30 September 2014 19:39 (nine years ago) link

My guess is that TJ's has an inventory that invites impulse buys of items you didn't intend to get when you came in the door. If they force you to hunt for your usual items, you'll be exposed to more temptation to toss something new into your basket. My local TJ's doesn't rearrange nearly that often, though.

Aimless, Tuesday, 30 September 2014 19:45 (nine years ago) link

yeah that's what I thought too it's just weird, literally no other grocery store I go to does this. And I literally by the same exact two-dozen things every time I go there so it's just irritating that every few months I have to re-learn where everything is.

Οὖτις, Tuesday, 30 September 2014 19:48 (nine years ago) link

by = buy

Οὖτις, Tuesday, 30 September 2014 19:48 (nine years ago) link

every time you walk out of TJ's without a toblerone, you have won

GhostTunes on my Pono (Sufjan Grafton), Tuesday, 30 September 2014 19:59 (nine years ago) link

or have you?

GhostTunes on my Pono (Sufjan Grafton), Tuesday, 30 September 2014 19:59 (nine years ago) link

three weeks pass...

the almond/coconut/whitechocolate/dark chocolate balls are amazing

just1n3, Tuesday, 21 October 2014 06:28 (nine years ago) link

two weeks pass...

MEDIOCRITY ALERT: the Smashing Smores (small tub of chocolate-covered graham and marshmallow squares) are just fine but not all that flaborful or decadent and certainly not worth almost $5 when you can get the dark chocolate sea salt turbinado almonds instead.

Belami Young (Stevie D(eux)), Wednesday, 5 November 2014 04:38 (nine years ago) link

yeah I like that fox tea

I also really liked the dried mandarin oranges. good chewy texture and concentrated citrus.

los blue jeans, Tuesday, 11 November 2014 06:29 (nine years ago) link

I made the mistake of buying gluten-free candy cane joe-joe's. They are almost inedible.

Modern French Music from Failure to Boulez (askance johnson), Tuesday, 11 November 2014 14:14 (nine years ago) link

Their GF brownie mix is good though! I add some powdered Bourbon vanilla, and then as a topping I melt a few Tb of peanut butter w some butter in the microwave and then pour it over the top and bake per instructions.

Orson Wellies (in orbit), Tuesday, 11 November 2014 14:22 (nine years ago) link

Kept reading that as a few lb of peanut butter and was concerned
